Con testi critici e interviste di: Sabina Barcucci, Tatiana Bazzichelli, Silvia Bertolotti, Elena Biserna, Pia Bolognesi, Loretta Borrelli, Simone Broglia, Roberta Busechian, Serena Cangiano, Ana Carvalho, Bianca Cavuti, Alessio Chierico, Lucrezia Cippitelli, Giuseppe Cordaro, Claudia D’Alonzo, Federica Fontana, Tiziana Gemin, Mathias Jansson, Maresa Lippolis, Filippo Lorenzin, Marco Mancuso, Mario Margani, Donata Marletta, Matteo Milani, Maddalena Mometti, Annamaria Monteverdi, Claudio Musso, Bertram Niessen, Pasquale Napolitano, Robin Peckham, Monica Ponzini, Domenico Quaranta, Martina Raponi, Zoe Romano, Silvia Scaravaggi, Daniela Silvestrin, Giulia Simi, Valentina Tanni.

“Investigations on the Cultural Economy of Media Art” is a collection of the heterogeneous perspectives that are contributing to the current discussion about the economies of the Media Art field. Acknowledging the needs of the art market and its role in the commodification and validation of art practices, this book expands its gaze to the whole setting of the art economy. Addressing the issues of conservation and distribution, as well as many other aspects impacting on this sector, a special emphasis is put on new innovative and critical models

Nowadays digital writing has become an important topic within the humanities field so that a closer attention to issues like aesthetic autonomy, theoretic models and practices, especially within the media arts and culture context is demanded. At the base of so-called digital literature are not only the possibilities offered today by the use of computers and other software/multimedia tools, but also different approaches to the literary object, in terms of structure and practice, from both the creative and the receptive point of view, which interlink – but not coincide - with the increased importance of media technologies. Already in 2005 the American environmentalist (and 350.org founder) Bill McKibben pointed out the lack of awareness about climate change and other environmental issues, while addressing a specific call for action to arts: “Oddly, though we know about it, we don’t know about it. It hasn’t registered in our gut; it isn’t part of our culture. Where are the books? The poems? The plays? The goddamn operas?”. We cannot deny the vital role arts and creativity have to play within the energy and environmental field, especially in the current Anthropocene age, where the human impact on climate and nature is dominant and undisputed. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) might be considered by many as synonyms, also because they are the buzzwords of th is decade. But actually they are not. They both question though, the ability of the machines to perform and complete tasks in a “smart” way, challenging human intelligence and specificity. With machines becoming more and more intelligent, Machine Learning is nowadays not only an interesting and challenging topic, but also a crucial discipline. One of the most interesting aspects of our relationship with technology is the way we relate to other people and create new identity narratives through it. Internet, social networks and p2p tools have amplified this phenomenon, enabling the ramification of larger networks built around individuals. As a consequence, personal narratives are linked to virtual (and real) dimensions of social, economic and artistic fields. Digital identity becomes, therefore, the individual unit of a larger digital culture environment. On December 2012, scholars, artists and scientists gathered at Mutamorphosis (Prague, Dec 6-8) to discuss a topic that has become increasingly crucial during our uncertain times: The event was entitled "Tribute to Uncertainty". The project "PHANTOMOLOGY. From micro to macro to reality phenomena" curated by Marco Mancuso, Daniela Tozzi and Ilaria Bignotti, presented by CUBO from 31/01/2019 to 06/04/2019 has followed two different lines of action. On the one hand, it suggested a possible evolution of CUBO artistic proposal by carrying on its research of the last years and inducing a deeper analysis on the relationship among technology, scientific investigation and identity between human beings and their surrounding environment. On the other hand, it deconstructed the classical display modes of contemporary art and narration of New Media Art by fluidly moving among installation elements, performative feedbacks and theoretical and dialogical apparatuses.

CUBO and Unipol spaces (the Art Space, the auditorium, the multimedia library) were thus transformed by the "PHANTOMOLOGY" project into a constantly changing narrative paradigm. They became a delocalized place where the public is asked to reflect on the power of technological changes and on the impact they have from the artistic as well as from the social, cultural and political points of view, thus investigating both the expressive power of nature and its intrinsic capacity of modelling and of aesthetic and formal composition.

On Friday, the 2nd of February 2018 at 19.30, on the occasion of Arte Fiera, Adiacenze inaugurates “Click Clack”, the first ever solo show with the kinetic and interactive installations of the artist and director Virgilio Villoresi, one of the most eclectic and original artists in the Italian and international art world. Curated by Marco Mancuso, critic, curator and director of Digicult, the exhibition, open from the 2nd of February to the 15th of March 2018, is meant to shed light on a lesser known, yet fascinating part of the Villoresi’s artistic production.

