Combining ethnographic and historical research conducted in Angola, Portugal, and the United Kingdom, A Prophetic Trajectory tells the story of Simão Toko, the founder and leader of one of the most important contemporary Angolan religious movements. The book explains the historical, ethnic, spiritual, and identity transformations observed within the movement, and debates the politics of remembrance and heritage left behind after Toko’s passing in 1984. Ultimately, it questions the categories of prophetism and charisma, as well as the intersections between mobility, memory, and belonging in the Atlantic Lusophone sphere.

Social scientists and philosophers confronted with religious phenomena have always been challenged to find a proper way to describe the spiritual experiences of the social group they were studying. The influence of the Cartesian dualism of body and mind (or soul) led to a distinction between non-material, spiritual experiences (i.e., related to the soul) and physical, mechanical experiences (i.e., related to the body). However, recent developments in medical science on the one hand and challenges to universalist conceptions of belief and spirituality on the other have resulted in “body” and “soul” losing the reassuring solid contours they had in the past. Yet, in “Western culture,” the body–soul duality is alive, not least in academic and media discourses. This volume pursues the ongoing debates and discusses the importance of the body and how it is perceived in contemporary religious faith: what happens when “body” and “soul” are un-separated entities? Is it possible, even for anthropologists and ethnographers, to escape from “natural dualism”? The contributors here present research in novel empirical contexts, the benefits and limits of the old dichotomy are discussed, and new theoretical strategies proposed.

In this article we chart the histories and political translations of atheist cultures in Angola. We explore the specific translations of atheist ideologies into practical actions that occurred in the post-independence period in the 1970s–1980s and perform an ethnographic exploration of their legacies in contemporary Angola. We also debate the problem of atheism as an anthropological concept, examining the interfaces between ideology, political agency, and social praxis. We suggest that atheism is inherently a politically biased concept, a product of the local histories and intellectual traditions that shape it.

The Leader is the Prophet, the Prophet is the Leader. Continuities and Discontinuities of Charismatic Leadership in the Angolan Context.
Abstract: In this text I propose to debate the problem of religious leadership as it is played out within Angolan Christian prophetic movements. I will discuss the permanent permutability between the political and religious concepts of leadership, using the concept of charisma as a destabilizing element of that relationship, through its participation in the process of definition of the category of prophetism. I argue that charisma is a mechanism of regeneration from socio-political continuities, and not so much an iconoclasm in its pure state, as Max Weber famously argued.

In this article I propose an approach to sacrifice through notions of time, memory and expectation, moving away from classical formalist definitions that highlight the ‘nature and function’ of sacrifice, and into ideas of meaning and experience and their insertion in particular ideologies of time. I will argue that sacrifice entails particular temporalities, participating in political and experiential realms of memory and expectation. For this, I will invoke a particular regime of sacrifice: the notion of self-sacrifice, as it circulates among a prophetic and messianic Christian movement of Angolan origin, the Tokoist Church.

From confusion to irony. Expectations and legacies of the pide in Angola. In this article I propose to describe some examples of dialectics of repression and resistance between the pide and other police authorities in Angola, and an indigenous religious movement, the “Tokoist Church” between the 1950s and 1970s. Firstly, I describe the motivations, fears and expec- tations of the agents of the pide, contrasted with the reactions of leaders and followers of this church who were subject to the campaigns of “securitization” of the colony. And secondly, I will portrait the legacy of the memory that emerged within this movement in contemporary Angola, in which the experi- ence of colonial repression produced a “history of suffering” that reverberates today through narratives of resilience and the particular reaffirmation of an “Angolan-ness” that was often marked by reversals and ironies.

In this article I propose a discussion on an ‘anthropology of repression’. Following previous proposals set forth by French anthropologist Marc Augé, I reflect upon the pertinence of repression for the study of political and experiential dimensions of social life. For this, I draw a conceptual itinerary of repression from an anthropological point of view, and then propose a discussion of two of its underlying problems: that of temporality and dialectics."

This article discusses the issue of proselytism and belonging among Angolan Christians in Europe, namely those belonging to the Tokoist Church, a propheticbased movement originated in Angola in the 1940s and later transnationalized into other African countries and Europe. Invoking fieldwork performed with the church in Lisbon and Luanda, I suggest that religious proselytism in diasporic contexts, as an expression of transnational religiosity, cannot be analyzed without approaching the issue of identity and belonging, which in turn is processed through the production of 'double presences,' a reflection of the multiple agencies and territorialities in which migrants are involved.

In this article I discuss issues of memory and historicity in a contemporary African prophetic movement, the Tokoist church. I do so by focusing on the multiple processes of “biographization” of the prophet’s (Simão Toko) life from the different allegiances within the movement. I suggest that, despite recent critiques on the biographical method, the ethnography of those (unstable and heterogeneous) processes can be very helpful to understand the place of memory and historical consciousness in contemporary Christianity.

And the Messiah Arrived. Re-reading Balandier and African Prophetism in the Postcolony
One of the most impacting theories in the anthropology of Africa of the last decades has been Georges Balandier’s theorization of the “colonial situation”, and namely his portrait of the development of messianic and prophetic religious movements with a strong political accent in the Lower Congo region. In this article I propose to revisit Balandier’s main theories through the case study of two prophetic movements of this region – Kimbanguism and Tokoism – with which, together with my colleague Ramon Sarró, I have developed fieldwork in Portugal and Angola. This essay is also an appraisal of the current pertinence of Balandier’s proposals for the study of these movements in contemporary transnational and postcolonial times.

This paper revisits Marcel Mauss's classical text On Prayer (1909), invoking one of his main arguments - that of the epistemological centrality of the act of prayer in religious phenomena - as a pretext for the analysis of ritual and doctrinal processes in the "Tokoist church", a Christian prophetic movement of Angolan origin. I will do so proposing a comprehensive approach to the seemingly disconnected categories of "prayer" and "space".

In this article I offer a historical and ethnographic account of the Angolan 'Tokoist church'. I start by underlining the reasons behind its 'forgotten history' in terms of academic debates on African Christianity, and then discuss its place within the 'Congo prophet paradigm'. This historical approach opens ground for the discussion between the different doctrinal and ideological tensions (the place of Bakongo ethnicity and Angolan nationality) that motivated its particular institutional growth — tensions and conflicts that are still in play in the recent developments of the church in Angola. Finally, I will argue that the recent transformation of the church into a transnational venture turned out to be a strategy for the overcoming of those tensions.

In this article I intend to describe the processes through which senses and ideas of "Africa-ness" are set in discussion within Pentecostal churches of Angolan frequency in Lisbon. I will show how ideas os "Africa"- and, as referential, "Europe"- are invoked in their local sermons in the context of a pedagogy of religious experience, ideological creativity and determination of "cultural memory". In doing so, I will debate current approaches to memory and religious experience (namely the cognitive approach", in order to describe the processes of transmission that build on those ideas of Africa and Europe, and also make a stance for the importance of "arguments" and "discussion" in processes of religious definition and experience. I will argue that, in contexts of migration and ecounter, senses of religiosity are debated throught methods such as "topographical adscription", "epistemological definition" or "translation".
