This paper aims to sum up the findings of the indigenous presence in the Alcantara Valley, during the Final Bronze Age and the Iron Age. Despite the small amount compared to other areas of the island and the contradictory informations provided by the the written sources, the valley exposes relevant archeological evidence of this presence. In addition to the elements already pubblished regarding bronze artefacts and indigenous pottery from Francavilla, the still ongoing research on the rock cut evidence of the Alcantara Valley, gives new significant data. regarding burial practices. In particular some small necropolis of rock-cut tombs dating to the Iron Age, on a typological basis.
This paper is part of a still ongoing research on the rock-cut evidence of the Alcantara Valley. The river rises in the Nebrodi mountains, runs for 50 km and flows into the Ionian sea. The valley provides several unpubblished or scarcely investigated rock-cut sites. In particolar, the present work focuses on some necropolis dating to the Iron Age, on a typological basis. Despite the small amount compared to other areas of the island and the contradictory informations provided by the the written sources, they represent a relevant evidence of the indigenous presence in the Iron Age, inland Naxos.
