Did you notice the movement of the melody? How
did it move in the song “Mary Had a Little Lamb”?

Melodic Contour
It is defined as the shape and sequence of a
melodic line. Melodic contour depends on the
movement between each note of the melody.
MOVEMENT OF MELODY
Melody can go in different directions. Sometimes it goes
up, sometimes it goes down.

When melody goes up, the movement is called ascending.

INTERVALS
It is the building blocks of scales,
chords, and melodies. It tells the
distance between two pitches. It helps
us tell whether a pitch stepped up or
down, skipped, or stayed in the same
spot.

Let’s look at the example on the side.

The direction of the note is upward, but


how far did it move to the next pitch?
INTERVALS It stepped up.

two intervals, the pitch stepped up or down. If
the distance is three or more, it skipped. Look
at the example on the side, it shows that DO
has a distance of five intervals to SO. The
movement is upward, thus the movement is
Skip Up.
ACTIVITY
Compose a two-bar melodic line in
quadruple meter using the pitches B, A,
and G. Feel free to use different melodic
contours.
