Sources of Job Information
Factors to Consider When Seeking
Employment
• You should be able to assess job opportunities to ensure
that you will be doing a job you enjoy, earning enough
money to live and working in a location that suits you.
The factors are listed below:

• Career Interests-What career do you want to follow?

How do you see yourself in five years’ time? What jobs
will act as stepping stones to help you to achieve your
goal? As an administrator you could work for the
government or a private business, in areas as varied as
retail and banking. You could work in several different
areas, for example, reception, information management,
sales, human resources or accounts.
Factors to Consider When Seeking
Employment Cont’d
• Job Description-The job description will identify the
duties and responsibilities of the job holder and state
the minimum qualifications and experience required
for the job. Check that you meet these. If you do not,
it is unlikely that you will be given an interview.

• Personal Taste-Are you shy and prefer to work

behind the scenes, or would you enjoy helping
customers? Are you happy to be behind a desk or
would you prefer a job where you travel around?
Would you prefer to do more specialized work in a
large organization or work in a small business where
you know everyone?
Factors to Consider When Seeking
Employment Cont’d
• Training and qualifications-What qualifications
do you have now? What additional qualifications do
you need to achieve your goals and when/where can
you obtain these? Can you train on the job or would
you be able to study part time?

• Salary, fringe benefits-What salary is being

offered – and can you live on it? Are there any
fringe benefits, such as medical care, dental
treatment, free uniforms or discounted shopping?
(Fringe benefits are additional items paid for by the
employer on top of salary)
Factors to Consider When Seeking
Employment Cont’d
• Location-How long will it take you to get to
work and how much will your travel cost? Will
you be near to your friends and family, or will
you have to move away from home? If you
have to move, what would your living costs be?

• Image of the firm-Does the business have a

good reputation? Will you be proud to say you
work there? How well known is it in your
area? What do people say about the working
conditions?
Factors to Consider When Seeking
Employment Cont’d
• Career advancement- If you work hard,
will there be opportunities for promotion?
Will the job give you a chance to develop
and improve your skills and knowledge?
Or is it a dead-end job with few prospects
for improvement?
