Essay On Caravaggesque
Artemisia Gentileschi and her art are finally receiving deserved scholarly attention. While much
remains to be written about her, a great deal has been done to clarify her oeuvre since Roberto
Longhi s pioneering efforts in 1916. Some of the underlying assumptions that guided Longhi in his
evaluation of Artemisia Gentileschiand his attempt to set forth an oeuvre for her still dominate our
thinking about her art. Primary among them is Artemisia s role as a caravaggesca, that is, her place
as a follower of Caravaggio. In fact, initial viewing and evaluations of her work were done in the
context of Caravaggio: before 1991, her work was seen almost exclusively in exhibitions devoted to
assessing Caravaggio s influence and in surveys of his followers.
Caravaggio was a revolutionary artist who used nature as the primary model in his paintings by
recording the imperfections of the physical world and its inhabitants. Caravaggio s influence is
credited with luring other artists to follow him in his use of darkened grounds and the substitution of
the commonplace for more nobly conceived figures in idealized settings. The term caravaggesque,
however, encompasses a range of qualities, including the recreation of tactile surfaces, the use of
focused light sources that penetrate darkened interiors to bring isolated figures and objects into
raised relief, the practice of designing and then painting compositions directly onto the canvas
without preparatory drawings, and the
Women s Oppression Of Women
The oppression of women is best described as a steel cage, crafted over the centuries by the hands
of patriarchal powers, enslaving flightless and chirp less birds. Birds may be benevolent and
gentle, yet they embody a power most ferocious amongst all creatures. Though, it is of no
fascination as to why women, in being similar to birds, transform from powerful peoples to frail
figures. The molestation of power from these birds is done by the hindering cage encompassing
them. The thick bars of oppression slice the wings of the benevolent beings, strip the voice of the
once vociferous, and above all destroy the benign life of the feminine. These feminine figures have
the potential to provide light when light is dark, fly the silky sky, and, of utmost importance, break
free from the shackles that bear them down. Yet, only a few women have been notably brave to do
so, and thus have confronted the powerful patriarchal powers that serve to enslave them and earned
the titles of feminists. Feminismis an evolving philosophy which serves to destroy the intellectual
paradigm that women are subservient to males by nature. Yet, although feminism is essentially a
product of the contemporary world, many figures in history have demonstrated pre feminist ethics of
which has given birth to the philosophies of modern feminism. Sophocles Antigone, although
fictional, presents an anecdotal example of a prominent proto feminist figure, the protagonist
Antigone. The work is set in Ancient
Using Performance Enhancing Drugs For Athletes
Title Performance enhancing drugs are not beneficial for athletes because of legal issues and
suspensions, a possibility for an athlete to end their career and ruin their reputation, and long term
health risks.
Athletes that use P.E.D s to improve their performance in the sport that they are involved in can
get in a lot of legal trouble for using illegal drugs and could get suspended for their sport. Bob
Jacobson states in his article Major League Baseball players suspended for using performance
enhancing drugs, April 2005 July 2007 that, In 2005 there were 12 different baseball players that
all got suspended for using PED s. All 12 suspensions were all during the baseball season (n. pag.).

