About The course
This course (Sketch 1) is the first course in the free hand sketching that Informs students about
Architectural sketching techniques which shares in developing student’s Visual talent in term
of presenting and building better Architectural idea.
Issues discussed in this course are related to techniques of sketching, Isometric sketching
perspective sketching vegetation’s and etc.., that pay a key role in enabling students to visually
describe physical world around.

Course Objectives and Learning outcome:


– To visually describe the physical world around you.
– To understand what you see.
– To overcome graphic apprehension and build confidence between the acts of seeing,
dreaming and sharing visual ideas through sketches.
– To graphically describe what you see.

– Thomas C. Wang, Pencil Sketching
– Francis D.K Ching, Design Drawing
– Ernest Norling, Perspective Made Easy
– Sketching for Architecture
– Interior Design Stephanis Travis

Course Specific Procedures:


Late assignments: Late assignments will not be accepted unless you make prior arrangements
with the instructor before the due date.
Class participation: Because of the extensive amount of exercise are required to understand
the principals of sketching, there will be in-classroom exercises administered throughout the
term.

Grading
Grades in this course are given as follows:
Quizzes 10%
Attendance & Class Work 25%
Home Works 15%
Mid Term Exam (Field Exam) 20%
Final Project 20%
Final Portfolio 10%

Course Outline:
Schedule, Assignments and Essential skills and Information that will be covered in this course:

Week 1: Introduction to Sketching

– Review of Syllabus.
Lecture:
– Why free hand Sketching?
– Discussion of materials, sketching tools and sketchbook.
Class Work:
– Practicing Paper Layout & Lettering
– Practicing of Lines and 2D Objects
(Vertical lines, Horizontal lines, inclined lines, radiating lines in all directions from a point without rotating the
paper, making curve by drawing number 8 or any curve lines, practicing circle & ellipse of various sizes, draw
shapes, draw form, draw composition 2D, draw composition 3D).
Homework:

– Practicing of Lines and 2D Objects.

Week 2: Introduction to Sighting Techniques


Lecture:
– Introduction to sighting techniques.

Class Work:

Drawing 2D Objects from reference photo.
– Do Sketching of your own classroom objects. (Plan, Section, Elevation & Details).
Homework:

– Do a still life gesture drawing. (Practice what we covered in class.)


– Do Sketching of Your Own Home. (Plan, Section, Elevation & Details)
Week 3: Introduction to Gesture & Contour Sketching
Lecture:
– Introduction to Gesture & Contour Sketching.

Class Work:

Gesture Sketching of hand in different conditions.
– Contour Sketching of hand in different conditions.
Homework:

– Do a still life Gesture Sketching. (Practice what we covered in class.)


– Do Sketching of Your Own Home. (Plan, Section, Elevation & Details)

Week 4: Sketching Oblique 3D projections.

Class Work:
– Oblique sketching from referenced photos.
– Oblique sketching of your classroom.
Homework:

– Do an oblique sketch of your home objects.


– Do an oblique sketch of your home (ROOM).

Week 5: Sketching Isometric 3D projections.

Class Work:
– Isometric sketching from referenced photos.
– Isometric sketching objects in classroom.
Homework:

– Do an isometric sketch of your room.


– Do an isometric sketch of your home (ROOM).

Week 6: Populating sketch & adding vegetation


Class Work:
– Practice adding Human figures.
– Practice adding Vegetation.
Homework:
– Practice Vegetation and Human figures.

Week 7: Practicing additional Environment

Class Work:
– Practice adding Flooring.
– Practice adding Sky and Background.
Homework:
– Practice Sky, Background and Flooring.

Week 8: Practicing Populating sketch Cont. (Field Sketch)

Class Work:
– Sketching from referenced photos.
– Sketching Engineering Faculty building front view.
Homework:
– Do a sketch of your living environment.

Week 9: Mid-Term Exam (Field sketch)

– 20% exam
– Review of past Lessons

Week 10: Introduction to perspective, Basic principles of linear perspective

Class Work:
– Draw one-point perspective of your classroom.
– Draw faculty rear Entrance (one-point perspective & Sighting techniques)
Homework:

– Draw a one-point perspective view of your living environment using only sighting to
discover angles, rates of convergence, and proportional relationships.
– Draw Saeed Jamal Uddin Tomb in one-point perspective

WEEK 11: Linear Perspective Cont. (Field Sketch)


Class Work:
– Draw Eng. faculty (Exterior of Auditorium)
– Draw a one-point perspective of Chinese Faculty Interior.
Home work:
– Draw one-point perspective from referenced photos

Week 12: Two-Point Perspective Intro.


Class Work:
– Draw a Two-point perspective of your class room.
– Draw faculty Auditorium from exterior (Two-point perspective & Sighting techniques)
Homework:

– Draw a two-point perspective view of your living environment using only sighting to
discover angles, rates of convergence, and proportional relationships.
– Draw Saeed Jamal Uddin Tomb in two-point perspective

WEEK 13: Two-point Perspective cont. (Field Sketch)


Field Work:
– Draw a Two-point perspective of Turkish Faculty.
– Draw a Two-point perspective of Student Affairs.
Home work:
– Draw Two-point perspective from referenced photos.

Week 14: Review of Perspective sketching


Class Work:
– Draw from referenced photos.
Homework:

– Graphically describe the process of sketching one-point and two-point perspective

Week 15: Poster Arrangement and Design & Project Selecting


– Guides on how to design posters
– Researching drawings for final Project and Discussion about Final Project Scope.

Week 16: Final Project

– Portfolio & Poster arrangement check


– Final Exam / Project
