According to Iranian Traditional Medicine, exercise is very important to health preservation and it has been explained a lot of profits for it and according to some philosophers' such as aviccena idea, to health preservation, it is prior to another things even nutrition. Getting the most profits from exercise, proportional sports to every body have been suggested. Actually, sports have been located in different groups and each group, includes specific effects on body. This studi,s aim is recognition of different groups of exercise and their effects on human body, in the shape of sport classification in Iranian Traditional Medicin, inorder to recommendation of appropriate and proportional activity to persons. Using the qualitative study approach of content analysis type, subjects that had been extracted from samples about Sport classification, which had been chosen based on the purposive method from Iranian Traditional Medicine books, were analysied.

In the modern medical era it has been known as well that physical activity and exercise are important factors to prevent from different chronic diseases. Scientifically, there are numerous evidence based studies about protective role of exercise against chronic diseases such as cardio- respiratory diseases, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia etc, which have been completely explained. Historically, ancient physicians such as Avicenna had described this topic several hundred years ago. However, ancient principles of medicine are too different in comparison with modern medicine and description of diseases which Avicenna has talked about them and their managements are too much different, yet reviewing the protective role of sports and physical activity in his masterpiece, "The Canon of Medicine", reveals that Avicenna has made a significant contribution to the evolution of following knowledge. The present review discusses Avicenna's opinion about protective role of exercise agai...

A 24 year old otherwise healthy male presented with a chief complaint of giving way in the left knee. MRI reported complete anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tearing. Arthroscopy showed ACL agenesis, ring-shaped lateral meniscus, and an anomalous thick band extending from the anterior horn of the lateral meniscus to the intercondylar notch of the lateral femoral condyle, which is known as the anterolateral meniscofemoral ligament (MFL). The MFL was attached to the anatomic site of anteromedial bundle of ACL. ACL reconstruction surgery was performed using central 1/3 bone tendon bone graft. Practitioners should be aware that ACL reconstruction in lateral meniscofemoral ligament with associated ACL agenesis is a treatment option in which the preservation of MFL, as the stabilizer of anterior horn of lateral meniscus, should be considered during ACL reconstruction.

Background: To review a single-surgeon series of 616 athletic patients with anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions in order to evaluate the relationship between the timing of the reconstruction and the incidence of meniscal and chondral injuries. Methods: Six group of patients were categorized based on the time interval from their injury to surgery in the following manner: <3 months, 3-6 months, 6-9 months, 9-18 months, 18-36 months, and >36 months. The presence of meniscal tears was documented and chondral pathology was scored based on the Outerbridge classification. Results: Incidence of medial meniscus tear was significantly higher in patients undergoing reconstruction after 3 months from their injury (P = 0.032). The opportunity of patients with chondral pathology was recorded to be significantly higher in the groups operated on after 6 months from their injuries time (P = 0.008). Conclusions: Considering the effect of time on the rate of having meniscus injury and cho...

Background: Recent studies have shown evidence of a relationship between overweight and obesity with skeletal abnormalities, especially angular knee disorders. We aimed to reveal causal relationship between obesity and skeletal abnormalities. Methods: This study was performed on 280 overweight or obese patients (with BMI > 25kg/m2) who referred to the hospital with which the authors are affiliated in Tehran between 2017 and 2018. Several non-radiographic methods including measuring Q angle, inter-malleoli distance and distance between two knees were used to determine genu varum and genu valgum. BMI was also calculated by dividing the weight by the square of the height. Results: The prevalence of genu varumand genu valgum was 8.6% and 10.0%, respectively. There was a significant adverse correlation between the Q angle and BMI. The mean BMI in patients with and without genu varum was 39.07 ± 6.41 kg/m2 and 42.1 ± 2.26 kg/m2, respectively, being significantly lower in the genuvarum ...

In the modern medical era sudden cardiac death and its causes among athletes have been described. Finding appropriate preventive ways from this tragic event is so important in sports medicine. According to different trials and observations, there are numerous reasons and some preventive strategies. Historically, sudden cardiac death among athletes had been described several hundred years ago by ancient physicians. The first physician who described this topic completely and recommended some preventive ways is Ibn Abi Sadiq al-Neishaburi. In this article, his opinion has been discussed.

Background Studies evaluating the role of both corticosteroids and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the treatment of rotator cuff (RC) tendinopathies have been contradicting. We compared structural and clinical changes in RC muscles after corticosteroids and PRP injections. Methods This is a randomized double-blind clinical trial. All individuals with diagnosis of RC tendinitis during 2014–2017 were considered. Individuals were randomly allocated to either receive PRP or corticosteroids. Overall, 3cc of PRP was injected within the subacromial joint and another 3cc was injected at the site of the tendon tear, under the guide of sonography. For the corticosteroid group, 1cc of Depo-medrol 40mg and 1cc of lidocaine (2%) was injected within the subacromial joint. Results Overall, 58 patients entered the study. Comparison of pain, range of motion (ROM), Western Ontario RC (WORC), Disability of Arm-Hand-Shoulder (DASH) scores, and supraspinatus thickness showed significant improvement during...

