NOVEMBER 18, 2020 ~ OLGA ZILBERBOURG Most of us who grew up in the Soviet Union will remember Samuil Marshak's rhyming dramatic tale Koshkin dom-The Cat's House. A wealthy angora cat builds herself a new residence. Two destitute kittens show up at her doorstep, begging her to share her house with them: We're your nephews, they say. We're poor orphans. Won't you let us in and feed us? The wealthy angora cat has her servant shoo them away, setting off the action of the drama in which the angora cat eventually gets her punishment for refusing help to the kittens in need, and the orphan kittens prove to be in the position to give her shelter.

This article is a first-hand report of a participant and leader of a
number of underground initiatives within the “refuseniks’”
community which aimed to encourage Jewish studies. These
underground initiatives involved seminars (scholarly as well as
public), excursions through Jewish historical sites, and the
publication of a samizdat journal. In short, these initiatives sought
to recover and disseminate knowledge of Jewish history and culture.
This article is a first-hand report of a participant and leader of a
number of underground initiatives within the “refuseniks’”
community which aimed to encourage Jewish studies. These
underground initiatives involved seminars (scholarly as well as
public), excursions through Jewish historical sites, and the
publication of a samizdat journal. In short, these initiatives sought
to recover and disseminate knowledge of Jewish history and culture.

Я прочёл воспоминания Абы Таратута от начала и до конца. Они содержат первоклассный, подробный и захватывающий рассказ о еврейском движении в Ленинграде 1970-х - 1980-х годов. Воспоминания написаны одним из главных героев движения, человеком, который, занимал в нём центральное место и был широко признан как таковой в своем городе, в Москве, а также в Израиле и на Западе. Таким образом, перед нами наиболее авторитетное свидетельство о еврейской деятельности в важнейшем после Москвы центре движения советских евреев.
Более того, Таратута не только непосредственно участвовал в разнообразных формах еврейской активности, но и оказывал на них весомое влияние. Поэтому в его рассказе присутствуют все аспекты движения: изучение иврита, культурные и научные семинары, подготовка, хранение и распространение еврейского самиздата, контакты с Москвой, Израилем и Западом. Настоящая историческая монография посвящена судьбам евреев Петрограда-Ленинграда в революционном 1917 году, в годы военного коммунизма, в период нэпа, во время индустриализации массовых репрессий тридцатых годов. В первой части книги анализируется политика властей по отношению к евреям, роль евреев в жизни города, а также взаимоотношения с окружающим населением. Обсуждаются также демографические и социально-экономические изменения в еврейском населении, его аккультурация, урбанизация и интеграция в советское общество. Вторая часть посвящена еврейской религиозной и общинной жизни, деятельности национальных политических партий и общественных организаций, еврейскому образованию и культуре. Особое внимание уделено судьбе национально настроенной интеллигенции, благодаря усилиям которой еврейская жизнь в городе продержалась гораздо дольше, чем можно было ожидать. Книга удостоилась Анциферовской премии 2000 года.

The publishing of the ‘The American Brother: the “Joint” in Russia, the USSR and the CIS’ coincided with an exhibition by the same name that was held in October – November 2004 at the Moscow House of Photography and marked the 90th Anniversary of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), known the world over simply as the “Joint”. In a concise format, the book tells the entire history of the Joint’s involvement in helping Russian, Soviet and post-Soviet Jews, from World War I until present day. JDC relief to the victims of pogroms during the Russian Civil War, rescue from famine in the first years of Lenin’s New Economic Policy, caring for the orphans and the elderly, large-scale agricultural resettlement of the Jews in the 1920-1930s, food package program that ran for decades after the World War II and finally, welfare programs and community building of today - all are narrated visually and textually in the book. The book contains some 250 photographs and documents from dozens of archives and personal collections – primarily the archives of the JDC headquarters in New York and Jerusalem, the Archives of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, the Central Zionist Archives in Jerusalem, and various archives in Moscow and the Ukraine. For most of these photographs, this is a first publishing ever. In the album, the reader will not only find photographic illustrations to the history of the Joint’s caring and doing, but also the images of those who devoted themselves to the cause of helping, defying frequent hardship and danger to their lives, personal wellbeing and safety – JDC workers, its leaders and its donors.