Director, set designer, artisan and illusionist, over the past years, Virgilio Villoresi (Fiesole, 1979) has gained recognition in the field of animation and its application in such areas as art, advertisement and music video clips. His distinctive style, which is cultured, elegant and rich with visual phantasmagorias, is part of a particular line of historical and artistic development and research within the field of experimental cinema: Harry Smith’s processes of alchemical synthesis; Jonas Mekas’s structural
ontology; Jack Smith’s art of recycling (reuse); Kenneth Anger’s magical rituals.

Science Gallery Venice (SGV) will become a unique place for art and culture in Italy, to lead a process of change in perceiving what is culture and what is contemporary art, how to spread it together with scientific and technological research. Science Gallery Venice will be an exhibition space, but also a center in which science and technology are brought into contact with people, publics, and students which are tomorrow's creatives and scientists. Science Gallery Venice (SGV) will act as a hub, a focus point for companies, start ups, art institutions, festivals, international prizes, critics, curators, artists, designers coming from different disciplines but interested in working with technologies and sciences. Science Gallery Venice wants to create networks which would bring the Venetian and the Italian territory into contact with the most important subjects which have worked for years in the same fields, on the national and international level by hosting them, creating long-lasting relationships, allowing the exchange of their knowledge and competences, through educational activities, laboratories, and projects on a bigger scale. Science Gallery Venice (SGV) aims to become a unique institution in Italy, but it also wants to characterize itself within the cultural offer of Science Gallery International (SGI).

In January 2016, the Goethe-Institut in south-west Europe (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, and Spain) launched Streaming Egos: a project about the ancient, and yet urgent, issue of identity reframed into contemporary digital culture. Now, the outcome of the artistic research is available online.

The European project Streaming Egos brought together media experts, artists, critics and curators who tackled the theme of digital identity by exploring its risks, limits and advantages when facing the blurred borders in-between virtual and real life. Conceived by the Goethe-Institut in the six participating countries, coordinated by the Goethe-Institut of Paris, curated by the Slow Media Institut and in cooperation with the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf, the project explored the ways digital identities come into being, change and develop under the influence of social media, within the framework of the socio-political status quo of each country. The project resulted in the production of digital materials, artworks and writings that converged into different forms and events: a digital platform for participants to contribute to transnational debate by publicly sharing their critical thoughts and reflections, the exhibition Ego Update. The Future of the Digital Identity run on the 16th and 17th January 2016 in conjunction with the Identity Convention, two days of meetings and debates during which relevant common topics have been identified which have been deepened by contributions to the publication

We have to live with it, because this is the future. Who doesn’t understand it seems to be lost. The helpful models of cultural production in 20th century are dying out; so this generation has not even had time to try them, and it has found itself with nothing for their efforts. For more than a decade, the economies necessary to set processes of media art and culture production have come from banks, private entrepreneurs, external sponsorships on markets that are apparently virgin but obviously ready for commercial contamination just to guarantee their own survival. The common sensation is that even these models are shortly destined to failure. We have to give place to more virtuous processes which correlate closely the research field with the production sector.

In a time of economical crisis and cuts to art and culture, it’s increasing, ideed, the number of international examples, cultural subjects, creative professionals (artists, designers, hackers, makers, musicians, filmmakers, graphic designers ...) and industries – ICT, science research, manufacturing processes, robotcs, biotechnologies, artificial intelligence and more - involved in the standardization of sustainable research and development models in order to activate processes of Open Research that are functional to the creation of a "cultural object".

This publication wants to map the most valuable case studies of Creative Industries and Open Innovation strategies in the world, looking at the those hidden forms of collaborations between artists, designer, scientists, geeks and industries which could represent the future and survival of the contemporary media art scene.

Recent years are witnessing radical transformations in the relationships among art, science, design and society. The progressive de-institutionalization of the forms of production, management and consumption of material and immaterial goods brought by new technologies (desktop manufacturing, DIYscience, 2.0 communities) is reshaping the way we conceive culture, giving more importance to bottom-up taxonomies of reality (i.e. the folksonomies) and questioning traditional paths of change (Open Innovation) and power (p2p communities). Analytically we can say that this phenomena are acting both horizontally and vertically. Horizontally, they are blurring the borders between different fields and disciplines, merging methodologies, languages, tacit and explicit know-hows. Vertically, they are affecting the distinction between “high”, academic approaches and “low”, ingenue ones. This cross-pollination creates enthusiasms and skepticisms at the same time. On one side it's perceived as an unforeseen expansion that will led to continuous innovation. On the other side it's seen a a menace for stability, quality and fairness.

