詞源

來自拉丁語 GermānusGermānī (“來自Germānia的民族”),不同於Gauls (在凱撒和塔西佗的著作中),最初源頭不明 (可能是凱爾特語族/高盧語)。

german (關係密切的)germane無關 (來自拉丁語形容詞germānus,經由古法語)。

至少在1520年開始出現。取代了英語中較早的術語AlmainDutch (來自原始日耳曼語 *þiudiskaz)。除了德語、日耳曼語、荷蘭語的同源詞外,其他語言中表示德國人的兩類詞源一個是Saxon的同源詞和原始斯拉夫語 *němьcь的派生詞;更多資訊參閱這些條目。
