The Power of Mind: The Whole Brain Theory

The document summarizes research on brain lateralization and theories of brain functioning. It discusses Paul Broca's studies showing language lateralization to the left hemisphere. Roger Sperry developed the split-brain theory showing the left and right hemispheres perform different tasks. Paul MacLean identified three parts of the brain responsible for different functions. Ned Herrmann proposed the brain dominance theory of four quadrants of brain functioning responsible for different cognitive styles and preferences.

The Power of Mind

The Whole
Brain Theory
Introduction
Scientists, medical doctors ,
psychologists and psychiatrists have
always been fascinated with the brain
and how it works
In 1861, PAUL BROCA, conducted a
studies on the language and left-right
brain specialization on patient who had
problems with language.
Dr. Roger Sperry
He studied epilepsy, who gave him noble Prize for
Physiology or Medicine in 1981
He explained that brain has 2 hemisphere that
performs tasks differently from each other
Left hemisphere, performs tasks that were
- Intuitive
- Creative
- synthesizing
Continuation…
Right hemisphere was more adept
with analytical, logical, reasoning
and critical thinking.
He was known as “THE SPLIT-
BRAIN THEORY”
Dr. Paul Mac Lean
Identified three distinct parts of the brain
- Neocortex /Rational Brain
- Limbic system
- Reptilian complex

the NEOCORTEX or RATIONAL Brain is responsible for

intellectual task(language, planning, abstraction,
perception)
Limbic system/Intermediate brain is responsible for
motivation and emotion involved in feeding, reproductive
behavior, and parental behavior

Primitive/reptilian complex, controls the self

preservation and aggressive behavior of humans similar
with survival instincts of animals
Dr. Ned Herrmann
After drawing study from Sperry, he came up with his
own theory called “Brain Dominance Theory”
He was tasked to determine why some individuals
were more creative than others?
He explained people normally have more dominant
part of the body (leg , eye, arm) which often
Continuation…….. Herrmann

He labeled the four quadrants of the brain

Upper left (A) Cerebral Mode
Lower left (B) Limbic Mode
Lower Right (C) Limbic Mode
Upper Right (D) Limbic System
QUADRANT A - Analytical thinking
Key words : Auditive, logical, factual, critical,
technical and quantitative.
Preferred activities : collecting data, analysis,
understanding how things work, judging ideas based on
facts, criteria and logical reasoning.
QUADRANT B - Sequential thinking
Key words : safekeeping, structured, organized,
complexity or detailed, planned.
Preferred activities : following directions, detail
oriented work, step-by-step problem solving,
organization and implementation.
QUADRANT C - Interpersonal thinking
Key words : Kinesthetic, emotional, spiritual,
sensory, feeling.
Preferred activities : listening to and expressing ideas,
looking for personal meaning, sensory input, and
group interaction.
QUADRANT D - Imaginative thinking
Key words : Visual, holistic, intuitive, innovative, and
conceptual.
Preferred activities : Looking at the big picture, taking
initiative, challenging assumptions, visuals, metaphoric
thinking, creative problem solving, long term
thinking.
