THE PAPERS IN THE FIRST FIVE SECTIONS OF THIS ISSUE SET THE stage for this concluding section by addressing the origins of the secu lar and engaging the reader in historical debates. The remarks in this concluding section, drawn from a roundtable discussion at the reli gious-secular divide conference, work forward from the foundation established by the preceding papers. These authors speculate on the future of religion and future of secularism. The purpose of organizing this conference was to challenge our categories and to begin to think in new ways. We sought to make ques tions of religion and secularism more complex than they generally are in our public discourse. In this, I think, we have been successful. The papers in this concluding section of the issue represent an attempt at a summary of our debates. The authors were asked at the conference to comment on anything they found interesting, anything they heard in the discussions, or anything that was not said but they felt important to include in the conversation. The brief essays in this section represent the authors’ further development of their remarks at the conference in light of the debates among themselves and the ques tions raised by the audience.

This volume reframes the debate around Islam and women’s rights within a broader comparative literature. It examines the complex and contingent historical relationships between religion, secularism, democracy, law, and gender equality. Part I addresses the nexus of religion, law, gender, and democracy through different disciplinary perspectives (sociology, anthropology, political science, law). Part II localizes the implementation of this nexus between law, gender, and democracy, and provides contextualized responses to questions raised in Part I. The contributors explore the situation of Muslim women’s rights vis-à-vis human rights to shed light on gender politics in the modernization of the nation and to ponder over the role of Islam in gender inequality across different Muslim countries.

The central premise of this paper is that in order to understand the social construction of religion and secularity in East Asia today we need to take a long durée historical approach, which takes into account the colonial encounters between the Christian West and East Asia during three different and distinct phases of globalization. While most of the recent scholarly work on the globalization of the categories of religion and secularity focuses on the second Western hegemonic phase of globalization, this essay focuses on the early modern phase of globalization before Western hegemony.