OUR LEGACY by Michael Beizer deals with the fate of synagogue buildings on the territory of tsarist Russia, the Soviet Union, and the Commonwealth of Independent States for the period of a century. The first part covers the beginning of the 20th century until the break-up of the USSR. The second part relates how, in the post-Communist era, some of the synagogues confiscated by the Soviet state are being returned to Jewish communities and gaining a new life. The author leads the reader through the complex of problems connected with this process, stressing the role of the Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) in regaining and restoring synagogues. The book is lavishly illustrated with photographs, mostly from the collection of the JDC, and many are here published for the first time. The Appendix provides a list of synagogues functioning in the CIS today.

The Society for the Protection of the Health of the Jewish Population (OZE in Russian abbreviation) was founded on August 7, 1912 in St. Petersburg, Russian Imperial capital.
The members of the OZE Committee, who were inspired with the narodnichestvo ideals, advocated accessible and free medical care for all. However, the existing healthcare system in Russia was not readily accessible for shtetl Jews, while Jewish philanthropic medicine was insufficient, chaotic and haphazard.
Relying on the contemporary achievements of Jewish social studies in the West, and on their own experience, the OZE founders believed that Jews, due to their special lifestyle, and history of persecution, formed a unique psycho-physical profile, as well as a susceptibility to some diseases and immunity to others.
OZE strove to create a public network of its own, providing medical and sanitation services, as well as preventive medical care among the Jewish masses. This network was to became an important brick in the building of the Jewish national extra-territorial autonomy in Russia, promoted by Semyon Dubnov and his followers. It would compensate for the social and legal discrimination against Jews, address specific "Jewish" illnesses, and give proper consideration to religious and ethnic traditions. OZE's ultimate aim was nothing less than the physical and psychological revival of the Jewish People.
A new regulation issued in 1906, as one of the achievements of the 1905-07 revolution, made official registration of public organizations of non-Slavic minorities far easier. As St. Petersburg was the main center of science and medicine, and also the chief headquarters of the "organized Jewish public," it was only natural that the Society for Jewish Healthcare was destined to be established there.

A sample of a private correspondence presented in this publication reflects the difficult fate of the St. Petersburg pre-revolutionary Jewish public elite in the 1920s. These outstanding lawyers, medical doctors, economists, journalists and lay communal leaders turned into “splinters” of the formerly diverse and formidable capital’s Jewish life. The list of the authors of the letters includes such outstanding
figures, as Oscar Gruzenberg, Boris Brutskus, Solomon Posner, and others, while the addressees are Maxim Vinaver, Boris Bogen, and Olga Kameneva. The letters are located in the archives of New York, Cincinnati and Moscow.

The Society for the Protection of the Health of the Jewish Population (OZE) was founded in 1912 in St. Petersburg. OZE strove to create a public network of medical and sanitation services. This network was to become an important brick in the building of the Jewish national extra-territorial autonomy in Russia. OZE's ultimate aim was nothing less than the physical and psychological revival of the Jewish People.

Most underground Zionist activity of the 1960s in the USSR existed on a meager, internally generated budget. In the 1970s, the Soviet Jewish movement became linked to sources of foreign support, mainly JDC-Nativ, as well as other Jewish organizations fighting for the rights of Soviet Jewry.
Aid was provided in the form of postal packages, money transfers, presents brought by tourist-emissaries, as well as significant amounts from Soviet Jews who handed their savings to trust foundations and received reimbursements in foreign currency in Israel.
Material aid from abroad provided much needed relief, sometimes saved the lives of Prisoners of Zion, allowed refuseniks who were thrown out of work to lead a dignified life, and served as a stimulus for the more fearful. Financial support helped spread Jewish knowledge, and awaken the ethnic and religious identity of Soviet Jews. It was also a clear promise that should something go wrong, refuseniks and their families would not be left alone to suffer.

This article is a first-hand report of a participant and leader of a number of underground initiatives within the “refuseniks’” community which aimed to encourage Jewish studies. These underground initiatives involved seminars (scholarly as well as public), excursions through Jewish historical sites, and the publication of a samizdat journal. In short, these initiatives sought to recover and disseminate knowledge of Jewish history and culture.

Results of olfactory function tests (threshold determination and odor identification) in three cases of bilateral and one case of unilateral choanal atresia are reported. All four patients underwent successful repair of choanal atresia at relatively advanced ages (8 to 31 years). Test results showed that patients who had suffered from bilateral atresia had permanent olfactory deficits, while the patient who had suffered from unilateral atresia appeared to have normal olfactory acuity. Although these results should be interpreted with caution due to the small number of cases examined, they suggest the possibility that early sensory exposure might be needed for the normal development of central olfactory functions in analogy to the visual system.