Mother Son Conflict In The Odyssey
There is a common theme in Greek Mythology of children fighting with, overthrowing, and often
killing their parents. Zeus kills his father Cronus to rise to power as the king of the Olympian gods.
Prior to this, Cronus had killed his own father, Uranus, which lead to the rise of the Titans.
Perhaps you re confused. No one kills their parents in the books we read in class, you re probably
thinking. In this, you are correct. However, Telemachus relationship with his mother Penelope still
fits some aspects of this trope of struggling in the assumption of power from his parents. His murder
of the maids at his father s command is influenced by his attempting to prevail in this mother son
conflict.
In order to present this concept in my media project, I created a comic detailing Telemachus
hypothetical thought process, the people and statements I d imagine were passing through his mind
the moment before he murdered the maids. In doing so, I can justify my thesis. Sections from the
comic and the quotations that go along with them will appear on the screen behind me as I provide
literary analysis, and at the end I ll show the comic in full.
To begin, in order to prove the murders were influenced by the conflict, it must first be proven that
there is a conflict. Shortly after the introductory section of the Odyssey, we see Telemachus telling
his mother to go back to her quarters and tend to her distaff and loom . Then, he reminds her he
holds the reins of power in their house.
American Dream Equality
The outcome of the American Dream had first come well known when James Truslow Adams
stated, life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according
to ability or achievement (McQuade), without the weight of a different social class or the
circumstances of birth resulting in a part of the decision. His meaning was based around the
thoughts on Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness that was first seen in the Declaration of
Independence; which proclaims, all mean are created equal (McQuade). Today s society looks at the
American Dreamin different lights, to some it may be becoming very wealthy and to others being
happy with the life they were given; consequently, all of the different views towards... Show more

Organizations, such as: Black Lives Matter, National Organizations for Women (NOW), International
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex Association (ILGA), and American Civil Liberties
Union (ACLU) are doing anything and everything in their power to ensure American citizens are
given the rights they are promised and respectfully deserve. For example, the American Civil
Liberties Union has been our nation s guardian of liberty, working in courts, legislatures, and
communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties that the Constitution and the
laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this country (ACLU). These organizations are
generating the sense of hope the American Dream is still achievable with hard work and dedication.
Despite our ever changing society, our infrastructure of the American Dream is still strong. We, as a
nation, have marginally veered away from the original ideals of the American Dream; nevertheless,
the American Dream is still achievable for any American willing to work for
What Are The Strengths And Weaknesses Of Coca Cola
Coca Cola is an extremely recognizable company. Popularity is one of its superior strengths that is
virtually incomparable. Coca Cola is known very well worldwide. It s branding is obvious and
easily recognized. Things like, logos and promos shown on t shirts, hats, and collectible
memorabilia. Without a doubt, no beverage company compares to Coca Colas social popularity
status. Some people buy coke, not only because of its taste, but because it is widely accepted and
they feel like they are part of something so big and unifying. At the other end of the spectrum, certain
individuals choose not to drinkcoke, based solely on rebelling from the world s idea that coke is
something of such great power. Overwhelming is the best word to describe... Show more content on

However they do have a variety of weaknesses that need to be addressed if they want to rise to the
next level. Word of mouth is probably a strength and weakness of every company. While many
people have good things to say, there are many individuals who are against Coca Cola as a
company, and the products in which they produce. Word of mouth unfortunately is something
that is very hard to control. While people will have their opinions, you have to try to sway their
negative views. If bad comments and views are put out to people who have yet to try Coca Cola
products, then that could produce a lost customer which shows why word of mouth is a
weakness. Another aspect that could be viewed as a weakness is the lack of popularity of many
of Coca Cola s drinks. Many drinks that they produce are extremely popular such as Coke and
Sprite but this company has approximately 400 different drink types. Most are unknown and
rarely seen for available purchase. These drinks do not probably taste bad, but are rather a result of
low profile or non existent advertising. This is a weakness that needs to be looked at when
analyzing their company. Another weakness that has been greatly publicized is the health issues that
surround some of their products. It is known that a popular product like coke is not very beneficial
to your body and your health. With today s constant shift to health products, some products could
possibly loose
Advantages And Disadvantages Of Genetically Modified Crops
Is the production of Genetically Modified (GM) foods a solution to the food crisis or a disaster in
the making? Genetically modified crops are crops that are created using genetic engineering
methods i.e. the manipulation of genes in plants and crops to obtain a new generation of crops
that have the most desirable traits. The genetic modification of crops comes with both
advantages and disadvantages. The advantages being: 1) Crops are more productive and can
produce higher yields than normal crops as they are disease and virus resistant. 2) GM crops can
be freeze tolerant and drought resistant. This allows for plants and crops to grow and survive in
harsh environments where normal crops wouldn t be able to grow such as stone tomatoes and
bush beans which are drought resistant and some potato and tobacco plants which contain a cold
tolerance anti freeze gene from a cold water fish and can help the plant to survive in extremely
cold, frosty conditions. 3) GM crops are pest resistant and herbicide resistant (farmers can use
weed killers to kill weeds surrounding the GM crops and this will not kill the GM crop thus also
increasing the yield of the crops). 4) The higher yields due to the crops being disease, virus, drought,
pest and herbicide resistant decreases the demand for the crops (increased availability) which in turn

