Renewable energy in Morocco - statistics & facts
Due to its geography, Morocco has vast wind, water, and solar resources to exploit for power generation. Renewables have played an increasingly important role in Morocco’s energy sector. By shifting toward cleaner energy sources, the country has become one of the largest renewable energy markets on the African continent, with a renewable capacity of 4.4 gigawatts in 2024. Morocco’s government has set ambitious targets, aiming at reaching 52 percent of the power generation from green sources by 2030 and 80 percent by 2050.
Trends in the hydropower segment
Morocco’s hydropower capacity has remained steady at 1.77 gigawatts for several years before rising to 2.12 gigawatts in 2024. However, production fluctuated over the same period, peaking at 2,990 gigawatt hours in 2013 and reaching a low of 1,290 gigawatt hours in 2020. The Afourer Pumped Storage Station (STEP d’Afourer), the Al Wahda Dam, and the Allal El Fassi Dam are some of the leading hydropower plants in Morocco in terms of net annual production. Additionally, hydropower is also Morocco’s second-leading source of electricity after coal.A growing wind power market
Morocco has a high wind energy potential. The country has significantly increased its wind energy capacity in recent years, from 255 megawatts in 2012 to around 2.13 gigawatts in 2024. As a result, Morocco nowadays has the third-highest wind energy generation capacity on the African continent, after Egypt and South Africa. The largest wind farms are located in the desert zones near Tarfaya and Western Sahara. Morocco also has sizeable offshore wind potential in Gibraltar and the Atlantic Ocean, which has yet to be fully explored.Significant solar energy potential
Morocco’s solar energy capacity grew substantially from only 35 megawatts in 2012 to 934 megawatts in 2024. Solar power generation followed a similar trend, reaching 1,848 gigawatt hours in 2021. Once again, the country ranked among the leading African nations for solar energy capacity due to its vast desert areas and long sunshine hours. Morocco is also a prominent solar energy market worldwide. In 2023, it had the fifth-highest installed concentrated solar power capacity globally, after the world leaders Spain, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, and China.
