Actually, you can keep the current interface and I will just provide an adapter, sth like the following: <?php

} I like to provide an adapter instead of implementing the interface directly since the bundle can be used standalone right now, and I don't want to add a dependency on the component just for the sake of the interface. However, I do not completely see the purpose of the component. When would someone be recommended to use it? Everything the component does, the bundles does at the same level with the same complexity or simplicity (however you want to view that). |
standalone in what way? you mean even out of the context of Symfony? In that context imho you should ship that code outside of a Bundle. Regardless, how will that adaptor work? How would you implement methods like |
I would just throw exceptions when something is not supported. The more important question though is what is the goal of the component in the long-term, i.e. what problems is it supposed to solve, or in which cases should it be used? Because right now it seems to me - correct me if I'm wrong - that the only purpose is that people don't have to install an extra library. However, that might even be frustrating for users because they need to migrate their code to the bundle as soon as they need to customize the serialization process which you need in 99% of the cases. For deserialization, the situation in the component is even worse. So, if my assessment is correct here (i.e. component to get started fast, if you need more migrate to the bundle), I think it would be better and less painful to have them start with the bundle right away. |
Well then imho it would be better to split the interface. I think the serializer component is sufficient for many situations and imho its easier to grok. Furthermore the normalizer/encoder concept it can be used in situations where JMSSerializerBundle cannot be used. And splitting up the interfaces has exactly the goal of reducing the "frustrations" caused by out growing the the component. |
I don't agree, but it's a subjective thing anyway. So, whatever interface you come up with (preferably as few methods as possible), I will provide an adapter for it. |

This will be an issue as the name is already used by the current interface. You would need to alias it.
And I don't like reusing the same interface short name as it is likely to be confusing.

yes this also concerns me. not sure what better names there are though .. EncoderManagerInterface
and NormalizerManagerInterface
?

btw, this interface could eventually extend both Symfony\Component\Serializer\Encoder\EncoderInterface
and Symfony\Component\Serializer\Encoder\DecoderInterface
as it contains them.
I guess we need to think a bit more about the way these interfaces are related (especially as the way the inheritance could be done is the opposite for the Normalizer part)

well one is sort of a manager or dispatcher of sorts that will use the right encoder for the given format, while the other interface is for the encoders/decoders that do the actual work. for the manager it doesn't make sense to split up the encoding/decoding interfaces, since its generic code anyway, while for the encoder/decoders that do the work you might want to implement just one or the other depending on the format.
so imho the class structure is ok .. its essentially the naming that is iffy (as shown by my bogus use statement).

The thing is, the EncoderManagerInterface
could eventually extend from both other interfaces and add the 3 other methods. The question is "If someones asks for a DecoderInterface somewhere, does it make sense to allow passing the EncoderManagerInterface implementation (taking into account that it has the needed method) ?"
If yes, this would be similar to what is done in the Routing component for RouterInterface
, UrlMatcherInterface
and UrlGeneratorInterface
for instance.

It is not about being aware of the encoder but about managing the different encoders. By looking at the different *AwareInterface
in Symfony, it would be an interface with only one method setEncoder
.

true .. i guess i have the assumption that the EncoderManagerInterface
will always delegate to "actual" Encoders which is also based on the getEncoder
method. that being said .. maybe that method should be dropped since its too implementation specific.

Yeah, I guess this one should be dropped.
And maybe we should add the supportsEncoding($format);
method in the Encoder\EncoderInterface
(as it may make sense here to know if an encoder supports a given format). Currently, the Serializer registers the encoder for a particular format, making it possible to do stupid things (a JsonEncoder for the xml
format ?) and making it harder to reuse the same encoder for several supported format as it requires registering it twice (JsonEncoder makes sense for json
but also for js
)
Then, this interface would become unndeed as a delegating encoder is just a special implementation of the interface. See for instance how we have a ChainProvider in the Security component or a DelegatingTemplatingEngine for instance.
The serializer would then implement' interfaces: SerializerInterface
, Encoder\EncoderInterface
, Encoder\DecoderInterface
(same change in it to add the method) and Normalizer\NormalizerInterface
(this would require adding the supportNormalization
and supportDenormalization
method in the Serializer)

btw, choosing the encoder based on a support*
method defined in it would be more consistent with the way we do similar things in other parts of the framework.

yeah .. i wanted to do that once we are in agreement on the encoder stuff. question then is if we should again split off Denormalization. i guess yes. |

same issue here with the duplicated check
i guess the next big task is to add more tests .. had to fix way too few unit tests with all this shuffling around .. will also help validating the concept. i should also test this out in a production application. |

If you merge it I am afraid I might get lazy and not write tests. This is why I changed the topic to WIP. I promise to finish this on the weekend. Note however I was planning to write the tests for 2.0 and send them via a separate PR. |

this one should only implement SerializerAwareInterface
IMO as it only defines method for this one. This would allow using it for a serializer-aware normalizer which is not a denormalizer (and the opposite)

yes .. this serializer .. since it traverses the tree and decides what is the current normalizer one by one (aka not via visitors as in your implementation). without the supports*() methods it would need to have the normalizer throw exceptions, but this is not exceptional, its the normal code flow to have to iterate to find the correct normalizer. |

hmm .. i guess we could .. these methods in a way are implementation specific and are mainly public because its different objects interacting with each other, though for users of the lib they can also be convenient at times. |
ok i reviewed things again and just removed those two methods, since the possibility for these methods to be feasible is too tied to the implementation and for this particular implementation supportsEncoding() and supportsDecoding() are still available. so all ready to be merged .. |
hmm i realized one thing just now: that commit should also be included in 2.0 .. i am not sure what the most elegant way is to make that happen .. |