This labelling requirement is further imposed and highlighted under the Consumer Protection Act.
This act states that if food products have a GM content of at least 5% it must indicate contains GMO

Migrant Workers Argumentative Essay
It seems reasonable that the people of today do not want to spend their time, toiling away in fields,
picking fruits and vegetables in the hot sun. But some people do. Not because they want to, but that
their alternatives are not much better. To them, this is an opportunity, not a loss. For the many
migrant workers that work in agricultural jobs, the act of migration and the laws surrounding them
can be a burden. The prohibitive regulations surrounding migrant workers are a problem, since
without the supply of migrant workers, agricultural products might become more expensive, or
decrease in production. A reasonable solution to this problem would be to change the regulation to
allow for better access to agricultural work in america. A loss... Show more content on

These reforms may send the message that more migrants are welcome, which could result in
more migrant labor becoming available. An increase in immediate labor force might cost the
farms a bit more, but many large corporate farms would be able to afford the cost, and it would
mean that the crops would be picked quicker, resulting in less time spent for employees on the
field, and henceforth less money spent per employee. However, the number of those willing to
work on farms may end up decreasing. If the AFBF plan were put in effect, a number of long
terms employees would gain citizenship, and might chose to work elsewhere for more money.
The average farm worker makes about $30,000 dollars a year, which does not include the fees
they may have to pay either to legitimate or non legitimate receivers. The average pay in california
is $60,000 dollars, and it would be more achievable to get a job with that pay if a person had legal
status (La Times). The AFBF reforms would benefit the workers with job security and a path to
citizenship. Having a contract would provide stability for both parties, in that the farm knows it will
have a certain amount of employees, and the employees know that they have a job. A contract would
mean the something substantial would have to happen for the employee to lose their job, not just a
whim of the employer. The access to permanent

