Introduction to
Light
What is Light?
• Light is a type of energy we
can see.
• It travels in waves through
space.
R e fl e c t i o n o f
Light
• Bouncing back of light
from a surface.
• Angle of incidence =
Angle of reflection.
Spherical
Mirror
• A spherical mirror is a
mirror that has the
shape of a segment cut
out from a spherical
surface.

Mirror
• Concave Mirror:
Converges light rays;
used in makeup
mirrors and
headlights.
• Convex Mirror:
Diverges light rays;
used in rear-view
Uses Of Spherical
Mirror
• Concave Mirrors: Used in
telescopes, satellite dishes,
headlights, and shaving mirrors.
• Convex Mirrors: Used for rear-
view mirrors in vehicles,
security mirrors in stores, and
cameras for wider perspectives.

Re f r a c t i v e I n d ex
• Defined as the ratio
of the speed of light
in a vacuum to that
in a medium.
• Higher refractive
index means greater
bending of light.
Lens
• A lens is a transparent
optical device that
refracts light to form
images.
• Made of glass or
plastic with curved
surfaces.
Types of Lenses
• Convex Lens (Converging Lens):
• Thicker in the middle and thinner at the
edges.Converges light rays to a focal
point. Forms real and virtual images
based on object position.Concave
• Lens (Diverging Lens):
• Thinner in the middle and thicker at
the edges.Diverges light rays, causing
them to spread out.Always forms
virtual, upright, and diminished
Uses of Lens
1. Uses Of Convex Lenses
• Eyeglasses, Cameras, Door Peep
Holes, Multi-junction Solar Cells
2. Uses of concave lenses
• Correction nearsightedness, light
projection, flashlights, lasers