This monographic issue explores this panorama according to six curators specialized in five different fields. Firstly, Bertram Niessen investigates the social ambiguity of digital creativity, the chances given by bottom-up co-production and the challenges offered by web-based practices of creative sharing. Secondly, Claudia D’Alonzo and Marco Mancuso focus on the changes taking place in relation to creation practice, dissemination and fruition of audio-visual artistic contents. Thirdly, Elena Biserna provides an overview on musical artistic practices and, at the same time, showing its significance in the sphere of cultural and everyday practices. As fourth, Sabina Barcucci investigates reasons, state of the art and developments of the relationships among design, education and complexity, looking at the new cognitive forms as the output of such phenomenon. Finally, Alessandro Delfanti examines the problem of the transformation of science expert epistemology, focusing on the political, artistic and cultural dimensions of
biohacking and DIYbio.

Between 1899 and 1904 the german philosopher and biologist Ernst Haeckel published a book of lithographic and autotype prints entitled Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms of Nature), one of his best known works and a symbol of his zoological research and philosophy, centered on the observation of marine micro-organisms as well of various natural species and animals. The complete volume, consisting of over 100 lithographs, each accompanied by a short descriptive text, obtained a great success even among the non-specialist public and among some Art Nouveau artists, committed to find new models to be used in the nascent industrial design and in architecture.

We are witnessing the disintegration of the belief that the Internet was, for its unique nature, a free, participatory medium, in contrast to the medium of television. Positivity of the early years of the Internet is giving way to a situation in which one cannot help but admit that the Internet, even with large areas of autonomy, is subject to the same dangerous political and economic dynamics of traditional media. It becomes crucial not just to understand what is the most democratic medium of the third millennium, but rather open our eyes to the dual nature of all media, to identify ways in which we learn to move strategically between truth and deception.

Globalne Ocieplenie / The Mediagate exhibition at GALERIA NT / Imaginarium in Łódź, Poland from 16/04 to 16/05/2010, was curated by Marco Mancuso and Claudia D'Alonzo. In the last years the spread of informatics has brought to a revolution that is still in progress, both regarding the instruments and the ways of making art, and the modalities of production and display of the creative act. A constant contamination and reprocessing of the languages is destroying the boundaries among the different forms of artistic expression and, at the same time, is perceiving the viewer as an active character, involved in multiple forms of participation: live media, networking, interactive exhibitions, interaction, urban design.

Direzione artistica: Paolo Rigamonti, Curatori: Marco Mancuso, Silvio Mondino, Tiziana Gemin, Maria Grazia Mattei, Hangar Bicocca Milano, 26-28/05/2006

In contemporary society, the impact that technological progress and scientific research exert on our life is evident and unequivocal. The effects brought about by these new phenomena will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping our next future, both in positive and negative terms. Nowadays, we are witnessing the fast spread of innovative elements such as prosthesis, wearables devices and ingestible sensors; an unprecedented progress in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) research and neuroscience; the emergence of innovative perspectives and opportunities brought about by biotechnology and genetic advancement.

Per troppo amore… Perhaps this text is born from too much love — love for the work and the journey of Alterazioni Video. Perhaps it comes as a result of the last three days spent in close contact with Giacomo and Caffa — I guess it’s my way of processing them. Or perhaps this text simply emerges as a celebration of one of those nights that never seem to end, that sail against the wind from place to place (how could I forget Dusseldorf’s Club Kulisse?), from person to person (ask around for Roman), and from situation to situation (best to leave it at that). Those are the nights that you know will stay with you for a while.

One of the most interesting aspects of our relationship with technology and how we communicate with other people through technology is the way we build up meaning around the narrative of our identities. The internet, social networks and p2p structures have boosted this phenomenon, facilitating the creation of increasingly large networks built around individuals and their personal narratives in relation to virtual (and real) audiences — which are selected on the basis of personal relationships but also increasingly by taking into account social, economic and professional processes. When interacting with other people on the Net, individuals reflect more and more on themselves, carefully choosing contents (whether personal or not) which others may see. This leads to a self-discourse which redefines the whole notions of identity, repetition and difference.

We’ve got to start living with it, the future is here; those who do not take it in are lost. The twentieth-century sustenance models of artistic and cultural production are disappearing and our generation has not had the time to test them all the way. In Western countries, state subsidies for culture, as well as funds provided by enlightened (and interested) sponsors, are ever more scarce and concentrated in the hands of a few representatives of a social
and economic elite that is busy occupying and consolidating its roles and positions.

In recent years, the development of digital technologies provided new tools for the increasing of a new form of internet. The so called Web 2.0 is, clearly today, a radical evolution of the Internet as we knew it in the last 15 years: a democratic land in which users become an active part of the system, producing contents on one side and selecting and aggregating informations and culture items on the other side. The definition of "prosumer" is today witnessing a new sort of hybrid social and creative subject: a user hungry for pieces of open informations, anxious to produce and share cultural and social tools through peer-to-peer collaborative activities with/for communities, close to bottom-up taxonomies of reality (i.e. the folksonomies, systems of classification derived from the practice and method of collaboratively creating and managing tags to annotate and categorize contents), but also careful to develope its social capital through the effective use of the new social networks and platforms.

