Fifth Semester B.Tech Degree (S,FE) Examination January 2022 (2015 Scheme)
Course Code: CE301
Course Name: DESIGN OF CONCRETE STRUCTURES I
Max. Marks: 100 Duration: 3 Hours
Use of IS 456:2000 is permitted
PART A
Answer any two full questions, each carries 15 marks. Marks
1 a) Distinguish between balanced, under reinforced and over reinforced concrete (5)
sections. Which of these should be recommended in design and why?
b) Determine the working live load the simply supported rectangular beam of width (10)
250 mm and effective depth 450 mm reinforced with 4 Nos. 16mm diameter steel
bars in the tension side can carry. The clear span of the beam is 5.5 m. The beam
is exposed to moderate exposure conditions. Use M25 concrete and Fe415 steel.
2 a) Explain in detail idealized stress-strain curve for steel and concrete. (5)
b) A reinforced concrete beam of rectangular section 300 mm wide and 500 mm (10)
effective depth is reinforced with 5 bars of 20 mm diameter out of which 2 bars
are bent up at an angle 450 near the support section where a factored shear force
of 250 kN is acting. Using M25 grade concrete and Fe415 grade HYSD bars,
design suitable shear reinforcements for the section.
3 a) What are the different forms of shear reinforcement? (3)
b) Define development length and its significance. Derive an expression for (5)
development length.
c) Determine the ultimate moment of resistance of a singly reinforced beam of (7)
width 230 mm and effective depth 450 mm reinforced with 3 bars of 20 mm
diameter. Assume M20 grade concrete and Fe500 grade steel.
PART B
Answer any two full questions, each carries 15 marks.
4 a) Derive expression for moment of resistance of a doubly reinforced rectangular (5)
beam section.
b) A cantilever beam of span 2.5 m from fixed end is supposed to carry a (10)

concentrated load of 15 kN at the free end in addition to its self weight. Design
the beam using M25 concrete and Fe 415 grade steel.
5 a) Discuss the IS code provisions for the design of RC beams subjected to (5)
combined shear and torsion.
b) An isolated simply supported T beam has a flange width of 2400 mm and flange (10)
thickness of 120mm.The span of the beam is 3.6m. The effective depth of the
beam is 580 mm and its width of the web is 300 mm. It is Reinforced with 8
Numbers 20mm diameter bars of 415 grade. Determine the Moment of
Resistance of the section. Use M20 concrete.
6 Design and detail a simply supported RCC slab 4m x 10m. Assume a live load of (15)
4kN/m2. The slab is supported with 230 mm thick walls around. Use M20
concrete and Fe415 grade steel.
PART C
Answer any two full questions, each carries 20 marks.
7 Design an interior panel of a continuous slab system with effective dimensions (20)
4m x 5m subjected to a live load of 4 kN/m2. A floor finishing of 120 mm water
proofing is applied having a unit weight of 18 kN/m3 over the slab. Use M25
concrete and Fe415 steel. Detail the slab with top and bottom plan showing
typical sections.
8 a) Explain long column and short column. (4)
b) Why does the code require all columns to able to resist minimum eccentricity of (2)
loading?
c) Design a circular column of diameter 500 mm and effective length 3 m to carry (14)
an axial load of 3000 kN. Provide helical reinforcement as transverse
reinforcement. Use M30 concrete and Fe415 steel.
9 a) Explain the procedure for estimation of flexural crack width in reinforced (5)
concrete members as per IS456.
b) Sketch the reinforcement details of a straight flight stair supported on landing (5)
slab.
c) Determine the area of longitudinal steel to be provided in a column of size 500 (10)
mm x 700 mm subjected to a axial load of 2500 kN. The unsupported length of
the column is 4.10 m. The column is held in position and restrained against
rotation at both the ends. Use M25 concrete and Fe500 steel.
