Introduction

Inside the HOSP\SOUND\DATA directory, you should find MINHEAP.DAT as well as six SOUND-X.DAT files. Each file corresponds to an in-game language and can be extracted to find many .wav audio files, limited to a filename of just eight characters each due to a MS-DOS FAT file system limitation.

Extract sounds using CorsixTH

The easiest way to extract sounds from your chosen .DAT file is with CorsixTH itself. To do this, you must find the audio.lua file in your CorsixTH install directory:

  • Mac: CorsixTH.app/Contents/Resources/Lua/audio.lua
  • Linux: ./Lua/audio.lua
  • Windows: Program Files\CorsixTH\Lua\audio.lua

Next, open the file in a text editor, such as Notepad++, and uncomment (by removing the double hyphens "--") the line below, which you will find approximately around line 235. Change the path to the directory you would like the sounds extracted to.

--self:dumpSoundArchive[ [ E:\CPP\2K8\CorsixTH\DataRaw\Sound\ ] ]

This line should look like:

self:dumpSoundArchive[ [ C:\your\path\here\ ] ]

Open CorsixTH and all of the .wav files should be extracted in your chosen directory. The filepath must end with a slash or else it won't work.

Extract sounds using other programs

There are various third-party tools that can be used to extract the sounds from the game.

Sounds List

The table below lists all of the English (SOUND-0.DAT) audio files in the game. In addition to filenames, you will able to see each file's Title and Comment metadata fields, which gives additional hidden information about the game's development, sound authors, and how some sounds were created.

The total filesize of the English extracted sounds will be 16.2 MB.

DKSound (Dungeon Keeper Sound v1.0) Extraction guide

Dungeon Keeper Sound v1.0 was designed for Dungeon Keeper, which uses the same file format as Theme Hospital. When opening a file, you can choose the option for Theme Hospital format files. The program is in French, but it's pretty easy to figure out. The "Extract Selected" feature is a button on the toolbar and does not appear on the menus.
