This study investigates how tablet users react when technology falls short of their expectations. We deploy a data/frame model to study this process and investigate resistance-related reactions and the deployment of accommodating practices at the individual level. Analyzing user blogs that provide narratives on user interaction with tablets, we identify triggers of episodes of disillusionment and illustrate five sensemaking paths that users follow, eventually leading to one of three practices: 1) users choose to defer tasks until the situation changes, or they abandon the platform altogether; 2) they develop workarounds at different levels of proficiency; or 3) they proceed by reframing their expectations of the platform. By revealing user decision-making process during episodes of disillusionment, the findings contribute to information systems post-adoption research. At a practical level, the findings inform IT artifact and application design by offering insights on how users proce...

In a digital economy characterised by rapid technological advances and previously uncharted entrepreneurial territories, the task of predicting the future layout of industries and value chains becomes exceedingly important, albeit also highly problematic. As a result, scholars face difficulties in their attempts to theorise on the real strategic implications of the digital economy, while many practitioners fail to become and

Modelling has always been at the core of both organisational design and Information Systems (IS) development. Models enable decision-makers to filter out the irrelevant complexities of the real world, so that efforts can be directed towards the most important parts of the system under study. However, both business analysts and IS professionals may find it difficult to navigate through a

ABSTRACT This paper examines the interplay between meaning and emotion of tablet users during the interaction with these artifacts. Following an interpretive case study approach, we examine users’ meaning making as the context of use changes from the business context to the personal environment, trailing users’ interpretation of the tablet and their overall experience, in order to detect changes in their feeling states and understand their emotional experience with the IT artifact. Having examined mainly on-the-go professionals, our findings illustrate that the tablet is considered as a compelling device, being interpreted simultaneously as an extension of the office environment, while being mobile or at home, as a multimedia and content consumption station and as communal device, awarding or strengthening the social character of group activities. In addition, the findings suggest that users develop an attachment to the device, by either personalizing it and approaching it as a companion, or by attributing to it a symbolic significance, by recognizing a value in its expressive characteristics and assessing it as a ‘possession to own’. Our findings demonstrate that, as the tablet moves from the business to the home environment, gradually losing its utilitarian purpose, changes in feeling states become more significant and the emotional experience intensifies.

Although the inherent interrelationships between Business Processes (BP) and theunderlying Information Technology (IT) infrastructure imply that the design of thesetwo organisational facets should be performed in parallel, this doesn't seem to be thecase in practice. For example, simulation is being extensively used in both the BP andIT domains, albeit in a disjoined fashion. In this paper, we investigate the potential

ABSTRACT The tourism industry is among the top three industries worldwide in terms of volume and economic significance. Many countries depend part of their annual GDP on tourism and especially Europe which is the major destination of worldwide tourism. According to World Tourism Organization (WTO) [1] Europe holds more that half of the global tourism traffic. The structure of tourism industry includes a lot of different involved actors and the value chains developed are in general long and complex. This is due to the special attributes of the tourist product which involve a lot of decisions with limited amount of information at hand. In fact the industry is very information intensive. On the other hand as mobile commerce evolves; content delivery is revolutionized by offering content anytime, anywhere. Ubiquitous computing though, did not only offer new channels of information distribution but paved the road for old applications to evolve into a completely new and different service offering. One of these applications that are going to be more and more popular in the coming few years is auctioning of tourism products through mobile devices. Of course, auctioning of tourism products is not a new idea, but the new modes of operation (e-commerce, m-commerce) radically affect both the back-office and the front-desk operations. In this paper we are going to present the solution developed as part of the IST-ESTIA project to support auctioning and reverse auctioning of tourism products and services over mobile devices, considering various aspects such as special attributes of the product, limitations of the communication channel, business requirements etc.

