CTE 241: Introduction to Microprocessors & Assembly Language


Assignment Task 1
1. Draw in an A4 sheet of paper, a neatly labeled block diagram of the Intel 8085 microprocessor
showing its internal architecture, which consists of three main units: the Processing Unit, the
Instruction Unit, and the Storage and Interface Unit. The Processing Unit includes the Arithmetic
Logic Unit (ALU), accumulator, and flag registers. The Instruction Unit contains the instruction
register and decoder. The Storage and Interface Unit includes registers, the program counter, stack
pointer, and address/data latches.
2. Describe briefly each component of the Intel 8085 microprocessor that you have drawn in question
one (1) above.

Weekly Assignments

Week 1: Introduction to Microprocessors


3. Assignment: Write a 1-page essay defining microprocessors and their roles in computer systems.
Include examples of different microprocessors in use today.

Week 2: Microprogramming
4. Assignment: Create a diagram illustrating the microprogramming process. Accompany the diagram
with a brief explanation (200 words) of why microprogramming is important in modern processors.
Week 3: Instruction Sets
5. Assignment: Compile a list of at least 10 instructions from a specific microprocessor's instruction set
(e.g., x86). For each instruction, provide a brief description of its function and usage.

Note
In this task you are required to complete questions one (1) and two (2) neatly, with brief and concise
explanation of the components, as well as submit on or before Friday 10th July, 2025, 2PM-prompt.
Finally, you are to also complete question 3, 4 and 5 by adhering strictly to the provided instruction in each
question. These must be submitted on or before Wednesday 16th July, 2025, 2PM-prompt.
All assignments must be hand written in foolscap sheets and diagrams-A4 sheets.
You will be provided with a block diagram of the Intel 8085 Microprocessor, download and make use of it.
