GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:
(1)There are 33 questions in all. All questions are compulsory.
(2) This question paper has five sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, Section D and Section E.
(3) All the sections are compulsory.
(4) Section A contains sixteen questions, twelve MCQ and four assertion reasoning based of
1 mark each, Section B contains five questions of two marks each, Section C contains seven
questions of three marks each, Section D contains two case study-based questions of four
marks each and Section E contains three long answer questions of five marks each.
(5) There is no overall choice. However, an internal choice has been provided in two questions in
Section B, one question in Section C and all three questions in Section E. You have to attempt
only one of the choices in such questions.
(6) Use of calculators is not allowed.
(7) You may use the following values of physical constants where ever necessary.

SECTION A

1. The dimensions of the quantity hν/c, where h is Planck's constant, ν is frequency, and c is the

13. Assertion (A): A number 2.746 rounded off to three significant figures is 2.75, while the
number 2.743 would be 2.74.
Reason (R): In rounding off the uncertain digits, the preceding digit is raised by 1 if the
insignificant digit to be dropped is more than 5 and is left unchanged if the latter
is less than 5.
14. Assertion (A): The average velocity of the object over an interval of time is either smaller
than or equal to the average speed of the object over the same interval.
Reason (R): Velocity is a vector quantity and speed is a scalar quantity.
15. Assertion (A): A body remains at rest even if a number of external forces act on it.
Reason (R): External force acting on a body accelerates the body.

SECTION B

17. By the method of dimensions, test the accuracy of the equation: δ= mgl3/ 4bd3Y where δ is
depression in the middle of a bar of length I, breadth b, depth d, when it is loaded in the middle with
mass m. Y is Young's modulus of material of the bar.
18. A hundred metre sprinter increases her speed from rest uniformly at the rate of 1m/s2 up to
three quarters of the total run and covers the last quarter with uniform speed. How much time
does she take to cover the first half and the second half of the run?
19. Three masses 3,4 and 5 kg are located at the three corners A, B and C respectively of an
equilateral triangle of side 1m. Locate the centre of mass.
20. The angle θ covered by a body in rotational motion is given by the equation,
θ = 6t + 5t2 +2t3. Determine the value of instantaneous angular velocity at time t = 2s.
OR
A metre stick is balanced on a knife edge at its centre. When two coins, each of mass 5g are
put one on top of the other at the 12.0 cm mark, the stick is found to be balanced at 45.0 cm.
What is the mass of the metre stick?
21. The escape velocity on the surface of earth is 11.2 km/s. What will be its value on a planet
having double the radius and eight times the mass of earth?
OR
A mass M is broken into two parts, m and (M – m). How is m related to M so that the
gravitational force between two parts is maximum?

SECTION C

22. A calorie is a unit of heat or energy and is equivalent to 4.2 J where 1J=1kgm2/s2. Suppose we
employ a system of units in which the unit of mass equals α kg, the unit of length equals β m,
the unit of time is γ s. Show that a calorie has a magnitude 4.2 α−1β−2γ2 in terms of the new units.
23. Draw the following graphs for an object projected upward with a velocity v0, which comes back to
the same point after some time.
(a) Acceleration-time graph
(b) Position-time graph
(c) Velocity time graph
24. Determine a unit vector which is perpendicular to both A=2 î + ĵ + k̂ and B= î − ĵ +2 k̂.
25. Two masses of 5 kg and 3 kg are suspended with help of massless inextensible strings as shown in
below figure. Calculate T1 and T2 when whole system is going
upwards with acceleration = 2 m/s2 (use g =9.8 m/s2).

26. State and prove impulse- momentum theorem.
27. An engine draws a train up an incline of 1 in 100 at the rate of
36 km/h. If the resistance due to friction is 5 kg wt per ton,
find out the power of the engine. Mass of train and engine is
100 metric ton.

OR

A particle moves from position r1= (3 î +2 ĵ -6 k̂) m to position r2= (14 î +13 ĵ + 9k̂) m under the
action of a force (4 î + ĵ −3 k̂) N. Calculate the work done.
28. Two particles, each of mass m and speed v, travel in opposite directions along parallel lines
separated by a distance d. Show that the angular momentum vector of the two-particle system
is the same, whatever be the point about which the angular momentum is taken.

SECTION D

29. Potential energy is the energy stored within an object, due to the object’s position, arrangement or
state. Potential energy is one of the two main forms of energy, along with kinetic energy. Potential
energy depends on the force acting on the two objects.
(i) A body is falling freely under the action of gravity alone in vacuum. Which of the
following quantities remain constant during the fall?

(ii) Work done by a conservative force is positive, if:

30. A wooden block of mass 5 kg is placed on a rough inclined plane at 30° to the horizontal. The
coefficient of static friction between the block and the plane is 0.4. A student needs to find
whether the block will slide or stay at rest, and if it moves, with what acceleration.

(i) What is the force acting down the incline due to


gravity?
(ii) A horizontal force of 1.2 kg wt is applied to
a 1.5 kg block resting on a horizontal surface
μ= 0.3. Calculate the acceleration produced in the
block.
(iii) Find the maximum static friction acting on the block.
(iv) If the block moves, what will be the net force acting down the inclined?

SECTION E

31. (a) Derive an equation for the path of a projectile fired parallel to horizontal. (3+2= 5)
(b) Can the walk of a man be an example of the resolution of vectors? Explain.
OR
(a) Prove that for elevations which exceed or fall short of 45o by equal amounts the ranges
are equal?
(b) Derive the equation of motion by using calculus method- v2- u2 = 2as.
32. (a) What are the conditions of glancing collision and head on collision? Show that (3+2= 5)
two identical particles move at right angles to each other after elastic collision in two
dimensions.
(b) Two bodies A and B having masses mA and mB respectively have equal kinetic energies.
If pA and pB be their respective momenta, then prove that the ratio of momenta is equal to
the square root of the ratio of respective masses.
OR
(a) An object of mass 0.4kg moving with a velocity of 4m/s collides with another object of
mass 0.6 kg moving in same direction with a velocity of 2m/s. If the collision is
perfectly inelastic, what is the loss of K.E. due to impact?
(b) Draw a graph showing the variation of potential energy, kinetic energy and the total
energy of a body freely falling on earth from a height h?
33. (a) Show that an artificial satellite circling around the earth in an orbit of radius r (3+2= 5)
obeys Kepler’s third law.
(b) At what distance below the surface of the earth does acceleration due to gravity decrease
by 10%?
OR
(a) A 400 kg satellite in a circular orbit of radius about the earth. Calculate the kinetic energy,
potential energy and total energy of the satellite.
(b) Assuming earth to be a uniform sphere, Find an expression for the density of earth in
terms of g and G.
