CHAPTER 1: BACKGROUND
1.0: Introduction
This report documents my internship experiences at MDLG, where I
worked in the IT sector in the Planning department from 10 th-6-2024 to
19th-7-2024 . The internship aimed to apply theoretical knowledge in a
practical setting and gain hands-on experience in IT.
1.1: Background of the organization
MDLG is a local government authority responsible for administering
Mbarara District. It’s headquarters are located in Mbarara City.
1.2: Vision/Mission of the organization
Vision: To be a model of excellence in local governance and service
delivery.
Mission: To provide quality services to the people of Mbarara District
through effective governance and collaboration.
1.3: Objectives of the Organization
Improve service Delivery to the community
Enhance transparency and accountability
Promote economic development and growth
1.4: Target Market
The target market includes residents of Mbarara District, businesses
and organizations operating within the district.
1.5: Products/ Services Offered
Public administration and governance
Healthcare services

Infrastructure development
Economic empowerment programs

CHAPTER 2: MANAGEMENT OF THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME
The internship activity was organized by Bishop Stuart
University. The IT section under the planning department at Mbarara
District Local Government hosted me for the internship .
2.0: Organization and it’s role
MDLG is responsible for administering Mbarara District. The IT
section under the planning Department supports the organizations
operations through technologies solutions.
2.1: Duties performed by the Department of placement
Coordinated internship placements for students
Ensured students met university requirements
Monitored student progress and performance
Facilitated communication between students, university and host
organizations
2.2: Status and Role of the immediate supervisor
Mr. Tuhame Cyril , is an Senior IT officer Mbarara City responsible
for overseeing IT operations in the planning department.
He guided me in my tasks, provided feedback and ensured I met the
internship objectives.
2.3: Status and role of the university supervisor
Ms.Nahwera Sarah, Monitored my progress, provided guidance
and evaluated my performance.
2.4: Status and role of the student
Completed assigned tasks and projects.
Attended meetings and trainings.
Submitted reports to both supervisors.
Applied theoretical knowledge in a practical setting.
Gained hands-on experience in IT.

As part of the project to equip the network department with a robust network infrastructure, I
have developed a network layout plan, estimated the required materials and provided a cost

1. Ethernet cables
*Cat 6 Ethernet cable: 600 feet(50 feet per work station and access points)
*Total cost: 44,400 UGX
2. Network switches
*24-port gigabit switch: 1 unit
*Total cost: 740,000 UGX
3. Wall plates and Connectors
*RJ-45 Wall plates: 10 units
*RJ-45 Connectors: 20 units( 2 per wall plate)
*Estimated cost for wall plates:185,000 UGX
*Estimated cost for connectors:74,000 UGX

4. Wireless Access Points
*3 units (one for each room)
*Estimated cost: 555,000 UGX each
*Total cost: 1,665,000 UGX

* cable management tools: cable ties, cable organizers

IMPLEMENTATION PLAN
1.Network cabling:
*Run Ethernet cables from the network switch in Room A to each workstation and wireless
access points.
*Install RJ-45 wall plates and connectors at each workstation location
2. Installation of network hardware:
*Set up the network switch in Room A
*Install wireless access points in optimal locations in each room.
3.Testing:
*Test each network point to ensure connectivity and performance.
This proposal outlines the essential steps and materials required to setup a functional network
in the planning department . Your approval is requested to proceed with the purchace and
implementation .

data consistency and accuracy.

devices , ensuring seamless connectivity and minimizing down time.
3.3: Special personal contribution to MDLG
During my internship at MDLG, I proposed a social media
strategy, which would create and manage official social media accounts
for the district. This initiative would improve transparency providing
timely updates on district activities and projects , it would help promote
local development through showcasing local businesses, tourism and local
heritage.

Presenting complex information to the staff at MDLG
Conducting research and analysis on industry trends and best

o I applied knowledge of company goals and objectives to daily tasks

o I sought feedback and coaching from the supervisor and colleagues
o I took on more projects and responsibilities in the IT department

CHAPTER 4: CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
4.0: Recommendations to the Organization
Invest in IT infrastructure through up grading it to improve network
performance, security and reliability.
Provide regular training and capacity-building programs for IT staff
to enhance their skills and knowledge

Emphasize practical skills development through hands-on projects
and internships
Foster industry partnerships to provide students with opportunities
for internships, mentorships and job placements

In conclusion , my internship at MDLG, has been a valuable learning
experience that has provided me with practical skills, knowledge and
insight into the IT industry. I have successfully applied theoretical
concepts to the real-world scenarios like terminating an Ethernet cable,
demonstrating my ability to analyze problems and implement effective
systems.
