ABSTRACT In modern factories, production equipment maintenance represents a significant and important task to ensure that plant facilities continue to function properly. On the other hand, intelligent production dispatching generates maximal outputs for changing production demands. In this research, a system architecture, called Integrated Intelligent Equipment Maintenance and Production Dispatching (IEMPD) building on the JAVA Expert System Shell (JESS), is designed and developed to support collaborative maintenance, remote equipment diagnosis, job dispatching, and production simulation/verification. The IEMPD system is applied for dynamic shop floor equipment maintenance and production control. In the past, trouble shooting analyses were based on the experiences and skills of equipment engineers. The IEMPD platform allows knowledge engineers to construct, manage and maintain rules easily and flexibly to satisfy ever-changing collaborative maintenance and production requirements. Through the rule base, maintenance knowledge and experiences can be created, accumulated, shared and reused. Thus, IEMPD can rapidly help maintenance engineers identify the faults and suggest solutions. Further more, IEMPD can assist production engineers plan dispatched jobs based on the orders and the equipment status. This research uses a machining flexible manufacturing system (FMS) as the case study to demonstrate the IEMPD capability in supporting integrated intelligent maintenance and production.

This research focuses on the development of a rule-based intelligent equipment trouble-shooting and maintenance platform using JAVA Expert System Shell (JESS) technology. A prototype system is designed and developed combining rule-based knowledge system and inference engine to support real-time collaborative equipment maintenance across geographical boundary. The main modules of the system include diagnosis knowledge management, project (or case) management and system administration. This research studies the development and operations of advantageous industries' logistics hubs in Taiwan. Based on a comprehensive analysis of related data, we quantitatively and objectively identify Taiwan industries on a scale from low to high advantages. The advantage ranking, combined with economic production data and other global indicators, enables us to place the industries into categories. Based on the categories of advantageous industries, selective companies are targeted and surveyed to depict their current and improved operations of global logistics and distribution hubs. The systems underlying these logistics/distribution hubs are modelled using INCOME, an integrated system analysis tool designed to capture, describe, and analyze business processes with various views. Global enterprises require extended logistics operations that integrate channel intermediaries into the network. The method for deriving integrated models for logistics hubs that improve the efficiency of manufacturers’ global operations is the focus of this paper. Under government sponsorship, six industrial logistics hubs were implemented by leading manufacturing sectors across Taiwan over a five year period from 2004 until 2008.
