    Professor Roux is a pioneer in the field of interreligious, intercultural and human rights education. This article will focus on her contribution to understanding diversity in humankind and to enhancing inclusivity. An overview of her work demonstrates that she envisioned an understanding of diversity through education. She identified human rights values as common denominators within cultural and religious spaces of fear and resistance. She also focused on interreligious and intercultural dialogue in education as a means to enhance empathetic and caring interactions with others. In recent years, Roux has initiated three projects: The first was titled Understanding Human Rights through Different Belief Systems: Intercultural and Interreligious Dialogue (2005 - 2008).     In some African countries, for example, South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and Lesotho, the tradition of paying Lobola for a wife is common practice. According to this tradition, marriage is a contract between families and not just individuals, so the transfer of cattle from the relatives of the bridegroom to those of the bride serves to legitimize the marriage and to ensure certain rights. The most important of these rights is that the children of the marriage would legally belong to the father’s lineage group.

    Safeguarding the rights of women and girls is a special concern within the context of prevailing gender discrimination and violence in South African societies, often rooted in cultural or religious contexts. In a South Africa Netherlands research Programme on Alternatives in Development (SANPAD)-funded international research project (2010–2013), women teachers, mothers, and caregivers in selected schools were engaged in research which used an innovative approach which we defined as Communities in Conversation (CiC). In this article, we examine the potential of CiC to support women’s empowerment, and share our experiences of using CiC in two school communities. CiC involves women in conversations that focused on human rights and human rights education within the context of gender, culture, and religion. As such, it offered participating women opportunities for sharing and learning, and developing friendships and feelings of solidarity which are particularly important for empowerment processes.