ABSTRACT This paper presents a lifestyle-based approach for the delivery of personalized advertisements in digital interactive television. The theoretical basis of the approach is analyzed, and two variations are discussed. The first (segmentation variation) relies on interaction-based classification of users into lifestyle segments, while the second (similarities variation) is based on the identification of similarities among users based on demographic and TV program preferences data. In both variations, the user's interest is predicted by aggregating lifestyle neighbors' preferences. Results from an empirical validation, in the form of a laboratory experiment, are also presented in order to provide further evidence on the effectiveness and usefulness of the proposed approach when compared with machine learning algorithms, such as classification and nearest neighborhood. The superiority of the proposed approach is also demonstrated against user modeling evaluation methodologies, as well as against traditional marketing targeting practices.

ABSTRACT Technology acceptance theories predict user intentions to use services tailored for organisational needs. However, in this paper, we postulate that the aforementioned theories do not apply when investigating intentions towards the use of mobile data services (MDS), as the latter encompasses supplementary characteristics, such as fun and enjoyment, which are not taken into account under available models of user acceptance. The incorporation of the affective dimension is proposed by reintroducing the Triandis theory of human behaviour to the MDS domain. A web-based survey (N = 219) was conducted to investigate our research hypotheses and validate our model of MDS usage intention. Results showed that the MDS usage intention can be predicted by cognitive and affective factors under the lens of social influences. Additionally, the main antecedents of MDS actual use are perceived usefulness, perceived value and intention to use MDS.

Prior to adopting Electronic Commerce (E-Comm), organisations need to assess its real business value and compare it to the costs of the associated investments. The intangible nature of most E-Comm benefits may render the development of a business case very difficult in practice. In this paper, we present a case study of E-Comm investment evaluation. Computer-based models of the business processes to be affected by E-Comm were developed and dynamically simulated to assist in gaining insight on the real benefits and dangers associated with the planned business change. Drawing on the results of the case study, we discuss the potential of Dynamic Process Modelling to support assessment of E-Comm business value.

ABSTRACT This study attempts to investigate the potential differences among individual adoption patterns between mobile portal and mobile internet services usage. A theoretical model that reflects six unique predominant factors of IS usage is developed and is empirically tested using data collected from mobile data services (MDSs) users (116 mobile internet users and 178 mobile portal users). The results indicate that there are differences among the adoption behaviour of mobile portal users and mobile internet users. Specifically, mobile internet use is likely to be driven by utilitarian expectations and the perceived usefulness of accessing the web through this alternative medium. Conversely, mobile portals use is likely to be dependent on the users' personal innovativeness and is not significantly affected by the utility of the mobile service itself. Moreover, we find indirect effects of performance expectancy, facilitating conditions and social influence to the behavioural intention to use mobile internet.

ABSTRACT Mobile phone advertisements, in the form of text messages (SMS), are becoming increasingly recognized as an important form of product promotion. The purpose of this paper is to investigate factors influencing the effectiveness of SMS advertisements by using a hierarchy of effects approach. We employ a field experiment with 736 respondents to examine how consumers react to SMS advertisements and identify factors that influence their attitude towards the ads (Aad), attitude towards the brands (Ab), and purchase intentions (PI). Perceived ad credibility, attitude towards mobile advertising, message appeal, argument quality, incentive, and interactivity were found to be antecedents of Aad. Moreover, Aad influences Ab, while purchase intentions are influenced by both Aad and Ab. This is one of the first studies to provide a holistic model for predicting consumer attitudes and purchase intentions as affected by SMS ads.

We propose a design theory that tackles dynamic complexity in the design for Information Infrastructures (IIs) defined as a shared, open, heterogeneous and evolving socio-technical system of Information Technology (IT) capabilities. Examples of IIs include the Internet, or industry-wide Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) networks. IIs are recursively composed of other infrastructures, platforms, applications and IT capabilities and controlled by emergent, distributed and episodic forms of control. II's evolutionary dynamics are nonlinear, path dependent and influenced by network effects and unbounded user and designer learning. The proposed theory tackles tensions between two design problems related to the II design: (1) the bootstrap problem: IIs need to meet directly early users’ needs in order to be initiated; and (2) the adaptability problem: local designs need to recognize II's unbounded scale and functional uncertainty. We draw upon Complex Adaptive Systems theory to de...
