CEC366 UNIT1 Image Processing ImageSensing

Image sensing and acquisition is the initial phase of digital image processing, involving the use of sensors like CCD or CMOS to capture light and convert it into a digital format. The process includes focusing a scene onto a sensor array, generating an analog signal, converting it to digital via an ADC, and storing the image for further processing. The quality of image acquisition is crucial as it impacts all subsequent processing steps.

CEC366 – Image Processing

UNIT I: DIGITAL IMAGE FUNDAMENTALS

4. Image Sensing and Acquisition

Image sensing and acquisition is the first step in digital image processing.

It involves capturing an image using a physical device (sensor) and converting it into a
digital format.

🟠 Image Sensing:

- Uses sensors (e.g., CCD or CMOS) to detect and measure light reflected from objects.

- Each sensor element corresponds to a pixel in the digital image.

- Sensors are arranged in a 2D array to capture spatial data.

🟠 Image Acquisition Process:

1. The scene is focused onto a sensor array using a lens system.

2. The sensor detects light intensity and generates an analog electrical signal.

3. An Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) converts this signal into digital form.

4. The resulting digital image is stored for processing.

🟠 Key Components:

- Optical system (lens)

- Sensor array (CCD/CMOS)

- Signal conditioning circuit

- Analog to Digital Converter (ADC)

- Storage or processing unit

The quality of image acquisition affects all downstream processing steps.
