Computer Networks Term Project

SHORT TERM2023
Short Term 2025

PART 1: The Case Basis of the Project

A shoe apparel company is building its Asia-Pacific office in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig
City. Part of its goal to realize this objective is to open up its door on possible start-up
groups like your CS 231 Project groups to conceptualize the design of its office. The
company is leasing an office space in the 23rd floor of the Arthaland Century Pacific Tower
wherein the office space is 1,550.90 square meters. The exterior walls of Arthaland Century
Pacific property office being leased is equipped with SentryGlas® interlayer is used in
the double skin glass facades. Figure 1 shows an exterior photo of the Arthaland Century
Pacific Tower. The floor plan for the leased property is shown in Figure 2.

Figure 1: Arthaland Century Pacific Tower

The office requirements of the company are as follows:

A. LAYOUT and FLOOR PLAN

1. Overall layout of the built design should maximize the glass façade office floor area
space being leased. Figure 2 shows the overall floor plan of the proposed office. Part
of your task is to mathematical estimates of the dimensions that sums up to the total
floor area that was provided. Make sure that this is discussed on your
documentation. Subsequent drawing on office furnitures should refer to the
dimensions computed.

Figure 2: the 23rd floor plan of the Arthaland Century Pacific Tower

2. DEPARTMENTS and EMPLOYEES. There are 3 departments, Creatives Department

housing a minimum of 25 minimum to a maximum of 30 employees including 2
managers; SED(Shoe Engineering Department) housing a minimum of 30 minimum to
a maximum of 40 employees including 2 managers; the Admin Department housing
15 – 18 employees including 3 managers. A country manager is assigned overall to
manage the operations of the company.
The overall layout should be able to accommodate these requirements and as a
designer be able to rationalize the allotted floor are for each department. A 2-D floor
plan should be presented as key component of this requirement. Office furniture
should be included as part of the 2d layout.
3. FLOOR SPACE CONCEPT. Each department should have an office layout that
accommodates a team-oriented design and also consider a modern office design
concept wherein space is maximized wherein office desks will be assigned and should
be able to include storage space for all employees. Managers have their own office
which is typically, 20-25 square meters each. A restroom to be able to accommodate
4 cubicles and urinals(for men’s rest room only) and a wash area should be devised
for the men and women. The proposed floor space concept should be rationalized
and its details discussed into why such proposal fits the company’s specs.
4. SERVER ROOM. The company is requiring the designer to build an “industry-standard
server room” that will accommodate its equipment. The server room should be
housed in (6 meters x 4 meters) glass enclosed space. Details of the layout of the
server room equipment is part of the work task. All cables leading to computer
terminals all ends up in the server room. Make sure to present a floor plan and
equipment layout for this room.
5. LOUNGE AREA, RECEPTION, PANTRY, and other rooms. The company challenges
design builders to conceptualize the following areas wherein it sees itself as
accommodating 30-50 visitors visiting the site. Area where employees can take a
break or eat their meals should also be part of the over-all layout of the office. The
company is giving designers a freehand to suggest some other spaces which they
think would be necessary for the office. Make sure to include other areas for health
and wellness as modern design requirements for offices.

B. NETWORK DESIGN and LAYOUT

1. STRUCTURED CABLING. The design of the office should strictly follow the standards
of structured cabling. A separate structured cabling design indicating all details
should be created and integrated to overall aesthetics of the office space. A 2D floor
plan should be presented for the overall route of cables. Other details to comply
with the industry-grade structured cabling requirement should comply with the
manuals/materials given in class during the previous laboratory requirements.
2. SWITCHES CABLES and COOLING SYSTEM. Part of the work to be done for company
requires the procurements of switching equipment and/or routers to IMPLMENT a 3-
layer hierarchy of implementation. The hierarchy should ensure that security
requirements for applications and hardware would be accommodated. This means
that part of the equipment that will be purchased should provide details of the
equipment to be purchased including the rack system that will be utilized. The
company also seeks help in creating an air-conditioning plan for these equipments.
All of the said equipment resides in the server room. Make sure that you rationalize
all choices made on this component of the project.
3. PORTS for employees. The company is requiring 2 ethernet ports for each desk
assigned to an employee or manager and 5 ethernet ports for all managers. All ports
assigned should be managed.
4. WIRELESS NETWORK. The company is also requiring the full implementation of a Wi-
Fi network. The overall design and implementation include the layout of the
ENTERPRISE-GRADE Wi-Fi system and should at least implement WIFI 6 standard.
Equipment that will be utilized for its implementation is given as a requirement. A
separate overall Wi-Fi layout should be presented wherein the 2D floor plan be
presented to integrate the layout for the wireless network. Also include on this
proposal the management software that can be utilized as a means of controlling
access to individuals and groups/department for the office.
5. SMART-SECURE OFFICE. The client is requesting a smart security system be part of
the network plan wherein entries to divisions or rooms on the office shall be
monitored by swiping the company issued badge ID. The client is asking bidders to
propose a system and the overall connections of smart equipment should be part of
the network plan. Part of the set-up requires a CCTV system that is integrated and
“native” to switching equipment being purchased for the company. The ip cameras
should be managed by the switches and or router/s purchased for the company.

