Date: October 7, 2020 Grade:11CM Teacher: Ms. Crawford Class Objectives • By the end of the lesson students will be able to: • identify at least FOUR (4) sources of information on job opportunities. • briefly describe each source of information on job opportunities without consulting their notes • correctly outline THREE (3) factors to be considered when seeking employment Introduction to Recruitment and Orientation • Whenever you apply for a job there are certain factors to bear in mind to make sure that you only target suitable vacancies. • Question 1. What are some of the sources that you can get information about jobs? 2. What are the factors to consider when seeking employment? Sources of Job Information Factors to Consider When Seeking Employment • You should be able to assess job opportunities to ensure that you will be doing a job you enjoy, earning enough money to live and working in a location that suits you. The factors are listed below:
• Career Interests-What career do you want to follow?
How do you see yourself in five years’ time? What jobs will act as stepping stones to help you to achieve your goal? As an administrator you could work for the government or a private business, in areas as varied as retail and banking. You could work in several different areas, for example, reception, information management, sales, human resources or accounts. Factors to Consider When Seeking Employment Cont’d • Job Description-The job description will identify the duties and responsibilities of the job holder and state the minimum qualifications and experience required for the job. Check that you meet these. If you do not, it is unlikely that you will be given an interview.
• Personal Taste-Are you shy and prefer to work
behind the scenes, or would you enjoy helping customers? Are you happy to be behind a desk or would you prefer a job where you travel around? Would you prefer to do more specialized work in a large organization or work in a small business where you know everyone? Factors to Consider When Seeking Employment Cont’d • Training and qualifications-What qualifications do you have now? What additional qualifications do you need to achieve your goals and when/where can you obtain these? Can you train on the job or would you be able to study part time?
• Salary, fringe benefits-What salary is being
offered – and can you live on it? Are there any fringe benefits, such as medical care, dental treatment, free uniforms or discounted shopping? (Fringe benefits are additional items paid for by the employer on top of salary) Factors to Consider When Seeking Employment Cont’d • Location-How long will it take you to get to work and how much will your travel cost? Will you be near to your friends and family, or will you have to move away from home? If you have to move, what would your living costs be?
• Image of the firm-Does the business have a
good reputation? Will you be proud to say you work there? How well known is it in your area? What do people say about the working conditions? Factors to Consider When Seeking Employment Cont’d • Career advancement- If you work hard, will there be opportunities for promotion? Will the job give you a chance to develop and improve your skills and knowledge? Or is it a dead-end job with few prospects for improvement? Lesson Summary • The teacher will ask students to share their answers in the WhatsApp group, to: • Identify sources of information for job opportunities. • Outline factors to be considered when seeking employment. Assignment 1. Differentiate between unsolicited application and solicited application. 2. Give FIVE examples of fringe benefits
