Society (STS)

🔹 What is STS?

Science, Technology, and Society (STS) is an interdisciplinary field that explores how science
and technology shape society, and in turn, how society influences the development of science
and technology.

It asks important questions like:

 How does technology affect our daily lives?

 Who benefits from scientific discoveries?
 What are the ethical responsibilities of scientists and engineers?

🔹 Key Concepts in STS

1. Science
o A systematic way of understanding the natural world through observation,
experimentation, and reasoning.
o Example: Understanding gravity or climate change.
2. Technology
o The application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes.
o Example: Smartphones, medical devices, transportation systems.
3. Society
o A group of individuals living together and sharing customs, laws, and institutions.
o Society both shapes and is shaped by science and technology.

🔹 Why STS Matters

 Helps us understand the impact of innovation on culture, politics, environment, and

economy.
 Encourages critical thinking about the role of science and technology in solving social
problems.
 Promotes ethical responsibility in scientific and technological development.
🔹 Real-World Examples

Area Example
Health How vaccines improve public health but also raise ethical debates.
Communicatio How social media affects human interaction and privacy.
n
Environment How technological progress impacts climate change and natural resources.
Education How digital tools are changing the way we learn.

🔹 Conclusion

Science and technology are not isolated from society — they are deeply interconnected. By
studying STS, we learn to ask not just "Can we do this?", but also "Should we?" and "Who
does it affect?"

STS helps us become informed, ethical, and socially responsible citizens in a rapidly changing
world.