C. PROJECT COSTING
1. INTERNAL PROJECT COSTING. The owner of you start-up company requires your
group to come-up with a detailed costing of the requirements mentioned in Part 1 A
and B. Make sure that details of the costing involving technical details, count or
number per item and cost to include unit and total cost per item be presented in the
proposal. Make sure also to include implementation labor cost in the proposal. The
labor cost should be rationalized into man-hours and basis of computation should be
explained. Make sure also to include the project duration on project implementation.
2. OVERALL PROJECT BID. Considering all factors including a 30% net profit after all
expenses, propose an overall project bid for the project. Explain all components of
your bid.

PART 2: Project Documentation

The introductory part of your documentation for your project involves the name of your
company and a fictitious profile to support it. Part of this component of the documentation
involves a presentation of team members and their roles on the project. You. May also want
to include other important “fictitious” profiles that will convince any listener to invest on
your company.

The succeeding components of the project should follow the sections of PART 1, A to C and
its sub components. Make sure that all figures, tables and other visual aids presented on are
explained in a discussion on your documentation.

PART 3: Weight, Group Composition, Grading and Distribution of POINTS for the Project

A. OVERALL WEIGHT on TENTATIVE FINAL GRADE(Lab): 40%

B. GROUP COMPOSITION. Each class will have exactly 3 groups. Each group is
composed of AROUND 13-15 members. Your professor will be tasked in forming these
groups. Group composition will be announced after the details of the project is
presented in the 1st meeting of the project duration.

C. Group Grade:
Part 1 A: 30 points
Part 1 B 50 points
Part 1 C: 30 points
Overall Project Documentation: 15 points
Project Presentation and Defense: 10 points
TOTAL: 135 points
D. Individual SCORE/GRADE. Each group member will be given a multiplier score that
will be applied as a multiplier for the group grade that will be issued for this activity.
The individual score of the student is derived using the formula stipulated above.
Group Grade Multiplier
100% - MAXIMUM PARTICIPATION. Student participated according to or even
beyond the role that was given
90% - AVERAGE. Student participated according to role given but output given
just met minimum expectations.
80% - FAIR. Student contributed but output was just fair or mostly did not
contribute to making the project great.
50% - student participated but was not a factor to the overall success of the
project.
0 – student never participated in the project.

E. Monitoring of PARTIAL OUTPUTS. Outputs are being monitored on a daily basis.

Individual outputs play an important role in rationalizing any INDIVIDUAL
MULTIPLIER score issued.

PART 4: Project Duration and Presentation of OUTPUT

PROJECT DURATION. The duration of the TERM PROJECT is 9 hours of actual laboratory
time or 6 days for the short term. This is equivalent to 3 straight weeks (3 hours per week)
during a regular semester. To maximize time, starting July 18, 2023, laboratory classes for
each code, 9306 and 9309 will start from 1:30PM to 4:30PM. This is to make sure the
overnight project times outside the class period will not be factored in for the completion of
the requirement.

PROJECT PRESENTATION. Presentation of output for the project involves a live 15-minute
presentation that will be assigned by your professor. A 45-minute Q&A will follow
thereafter. Make sure to be on your corporate attire during the presentation and defense of
your proposal.

SUBMISSION OF PROJECT DOCUMENTATION: Project documentation should be printed n 3

copies and bounded by a black folder with plastic fastener. This documentation should be
submitted on or before 5PM, July 22, 2023 at the Knowledge Center. Late Projects will be
submitted will already be considered as part of the INC completion activity that will be
scheduled during the 2nd week of classes of the 1st Semester of AY 2023-2024. Moreover, an
outright 20% DEDUCTION WILL BE ISSUED TO THE TOTAL SCORE for any project submitted
beyond the deadline.
