    Objective. The aim of the present study was to determine the efficacy of Chloroquine (Cq), an antimalarial medicine, administered at a dose of 2.5 mg/kg, orally, during 5 consecutive days, in Sakiz and Merino lambs naturally infected with Giardia duodenalis. Materials and methods. To this extent weaned 10 weeks of aged lambs were enrolled and randomly assigned into two groups based on treatment (group C, n=18 lambs treated with Cq) and placebo (group P, n=8 untreated control animals). Diagnosis was based on detection of trophozoit and/or cysts on fecal flotation. Cyst count per gram feces (days 0, 3, 7 and 10) was analyzed among groups. Results. During the trial, regarding the efficacy of Cq on days 3., 7., and 10. There was significant (p<0.01) reduction in cyst excretion; whereas evaluation of mean geometric cyst excretion revealed 100% reduction. Conclusions. There was a very high (100%) reduction in cyst excretion in the Cq treatment group compared to the positive untreated control group on days 3, 7 and 10, resulting in a significant (p<0.001) reduction, making Cq, safety, and thus highly effective treatment option of lambs with naturally occuring giardiasis.

    ABSTRACT Background: Ehrlichiosis in dogs is a vector borne disease caused by Ehrlichia canis, from the Anaplasmataceae family, capable of causing multisystemic disorders. Following an incubation period of 8-20 days, acute, subclinical and chronic forms of the disease may develop and affected dogs frequently showed hemorrhage, lymphadenopahty, splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, along with cardiac/renal disorders and myelosupression. Most of the untreated dogs spontaneously recover form the acute phase and enters the subclinical phase, in which some of them may develop chronic phase characterized by bone marrow aplasia. Ehrlichial organisms are commonly susceptible to tetracycline derivatives, and doxycycline is probably most commonly used for treatment of the infection. Doxycycline may be quite effective for clearing parasitemia in acute E. canis infection.     Abstract: Small (1-3 μm in diameter, ring, oval or comma shaped) piroplasms 36 suggestive of Babesia spp. were observed upon microscopic examination of Giemsa37 stained peripheral blood smears from a 3.5 year-old American Pit Bull Terrier with 38 clinical signs of pyrexia, weakness, mucous membrane pallor and depression living in 39 Aydin, Turkey in February 2009. To confirm the presence and to identify the species of 40 Babesia spp., PCR technique was performed using primers amplifying a 670 bp 41 fragment of the 18S rRNA gene of Babesia gibsoni and the PCR products were 42 analyzed by sequencing. The nucleotide sequence was compared to the sequences 43 available in GenBank using nucleotide BLAST program. The results indicated a 99% 44 similarity with sequences of Babesia gibsoni.     The efficacies of 5 widely used dietary supplements were investigated on performance indices, fecal oocyst excretion, lesion score, and intestinal tract measurements in healthy and Eimeria spp.-infected birds by using a comparative model. This study included 2,400 sexed Ross 308 broiler chicks that were equally divided in 2 groups: the infected group, experimentally infected with oocysts of mixed Eimeria spp. at 14 d of age, and the healthy controls. The birds in both groups were further divided equally into 6 groups, of which one was fed a basal diet and served as control without treatment and the other 5 served as experimental treatments.     Vector-borne diseases are rising in interest due to global warming, which is believed to impact on the distribution of vectors into new areas thus influencing the occurrence and epidemiology of vector-borne pathogens. Babesia canis belongs to the Piroplasmidae and there are three described subspecies, namely B. canis canis, B. canis rossi and B. canis vogeli. They are each transmitted by a different tick-species, Dermacentor reticulatus, Haemaphysalis leachi and Rhipicephalus sanguineus, respectively. There are also differences in the geographical distribution and pathogenicity to dogs of each subspecies. In this study, we aimed to establish a rapid and easy to perform DNA-based test using loop-mediated isothermal amplification to detect all three Babesia canis subspecies in one assay.

    The present study was carried out to find out the prevalence of tropical theileriosis in the Aydin region and to determine immune status of cattle vaccinated with Theileria annulata schizont vaccine using the indirect fluorescence antibody test (IFAT) during and after the disease season. A total of 236 out of 466 cattle found to be seronegative with IFAT were vaccinated in the Aydin region (Cine, Incirliova, Nazilli, and Centrum) before the disease season (March). The remaining cattle (230/466) served as controls. Blood samples were collected from all cattle following the vaccination once in each month of April, June, September, and December (a total of 4 times) to determine the incidence of the disease using microscopic and serologic evaluations. Results indicated that the incidence of the disease varied among the regions. Clinical theileriosis was found in a total of 22 cattle (10 vaccinated, 12 unvaccinated) during the disease season.

    A male Rottweiler dog was brought to the Adnan Menderes University Faculty of Veterinary Clinics with the complaint of injury. On examination, on the right rear side of the dog, Myiasis larvae were found. Twenty-seven were collected and larval mouth parts and posterior stigmas were dissected. Upon microscopic examination, the larvae of the dog were identified as third stage Lucilia spp. In the region where larvea were located, erythema, edema, and petechial hemorrhages were observed as pathological disorders.

    In this study, it was aimed to determine the prevalence of E. granulosus in the Aydın district. Clean and fresh faeces samples were collected off the ground from owned dogs (n=100; 25 female, 75 male) with the range of 6-16 months old. These faeces samples were obtained in 13 villages from five different locations (Centre, Söke, Çine, Bozdoğan and Kuyucak) of the Aydın district. The prevalence of E. granulosus was investigated with PCR and prior to applications of molecular techniques, faeces samples were investigated with macroscopic and floatation methods E. granulosus was determined in only one dog (1%; 1/100) and Toxocara canis (11%), Ancylostoma caninum (%3), Taenia spp. (2%) and Capillaria spp. (1%) eggs were also identified. Current prevalence (1%) of E. granulosus in this study is lower than the other studies conducted in different parts of Turkey. Determination of E. granulosus with PCR in faeces without determining any parasites with either macroscopic or microscopic examinations could indicate the potential risk of dog faeces for animal owners, veterinarians and parasitology laboratory technicians.
