Lesson
Nail Structure and
1 Growth
The main structure that you will work with when applying a manicure is the
nail. It is a transparent plate that protects the tip of fingers, toes and the nail bed. It
is an appendage of the skin.

Can you think of a reason why you need to understand the structure and
growth of the nail?

Before moving on, please answer honestly the activity based on your prior
knowledge. It is a requirement of your participation but your score will not be
recorded. Simply have fun answering.

Arrange the jumbled words inside the parenthesis to form a word about the
nail. Do this on your answer sheet.

1. (geadappen) ________________
2. (luticce) ________________
3. (traxmi) ________________
4. (natrike) ________________
5. (loychoongy) ________________

Knowledge of the nail structure will enable you to identify the condition of the
nail. You will need to identify whether a nail is healthy or unhealthy. You will also
need to know which parts of the nail are responsible for growth, protection, nail
shape and size. This knowledge would enable you to prevent damage to the nail
during hand spa treatment and manicure application.

Let Us Study

Analysis of the Nail

A manicurist needs to have knowledge of the different parts of the nail for this
will be the basis in giving nail care services to the clients. The nail is an appendage
of the skin. It is a horny, translucent plate that protects the tips of the fingers and
toes. It is composed mainly of keratin, a protein substance that forms the base of all
horny tissue.

The nail is white and translucent in appearance and allows the pinkish color
of the nail bed to be seen. The horny plate contains no nerves or blood vessels.

3
Onyx is the technical term for the nail. The condition of the nail, like that of
the skin, reflects the general health of the body.
Onychology is the study of the nail. The nails vary in thickness, being
heaviest on the thumbs and big toes. The characteristics of healthy nails are firm
and flexible, slightly pink and the surface is smooth, curved and unspotted, without
any hollows or wavy ridges.
NAIL STRUCTURE
If you ask clients to show you their nails, they will probably show you the nail
plate. However, as you can see in Figure 1, the nail plate is only one of the many
parts that make up the nail. Each part has a specific function that contributes to the
normal growth, health and appearance of the nail.

Figure 1 – Structure of the Nail

Figure 2 – Cross-section of the Nail

4
Parts of the nail:

Free edge The area of the nail plate extends over the finger.

Nail plate The visible portion of the nail is attached to the nail bed.

Nail fold Folds of normal skin surround the natural nail plate.

Nail Wall Folds of skin overlap the sides of the nail. It holds the nail
in place and protects the edges of the nail plate.

Lunula The whitish, half-moon shape at the base of the nail. It can
best be seen in the thumb.

Cuticle Dead, colorless tissue attached to the natural nail plate.

Eponychium Living skin at the base of the natural nail plate that covers
the matrix area.

Hyponychium The area between the nail plate and the fingertip.

Nail grooves Tracks on which the nail grows.

Nail bed The skin upon which the nail plate rests.

Matrix Situated directly below the cuticle. Its main function is to

produce cells that become the nail plate. If the matrix is
damaged the nail will become deformed.

Mantle The deep fold of the skin in which the nail root is embedded.

Nail Growth
Nails are constantly growing, but their growth rate slows down due to poor
circulation and aging. Fingernails grow faster than toenails, at a rate of 3 millimeters
per month. It takes six months for a fingernail to grow from the root to the free edge.
Toenails grow much more slowly, at just 1 millimeter per month. It takes a toenail
12 to 18 months to grow from root to tip.
Some factors can influence the growth of nails such as nutrition, general
health and disease. A nail grows forward, starting at the matrix and extending over
the tip of the finger. Like hair, nails grow faster in warm weather. Adult’s nail growth
is about 1/8 inch per month whereas the nails of children grow faster than those of
the elderly. Toenails grow slowly but they are thicker and harder than fingernails.
To provide professional and quality nail care services to the client, it is
important to understand the basic structure of the nail. In addition, it enables you
to proficiently clean, beautify and strengthen your nail.

Let Us Study

Nail diseases are conditions of both the nail and the surrounding skin which
result from bacterial, fungal and viral infections. Some conditions will show green,
yellow or black discoloration of the nail, depending on the nature of the infection. The
main cause of infection is through damaged cuticles and broken skin.
Many disorders can affect the nails. These disorders can affect any portion of
the nail unit and can impact the appearance of the nail plate itself.
Let's go over what we learned in the previous lesson. What are your answers
to the following questions? This is only a part of the review, so don't worry. Although
your score will not be recorded, you must complete this task as part of your
participation.
1. What structure is made from the appendage of the skin?
2. Enumerate the parts of the nail.
3. How does the nail grow?
4. Why is it important to understand the structure of the nail?
When you are examining the hands and nails there are six signs of infection
to look for; pain, swelling, redness, local fever, throbbing, and pus.
If any of these signs are present, you cannot perform services, but instead,
refer that person to a physician.

Let Us Study

As a manicurist, it is very essential to be aware of the different tools, supplies

and equipment to be used in giving hand spa treatment. This treatment can be an
added service in a manicure or a separate treatment given at home or in the salon.

Let's review everything we learned in the previous lesson. How would you
respond to the following questions? Don't worry, this is simply part of the review.
You must complete this exercise as part of your participation, even if your score will
not be recorded.
1. Do you remember seeing any nail diseases or nail disorders on someone?
2. What did you think was wrong?
3. Do you think nail disorders can be treated?
4. Would you work on a client’s nails if they showed signs of nail disorders?
5. Can you give the tools, materials, and equipment used in giving hand care
treatment?
In a performing hand spa, it is important to prepare all the necessary tools,
supplies and equipment to be used before the treatment to save time and to set
everything in order.

