Archaeological research conducted in Morocco over the last two decades has revealed a wealth of diachronic Maritime Cultural Heritage (MCH) resources, under water and in the coastal zone. However, observation and study has revealed that natural and anthropogenic threats are impacting these resources. Given the challenges to managing MCH resources in a country with such an extensive coastline and limited human managerial resources, the national heritage agency and external research institutions have developed methodologies that in part aim at mitigating these threats. This development is illustrated through three projects,  briefly outlined here: the Oued Loukkos Survey, the CBDAMM Project, and the MarEA Project. These projects incorporate approaches that have been tailored to the Moroccan context, considering the type of resources, the extent of the coastline, types of threats, legislation, and people and institutions involved. In conclusion, this article stresses that an interdisciplinary methodological approach to documentation is necessary in order to inform successful mitigation strategies and to plan for future interventions of MCH.

The Loukkos is among the largest river in Morocco. To date, there has been no thorough investigation of the underwater bedforms in the Loukkos. To characterize variability in bedform geometry, and to provide a detailed description of the morphodynamics of dunes in the river channel, images of the sediment-water interface were collected using an Ocean Server Iver2-62 AUV and an Echosounder 320 BP. Grab samples were taken for understanding sedimentological distribution. Series of bedforms of different sizes are clearly observed in the study area. They are presented as fields developed at depths of 2–10 m. Medium dunes in terms of Ashley's (1990) classification system, are the most dominant. The wavelengths and the heights vary from 1.5 to 52.5 m and 0.3–3.23 m respectively. Overall, the dunes identified along the Oued Loukkos have an asymmetrical cross-section with variable bedforms configuration from 2 D straight crest dunes to sinuous 3D dunes. In addition, the dunes show no clear correlation between dune height and wavelength with depth with previous studies, but this suggest that other parameters should be involved.

The coastline of Morocco extends across the northwest Maghreb region of Africa, from the western Mediterranean to the eastern Atlantic. Cultural heritage resources include archaeological remains that reveal a myriad of past human activities in the country’s coastal zone, from Middle Paleolithic habitation sites to historical large-scale port infrastructure. As also experienced globally, natural and anthropogenic factors are affecting the stability and morphology of Morocco’s coastal zone and impacting the archaeological sites therein. Recently, Morocco ratified the UN Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) Protocol and enacted a national ICZM law that include frameworks for management plans to include cultural heritage resources. One of the main challenges to developing ICZM plans in Morocco, however, is a gap in knowledge: there has been no baseline assessment of how all the factors at play impact cultural heritage assets. By focusing on northern Morocco as a case study, I identify six factors that specifically affect the coastline with examples of documented and potential impacts on archaeological sites. This is intended as a preliminary assessment that also aims to contribute to the development and content of potential management plans with recommendations for next steps.

The Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021-2030 is a UN initiative that promotes a common framework for supporting stakeholders in studying and assessing the health of the world's oceans. The initiative also presents a vital opportunity to improve the integration of archaeology within the marine sciences. With the First Global Planning Meeting of the Decade held in Copenhagen at the National Museum of Denmark in May 2019, steps are already being taken to make the best of this opportunity, and the resulting creation of an Ocean Decade Heritage Network is proposed as a way forward to continue to raise awareness in the cultural heritage community about the Decade and to facilitate information sharing regarding this endeavour.

Siraf is well‐known archaeologically and historically as an ancient port in the Persian Gulf that prospered during the medieval period. Siraf played a leading role in facilitating maritime and terrestrial trade, connecting long‐distance Indian Ocean and China routes with those in the Gulf region. Despite its history, no previous research has been dedicated to the maritime infrastructure of Siraf. Through the ‘2012 Siraf pilot project’ a preliminary survey of the underwater and shoreline remains of this ancient port city was conducted. The site's location is unique in many respects to trade routes and logistical considerations; however, its maritime infrastructure is difficult to assess in light of the extensive threats to the site.

This volume challenges the orthodox view that fishing and fish played only a marginal role in the economy of the ancient world. In fact, there is archaeological evidence for ancient fish processing on a commercial scale not only in the Mediterranean itself, but also on the Atlantic coast and in the Black Sea region, especially the Crimea. Our literary sources testify to the widespread culinary and medicinal use of salted fish and fermented fish sauces in antiquity, and especially in the first centuries AD.
