Introduction To Oceanography

Oceanography is the scientific study of the ocean and seas, encompassing various disciplines such as physics, chemistry, geology, and biology. Its origins trace back to early explorers and significant expeditions like HMS Beagle and HMS Challenger, which laid the groundwork for modern oceanography. The field is divided into branches including biological, physical, geological, and chemical oceanography, all aimed at understanding marine ecosystems and processes.

INTRODUCTION TO OCEANOGRAPHY

I. Introduction:
Oceanography is a branch of science that studies the
ocean and the seas; such as the processes that occur in
They. This science is related to different disciplines.
like physics, chemistry, geology, meteorology and the
biology; in order to understand the processes that occur.
It covers many aspects such as ocean currents, waves,
the tides and other geophysical movements of fluids, the
marine organisms, dynamic ecosystems, tectonics of
plates and the geology of the seabed, as well as the
exchange flows of various chemical substances between the
ocean and the systems that limit it.
II. Development:
The origin of oceanography goes back through the
explorations in the ocean, that's why it is said that the
the first explorers had the ability to map their
navigation trajectories. Men in prehistory
they made different types of instruments such as hooks and
networks made of bones, boats made of wood, skin and
branches; etc. They navigated only with the knowledge of the
winds, waves, currents, and some patterns.
The word oceanography was coined for the first time in
France in the year 1584. It does not return to German until the year 1880.
like Oceanography. The scientific exploration of the world of
the oceans and the seabed began with the expedition of
HMS Beagle which set sail from England in the year 1831, on board of
which traveled the naturalist Charles Darwin, and continued with the
expedition aboard the British ship HMS Challenger between
1872 and 1876. The report made by the Challenger is part of
of the foundations of modern oceanography.
Oceanography as a science can be divided into branches such as:
Biological Oceanography that studies all organisms
mariners and their relationship with the environment; Oceanography
physics, studies the physical processes that occur in the sea such as
the currents, the tides, and the waves; geological oceanography,
studies the geological processes that affect the oceans and for
finally, chemical oceanography that studies the composition
chemistry of seawater.
The main objective of this science is to investigate about the
characteristics of seas and oceans, as well as of the animals
and existing materials.

conclusions
As we know, this science is important because it provides us
knowledge to study marine ecosystems, alterations
that occur in the oceans, study that ocean currents,
chemical composition of water and more.