Background: The burden of obesity and diet-related chronic diseases is increasing in Iran, and prevention and treatment strategies are needed to address this problem. The aim of this study was to determine the outcome, cost, safety and cost-consequence of non-invasive weight loss interventions in Iran. Methods: We performed a systematic review to compare non-invasive interventions (cryolipolysis and radiofrequency/ ultrasonic cavitation) with semi-invasive (lipolysis) and invasive (liposuction). A sensitive electronic searching was done to find available interventional studies. Reduction of abdomen circumference (cm), reduction in fat layer thickness (%) and weight reduction (kg) were outcomes of efficacy. Meta-analysis with random models was used for pooling efficacy estimates among studies with the same follow-up duration. Average cost per intervention was estimated based on the capital, maintenance, staff, consumable and purchase costs. Results: Of 3,111 studies identified in our...

The mainstay of treatment for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear is considered to be surgery, especially when associated with medial collateral ligament (MCL) tears. We aimed to evaluate our hypothesis that some patients with concomitant ACL and MCL tears may develop spontaneous healing without surgical intervention. This study was conducted during 2013 to 2017. A total of 707 patient referred with combined ACL and MCL injuries. Patients were divided into three groups according to type of ACL and MCL management as follows: (1) group 1 as those who only had ACL reconstruction without any surgical treatment of MCL; (2) group 2 as those who had ACL reconstruction and MCL surgery (reconstruction, reefing, or both); (3) group 3 as those who showed spontaneous healing of ACL and MCL. Overall, 206 and 129 patients entered groups 1 and 2, respectively. Overall, 15 patients showed spontaneous healing of ACL and entered group 3. Skiing and soccer were the most common causes of injury withi...

Exercise is an integral part of diabetes care. In Iranian women with type II diabetes, we compared the effects of supervised group exercise therapy with the effects of home-based exercise therapy on health-related quality of life (HRQOL), anthropometric parameters, glycaemic control and lipid profile. One hundred and two diabetic women were randomised to supervised and home-based groups. Over 12 weeks, participants received supervised group-exercise therapy or a home-based exercise-therapy program. During the intervention, they were assessed three times: at baseline, and at weeks 6 and 12. Generalized Estimating Equation models were used to examine the associations between the type of exercise-therapy program and changes over time in anthropometric and biochemical outcomes, and in HRQOL scales of SF36 questionnaire. Relative to home-based group, supervised group improved significantly regarding role-physical, general health, mean body weight and body mass index from baseline to week 12 (p=0.01). Their reduction in mean body-fat mass from baseline to week 6 (p=0.04) was greater. Similarly, their role-physical, general health and role-emotional improved significantly during the intervention (p<0.05). From baseline to the twelfth week, the HbA1c level fell significantly (p<0.05) in both groups. Supervised group-exercise therapy was more effective than home-based exercise therapy in improving HRQOL and body composition in diabetic women. However, home-based exercise therapy also produced significant improvements in glycaemic control, body composition and lipid profile. Whether in a supervised or home-based setting, the exercise intervention can therefore be effective in improving health outcomes in diabetic patients.

The study's purpose was to evaluate clinical manifestations of the female athlete triad among some elite Iranian athletes. This cross-sectional study was conducted in three phases: 1) screening for menstrual irregularity (oligomenorrhea/amenorrhea) and/or stress fracture and weight-reducing drugs, 2) measurement of bone mineral density by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, and 3) a clinical interview to diagnose eating disorders. Phases 2 and 3 were conducted in athletes who reported menstrual irregularity and/or stress fracture and weight-reducing drugs. We evaluated a total of 786 athletes (94%) with a mean age of 21.1 ± 4.5 yr old. Seventy-two (9.2%) athletes reported menstrual irregularity, 11 (1.4%) of whom had polycystic ovary syndrome. Only three athletes (0.4%) had all three common clinical manifestations of the Triad (eating disorders, menstrual irregularity, and low bone mineral density). There was no association between these disorders and body mass index or type of sport. A total of 17 (2%) reported stress fracture, 14 of whom also reported a history of stress fracture without any menstrual irregularity. The athletes who competed in high-risk sports (endurance sports, weight class sports, and sports requiring a lean build) had significantly more stress fractures than those participating in other types (odds ratio = 3.35, 95% confidence interval = 1.22-9.15). Although the prevalences of clinical functional hypothalamic menstrual disorders and stress fracture were less than those reported in some other countries, athletes in the high-risk group had significantly more stress fractures than those in the low-risk group. Future studies should focus on screening, diagnosing, preventing, and treating all components of the newly defined Triad, especially in high-risk sports in Iran.