HAND SPA TOOLS, SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT

The following supplies/materials are cosmetics that are consumed and replaced
from time to time. They are also called consumables.

Alcohol is an organic compound used as a sanitizer.

Antiseptic is an agent that reduces or prevents the

multiplication of microorganisms.

Body Scrub is a mixture of natural ingredients to keep feet

soft, smooth and moisturized and to remove dead skin
cells.

20
Cling Wrap is a thin plastic film used for sealing the
paraffin during a hand spa.

First Aid Kit is a collection of supplies for use in giving first

aid.

The lotion is used to soften and moisturize the skin.

Mittens are slips over plastic liners to increase heat

retention when used with paraffin.

Paraffin wax is a mineral wax derived from petroleum. It is

a soft wax that melts at a temperature cool enough to safely
immerse your skin. Paraffin wax is used as a treatment in
spas and salons to lock in moisture.

Soap is used for cleansing.

21
Tools referred to as implements that are durable, permanent and are hand-held.

Plastic Basin is used for soaking hands and holding soapy

water.

Equipment are the items that are more or less durable and permanent, needed for
a particular activity or purpose.

The paraffin wax machine contains a heat source and a

tank that holds paraffin wax. The machine melts the wax
and maintains it in a liquid state.

Hand Spa Machine is an electronic gadget used to soothe

the pain of arthritis, muscle spasms, and dry cracked
skin of the hands.

A trolley is a movable cart that contains supplies and

materials.

27
Let Us Study
Our hands are as dominant as our faces. People will notice them, just as
they will see our faces. They are, nevertheless, exposed to everyday stress and age
rapidly.
Before you do hand spa treatment, you should have a basic understanding of
how to perform basic hand massage or hand and arm massage techniques, as these
are also included in the processes.
Let's go over what we learned in the previous lesson. What are your thoughts
on the following questions? Don't worry, it's just a part of the process. Even if your
score will not be recorded, you must complete this exercise as part of your
participation.
1. Can you still remember the tool, supplies/materials and equipment for a hand
spa treatment? What are those?
2. Have you ever visited a spa and experienced hand treatment? What are the tools
and equipment they are using?
3. Can you perform hand spa treatment at home?
4. What is included in the treatment that makes you feel relax and helps ease
muscle pain?
Getting used to the new normal and working from home is difficult. Stress and
aging are common in our hands. They are equally vital because we use them every
day. Although fully functional hands can accomplish great things, they are
susceptible to a variety of illnesses.
To keep our hands from drying and protect them from possible injuries, a
hand massage and exercises are typically recommended.

Define Massage
Massage is a systematic manipulation of soft tissues of the body for relaxation
or therapeutic purposes.
Hand massage is carried out after cuticle work and before nail polish
application. Hand massage has the following effects:
➢ moisturizes the skin
➢ increases blood circulation
➢ keeps a range of movement in the joints
➢ eases discomfort feeling
➢ induces relaxation
➢ removes dead cells (desquamation)
➢ Headache relief
➢ Mood rejuvenation
➢ Relief from depression and anxiety

28
Classification of
Description of movement
massage movement
Effleurage A slow, stroking movement that induces relaxation. It is
applied to begin and complete a massage. It is also applied
during massage between more vigorous movements.
Another term is gliding.
Petrissage It is a compression movement or kneading movement,
which exerts pressure on the muscle. It is applied to
contracted muscles to relax them. Petrissage also breaks
down fatty deposits and tones muscles. Another term is
kneading.
Tapotement A percussion-type movement is usually applied as a series
of brief, brisk movements. It stimulates blood and lymph
flow. Another term is percussion.
Frictions Frictions are small circular movements of the thumb or
finger pads, which are used to push muscles against the
bone, thereby breaking up nodules or adhesions present in
the tissues. The movements are directed at the underlying
tissues and as such the circles made do not move over the
surface of the skin but create their movement beneath the
skin. Another term is rubbing.
Vibration It is a rapid shaking, quivering, trembling or rocking
movement applied with the fingertips or full hand. Another
term is shaking.

Basic Hand and Arm Massage Techniques

The hands contain many acupressure and reflexology points that are
associated with the organs and certain parts of the body. Therefore hand massage
should be included with each hand spa treatment and manicure because it provides
significant health benefits such as reduced pain, improved finger and wrist range of
motion.

Procedure for Basic Hand and Arm Massage1

1. Apply effleurage to the hand and

forearm using long, sweeping strokes from
the hand to the elbow; anterior and
posterior sides. Repeat five times.

29
2. Apply frictions to the back of the hand
and forearm using both thumbs. Repeat
two times.

3. Knead the palms of the hand as in step 2.

Repeat two times.

4. Rotate fingers while giving support to

the joints. Move from little finger to thumb.
Rotate clockwise and then anti clockwise.
Repeat four times on each finger.

5. Rotate the wrist by placing your fingers

between the client’s fingers while
supporting client’s wrist with your other
hand. Rotate the wrist, first clockwise then
anticlockwise. Repeat two times.

30
6. Apply effleurage as in step one. Repeat
five times.

Contraindications to Massage

Massage should be avoided in the following circumstances:

➢ over very hairy areas

➢ over recent wounds and scars
➢ over bacterial inflammation
➢ over internal inflammation, such as an arthritic ‘flare-up’
➢ over varicose veins.
One of the relaxing parts of a hand spa is massage. After you familiarize
yourself with the basic steps in hand and arm massage, let us find out if you can
apply what you have learned in massage by doing the series of activities ahead of
you.
