Providing opportunities for younger generations to voice out their views in the building of our common futures within the limits, opportunities, and dynamics of the biosphere is a central component in sustainability learning. To this aim, a novel methodological approach using participatory theater was implemented to explore future scenarios with young people in the Man and Biosphere Reserve of La Sepultura, Mexico. Three workshops were carried out as part of a broader environmental education process, aimed at enhancing critical awareness and ownership of participants' own futures. Through the reflective enactment of scenarios linked to personal actions and resources, alternative ways to think through the interconnections and the affective bonds between participants and their natural heritage were collectively represented and explored. Our process helped not only to identify different plausible futures and potential barriers to them, but also to realize positive roles that young people could play to overcome such barriers and engage with their desired futures.

Worldviews about the nature, purposes, and dynamics of Human Information and Knowledge Systems (HIKS) affect the nature, intended transformations and dynamics of global Social-Ecological Systems (SES) as well as our capacity to learn from and adapt to them. Modifying the core assumptions about HIKS –and the attendant practices related to these assumptions- is of paramount importance for the emergence of transformative pathways toward sustainability in research, education, and policy. In this paper, we identify and characterise two general ideal-type worldviews on HIKS and their relationships with SES within the contemporary Western science, education and policy domains. One worldview understands information and knowledge systems as abstract constructions which evolve in a closed, ahistorical, and social-ecologically disembodied space. Under this worldview, the integration of different forms of knowledge demands their reduction to a single form of representation. The other worldview ...

We present and analyze 10 case studies of participatory river-basin management that were conducted as part of the European HarmoniCOP project. The main theme was social learning, which emphasizes the importance of collaboration, organization, and learning. The case studies show that social learning in river-basin management is not an unrealistic ideal. Resistance to social learning was encountered, but many instances

This paper examines the responses of four different types of shielded conduits to a direct lightning strike. The conduits are buried in the ground and run between two shielded enclosures, one of which is struck by lightning. An induced current flows on the conduit and this induces a voltage on the inner wires within the shield. Using a simple resistive

The Arctic region is climatically one of the fastest changing regions worldwide, as exemplified by the decreasing extent and volume of Arctic sea ice. These changes are attributed mostly to cumulative effects of consumption and production patterns in industrialized countries beyond the Arctic’s southern borders - specifically the increasing emission of greenhouse gases and Short Lived Climate-warming Pollutants (SLCPs). Warming in the Arctic may feed back on mid-latitude weather and climate by impacting storm tracks, which in turn can induce a series of feedback loops between climatic and socio-ecological changes in Arctic and non-Arctic regions. The warming climate also enables a number of economic and societal transformations in the Arctic, driven by the extraction of oil and gas resources on Arctic continental shelves, Arctic shipping mostly along north-eastern routes, and the expansion of Arctic tourism. These changes affect regions beyond the Arctic, such as Europe, North Ameri...

The present paper introduces for the first time the concept of Integrated Climate Governance (ICG) and critically discusses its implications for EU research and policy on ‘sustainable development’. ICG is understood as a transition-oriented appraisal approach focused on the creation of assessment tools, policy instruments, and agent-based capacities aimed at dealing in an integrated way with multiple scales and domains

ABSTRACT This paper explores to what extent moving towards the 30% GHG emission reductions by 2020 with respect to 1990 in the EU can be considered a transformative target. To do so, we first define the concept of transformative targets from a complex systems perspective and show a novel approach and original results using an extended application of the GEM-E3 model. Traditional macroeconomic models cannot easily handle key synergetic system effects derived from green growth and sustainability policies, and thus require additional features. We analyse the role of semi-endogenous growth driven by learning-by-doing and low-carbon investment expectations following a long-term transformative trajectory.