What is intended today as Audiovisual Art? Which is the result of an artistic journey that started from the avant-guarde artistic movements of the last centuries and the pioneering experiments of artists, video makers and musicians working with analog and electronic technologies like lights, paintings, cinema, architecture, video, contemporary and classical music and sound? And, what is remaining today of the techno – enthusiasm of the beginning of the XXI century, coming from the synthetic integration between audio and video components through the use of a new powerful generation of software and hardware technologies?

What is today recognized as "immersive art-science" is a form of creative expression meant to rise above the notion of art as abstract representation. This historical-critical statement of this lecture is to map those audiovisual artists acting with a “discovery approach”, observing and recording, working without the use of video or digital tecniques but obtaining the flux of sound and images only by natural and spontaneous scientific phenomena.

Treviso, November 2008. Fabrica, Benetton's communication research centre, hosts on 25-28 November 2008 a workshop held by futurologist and author Bruce Sterling, one of the founders and leading promulgators of cyberpunk sci-fi. The Sterling workshop theme takes its cue from the concept of generative art, i.e. a process which develops with a certain degree of autonomy to produce a work of art or design. When generative art is computer-based, windows are opened onto otherwise unimaginable fields of human creativity. The computer becomes a vehicle for exploring new territories and boosting our understanding of creativity as an inseparable synthesis of art and science.

The workshop was also enriched by a contribution from Marco Mancuso, who is a critic, art curator and the founder and director of Digicult. Mancuso attended the presentation of the workshop’s results and offer his comments as a conclusion to the proceedings.

Andy Deck è pioniere dell’arte concettuale in rete.

Equanimity, the hologram portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, was commissioned by the Jersey Heritage Trust to commemorate eight hundred years of the island’s allegiance to the British Crown. Chris Levin uses ten thousand images and 3D data sets of the Queen to create a hologram mounted on glass and enlightened by a row of LED. The work portrays the Queen with the Diadem, worn by Elizabeth II on the day of her coronation in 1953. The title refers to Vipassana meditation, in which the term “equanimity” means observing sensation without craving for pleasant sensations and aversion for unpleasant ones, necessary to achieve personal balance. This is what the Queen represents, a composure that is not common in everyday contemporary craziness

Agostino Di Scipio’s Stanze Private seeks to build an ecosystem: a self-sustaining system of life, upon which all agents, including ourselves, exert a fundamental albeit unpredictable influence. With Stanze Private Di Scipio invites us to become part of his sonic ecosystem and to contemplate its evolution, while witnessing the unpredictability of nature, along with our inability to exercise full control over external phenomena, to seclude ourselves from unwanted influences, to establish our privacy.

Prince and Migrant Birds is an interactive installation in which participants can enjoy a scene from the The Little Prince novel, written by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. The Little Prince leaves his star and travels to see the planets, accompanied by migrant birds: in Prince and Migrant Birds, by revealing the light of a glowing sphere, which is the symbol of the Little Prince’s star, birds fly away in unison from the hand of the participant. When participants move the sphere, they will be connected to the strings of the migrant birds,
fluttering their wings. By walking in the installation space, participants can journey through the universe as if they’re flying between the stars together with the birds.

Opto-Isolator inverts the condition of spectatorship by exploring the questions: “What if artworks could know how we were looking at them? And, given this knowledge, how might they respond to us?”. The sculpture presents a solitary mechatronic blinking eye, at human scale, which responds to the gaze of visitors with a variety of psychosocial eye-contact behaviors that are at once familiar and unnerving. Opto-Isolator was developed and fabricated in collaboration with Greg Baltus of Standard Robot Company, Pittsburgh, with support from the Creative Capital Foundation, from the Berkman Faculty Development Fund at Carnegie Mellon University, and from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts fellowship award program.

Microphones is an interactive installation featuring one or more 1939-vintage Shure microphones, placed on mic stands around the exhibition room at diff erent heights. Each microphone has been modifi ed so that its head contains a tiny loudspeaker and a circuit board connected to a network of hidden computers. When a public member speaks into a microphone, it records his or her voice and immediately plays back the voice of a previous participant, as an echo from the past.

Cell Mass N2 takes raw footage of improvised and choreographed performances by the Australian Dance Theatre, to which Gina Czarnecki applied digital compositional techniques in the editing stage. The result is a powerful and compelling hybrid of visual art, experimental media, technology and dance. The imagery of Cell Mass N2 evolves from complex masses of cell-like structures, to graceful friezes of bodies whose movement is distorted in time, creating tableaux both breathtaking in beauty and rich in texture. A specially commissioned soundtrack composed by the acclaimed Austrian electronic artist Christian Fennesz accompanies the work
