Tutorial Test 1

The document outlines a tutorial test for the EEE3100S course at the University of Cape Town, focusing on per-unit systems in electrical engineering. It includes two questions: the first requires drawing a per-unit circuit diagram and calculating impedances and load current for a single-phase transformer system, while the second involves analyzing a three-phase generator and transmission line system, including drawing a reactance diagram. Essential data such as voltage ratings, reactance values, and load specifications are provided for calculations.

Department of Electrical Eng. Tutorial Test 1 – Per-unit Systems

Question 1
A single line diagram of a single-phase circuit is shown in Figure Q1. The primary-side of the
transformer, T1 (230 V) is connected to the generator and the secondary side, T2 (120 V) is
connected to the load. The system’s data are given below. Using the base values of 3 kVA and
230 V in section 1 of the diagram in Fig. Q1:

i) Draw the per-unit circuit diagram.

ii) Determine the per-unit impedances and source voltage in pu.
iii) Calculate the load current in per unit and in amperes.

Question 2
Figure Q2 shows a one-line diagram of a system in which the three-phase generator is
rated 300 MVA, 20 kV with a sub transient reactance of 0.2 per unit. The transmission line
is 64 km long with a series reactance of 0.5 Ω/km and nominal voltage 230kV. The threephase
transformer T1 is rated 350 MVA, 20/230 kV with a leakage reactance of 0.1 pu.,
Transformer, T2 is rated 300 MVA, 220/13.2 kV with a leakage reactance of 0.1 pu. Two
13.2-kV motors M1 and M2 with sub transient reactance of 0.2 per unit for each motor
represent the load. M1 has a rated input of 200 MVA. M2 has a rated input of 100 MVA.
Choose the generator rating as base in the generator circuit and draw the reactance
diagram showing all reactance in per unit.
