Exponential Function

The document defines and provides examples of exponential functions. An exponential function can be written in the form f(x)=bx, where b is a constant base and x is the exponent. Functions of the form f(x)=x, f(x)=3x, and f(x)=2x+1 are exponential, while functions like f(x)=x2 and f(x)=1/x are not. Exponential functions have domains of all real numbers, ranges of positive real numbers, and pass through the point (0,1). Their graphs approach but do not reach the x-axis. The document also shows how to graph exponential functions and transform between exponential and logarithmic equations.

EXPONENTIAL
FUNCTION What is an
Exponential Function?

2
It can be written in the form where , and x is
any real number. b is a contant called the base
and x is an independent variable called the
exponent.

PROPERTIES OF AN EXPONENTIAL FUNCTION
▪ The domain is the set of real numbers.
▪ The range is the set of positive real numbers.
▪ If , f is increasing exponential function. If , f is a decreasing exponential
function
▪ The function passes through point (0,1) because any number raised to 0
will be 1.
▪ The graph approaches but does not reach the x-axis. The axis is the
horizontal asymptote.
