Analysis of the drawings on a 5th century AD papyrus containing a list of multiplications. On the recto, an eagle with XI monogram emblematises the Christian notion of resurrection and ascent of the soul. On the verso, what was earlier considered just an ornament is in fact a geographical map of an Eastern Desert wadi and is fashioned following patterns of older Egyptian cartography.

Since 2008 the excavation work of the Tell Basta Project/German-Egyptian Joint Mission focuses not only on the area inside the Great Temple of Bastet but also on its periphery. Thus it has become possible to question the common state of research, according to which the history of the town and temple of Bubastos during the Roman period is intransparent, if the site was not even abandoned. After surveying different kinds of sources, the article tries to indicate that the Great Temple was not deserted but in fact still used as a sanctuary or at least as a public building.
