Average Speed for Varying Distances

Average Speed = Total Distance / Total Time
When to Use: When different distances are covered at different speeds.

Average Speed for Equal Distances at Different Speeds

Average Speed = (2 × Speed 1 × Speed 2) / (Speed 1 + Speed 2)
When to Use: For a round trip or equal distances at different speeds.

Relative Speed
Same Direction
Relative Speed = Difference of Speeds
Example: Two trains at 80 km/h and 60 km/h → Relative Speed = 80 - 60 = 20 km/h

Opposite Direction
Relative Speed = Sum of Speeds
Example: Two trains at 80 km/h and 60 km/h toward each other → 80 + 60 = 140 km/h

Time to Meet or Overtake

Meeting Time
Time = Distance ÷ Relative Speed
Example: Two cars 300 km apart moving at 50 & 70 km/h → Time = 300 ÷ 120 = 2.5 hours

Overtaking Time
Time = Distance ÷ Relative Speed
Example: Faster car overtaking at 20 m/s vs 15 m/s → Time = 100 ÷ 5 = 20 seconds

Problem 1:
How many minutes does Aditya take to cover a distance of 400 m, if he runs at a speed of 20 km/hr?

Solution:

Speed in km/hr = 20 km/hr

Convert speed to m/s: 20 km/hr = 20 * 1000 / 3600 = 5.56 m/s

Time for 400 m = Distance / Speed = 400 / 5.56 = 71.93 seconds

Time = 1 minute 12 seconds

Problem 2:
A cyclist covers a distance of 750 m in 2 min 30 sec. What is the speed in km/hr of the cyclist?

Solution:

Distance = 750 m

Time = 2 min 30 sec = (2 * 60) + 30 = 150 sec

Speed = Distance / Time = 750 / 150 = 5 m/s

Convert m/s to km/hr: 5 m/s = 5 * (18 / 5) = 18 km/hr

Speed = 18 km/hr

Problem 3:
A person crosses a 600 m long street in 5 minutes. What is speed in km/hr?

Solution:

Distance = 600 m

Time = 5 minutes = 5 * 60 = 300 seconds

Speed = Distance / Time = 600 / 300 = 2 m/s

Convert m/s to km/hr: 2 m/s = 2 * 3.6 = 7.2 km/hr

Speed = 7.2 km/hr

Problem 4:
A car is running at 108 kmph. What distance will it cover in 15 seconds?

Solution:

Speed = 108 km/hr

Convert km/hr to m/s: 108 * 1000 / 3600 = 30 m/s

Distance = Speed * Time = 30 * 15 = 450 m

Distance = 450 meters

Problem 5:
Which of the following trains is the fastest?

a) 25 m/s b) 1500 m/min c) 90 km/hr d) None of these

Solution:

Convert all options to m/s:

a) 25 m/s (no conversion needed)

b) 1500 m/min = 1500 / 60 = 25 m/s

c) 90 km/hr = 90 * 1000 / 3600 = 25 m/s

All speeds are equal: 25 m/s

Answer: None of these (All are the same)

Problem 6:
A and B are two stations 390 km apart. A train starts from A at 10 am and travels towards B at 65 km/hr.
Another train starts from B at 11 am and travels towards A at 35 km/hr. At what time do they meet?

Solution:

Distance = 390 km

Train A: Speed = 65 km/hr, Time = x hours

Train B: Speed = 35 km/hr, Time = (x - 1) hours

Equation: 65x + 35(x - 1) = 390

Solve for x: x = 4.25 hours

So they meet at 10 am + 4 hours 15 minutes = 2:15 pm

Answer: 2:15 pm

Problem 7:
A train M leaves Meerut at 5 am and reaches Delhi at 9 am. Another train leaves Delhi at 7 am and reaches
Meerut at 10:30 am. At what time do the 2 trains cross each other?

Solution:

Train M: Journey = 4 hours, Train D: Journey = 3.5 hours

Assume the total distance = 140 km

Train M speed = 35 km/hr, Train D speed = 40 km/hr

Equation for time: 75x = 220

Solve for x: x = 2 hours 56 minutes

Thus, they meet at 5 am + 2 hours 56 minutes = 7:56 am

Answer: 7:56 am

Problem 8:
A truck covers a distance of 550 meters in 1 minute whereas a bus covers a distance of 33 km in 45
minutes. What is the ratio of their speeds?

Solution:

Truck speed: 550 meters in 1 minute = 550 / 60 = 55/6 m/s

Bus speed: 33 km in 45 minutes = 33 * 60 / (45 * 60) = 44 km/hr = 44 * (5/18) = 110/9 m/s

Ratio of Truck speed to Bus speed: 55 / 6 : 110 / 9 = 3 : 4

Answer: 3 : 4

Problem 9:
A train travels a distance of 1200 meters in 2 minutes. How long will it take to travel 2 km?

Solution:

Speed = 1200 meters / 2 minutes = 600 meters per minute

Time to cover 2 km = 2000 meters / 600 meters per minute = 3.33 minutes

Answer: 3 minutes 20 seconds
