Cristina Soriano’s Tides of Revolution: Information, Insurgencies, and the Crisis of Colonial Rule in Venezuela poses a deceptively simple question as the springboard to redefine an era of revolutionary turmoil in the Spanish Caribbean: How did people read in late colonial Venezuela? At first sight, the question seems to concern the privileged few. The opposite is true, however. In this innovative book, Soriano reimagines literacy as a communal experience to rediscover the novel spaces in which people of African descent led the debates of the Age of Revolution.

I was invited to speak to my daughter’s 4th grade class by her wonderful teacher. This lesson plan is based on my presentation on “The European Exploration and Settlement of the Americas.”

My goal was to complement the CA Social Studies textbook on European exploration and settlement by explaining how the history of California intersected with that of the wider world. In addition, I introduce the children to the bolts and nuts of history.

In their thank you letters, students had to tell me two things that they learned from my lesson. I was happy to see lots of critical thinking. One of them asked why the people in India did not go to Europe to trade their goods. Another proposed that we build a time-machine to sell our modern-day pepper to Queen Isabella--a get-rich-quick scheme with a decisively historical twist.

Feel free to use any of it for your lesson plan.