WEAKNESS1 * Relatively weak Research and Development * Lower Margins compared to
Competitors * Significant exposure to declining PC market Dell s research and development
wing is relatively poor in developing new products or in investment for research purposes.
According to Data Monitor report Dell has relatively weak research, development and
engineering (R amp;D) capabilities compared to its major competitors. The company s R amp;D
spending has been lower than its competitors. Dell s R amp;D expenses were $661 million, $624
million respectively, during financial year 2011 and financial year 2010. By contrast, its main
competitors such as HP reported R amp;D spending of $3,000 million and $2,800 million in
financial year 2010 and 2009; and IBM reported R amp;D spending of $6,026 million and $5,820
million, respectively, in financial year 2010 and 2009. Furthermore, the company s R amp;D
spending as percentage of total revenues was 1.1% in financial year 2010, compared to HP (2.4%),
and IBM (6%) (Data Monitor report). These numbers shows that Dell is lacking inputting impetus to
its R amp;D wing which may impact its growth in highly competitive, rapidly changing and dynamic
technology market. As a result Dell has significantly less number of patents than it competitor like
HP and IBM. At the end of financial year 2011,
Essay On Splitup Function
This splitup function helps in coming out of the problem associated with DBSCAN as it aims to
partition highly uniform datasets, which may be incorrectly identified as a single cluster if
DBSCAN is called with a reasonable large s reachability value (Usually the density based algorithm
forms relatively less clusters based on the density even when there is a need to further divide the
clusters). This splitup function is also useful for some datasets that present specific challenges for
the density based algorithm such as those with large discrepancies in density. When there is a
situation which leads into a dilemma in which clusters to split, this function takes the strength of the
cluster as well as the distance between the new clusters... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The initial centroid for the top cluster is the data point far away from the original cluster s
centroid. To find the initial location of the centroid of the bottom cluster, we draw a vector starting
at the original cluster s centroid and ending at the top cluster s centroid. This vector is then set to
point in the opposite direction of the top centroid. The endpoint of this mirrored vector is used as
the initial centroid for the bottom cluster. This entire process of splitting the cluster results in the
initial centroids for top and bottom being as far away from each other as possible. Figure 3. A
pseudocode of the mirroring function used in the weighted split function of our CluDataSE. The
complete dataset points of the original cluster are then assigned to either the top or bottom clusters,
depending on which centroid is closer. Once all the data points have been assigned to some cluster,
the top and bottom clusters are then checked to have at least minimum points of data points. If either
the top or the bottom cluster contains less than minimum points of data points, then the split is
considered invalid. In this case, the original cluster remains the same without further classification,
and, the top and bottom clusters formed using splitup function are discarded. If a split has occurred,
the two new clusters, top and bottom are stored in a list of new
Why Did Ancient Art Man Use Animals To Depict Their Deities
I have a few theories as to why ancient man used animals to depict their deities. First I ll start with
Prehistoric Art. As far back as 30,000 B.C.E. man created pictures of nature. From paintings on
cave walls to sculptures carved of rock from within the cave, prehistoric man paid tribute by
creating art in the form of animals such as bulls, bison, horses, bears, and even felines. To these
people these animals were a life source. Not only as food but for warmth, weapons and tools. By
worshipping these creatures with art man believed they were showing gratitude therefore ensuring
more animals would come. As seen with the Wounded Bison at the Cave of Altamira in Northern
Spain, these bison were painted on the cave ceiling. Man noticed the bulges in the rock and chose to
paint the creature it resembles most even though it may have been difficult to reach. As though it
was a calling of a higher power, man would build scaffoldings against the walls to allow themselves
better access to their canvas. With the Egyptians their... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With these visual representations for their gods and Pharaohs it s easy to believe that the people
of Egypt lived in fear. For breaking Pharaohs laws would enact the wrath of the gods bringing
famine, floods, or drought. In this picture of the Palette of King Narmer, the Pharaoh is depicted
as larger than the other people in the relief. This size difference was to establish the authority and
power of the king. On one side of the Palette, King Narmer holds a fallen enemy by the hair, as he
raises his mace an emblem of kingship with the other hand. On the other side of the Palette, Narmer
appears in the highest register now wearing the red crown of Lower Egypt. (Janson s
Questions For The Group Discussion
Two Questions for the group discussion:
Inside a church, a pastor has flipped a verse of the bible to accommodate polygamy. Consulted by a
business millionaire, the pastor ransacked the bible and finally arrived at a verse to support the holy
matrimony. Quoting Isaiah 4:1 the pastor joined the notable influential member with three women .
Does the text Isaiah 4:1 justify the polygamous wedding?

During the discussion, which follows the presentation, the group was amazed at the shocking photo
of a man franked with three women in their weeding attires. The scenario in a sociological
dimension prompted the geographical background where the wedding could have happened. It is
assumed that most Christian communities view polygamy as an abominable act, which presumably
does not conform with most biblical canons. For some geographical areas, it is illegal and
punishable by law, particularly in western society; yet it is acceptable in some countries and
shockingly among faith communities.
The expression that the Pastor flipped a verse of the Bible to accommodate polygamy , could be
inferred that the pastor was either desperate for the man s money or that he was afraid of losing
his membership in his church; and so, he was ready to do anything to keep his buoyant church
member. However, for charity sake, we do not know the bigger picture of what really happened or
what might have moved the pastor to succumb to the risky demand. Sociologically his society allows
it otherwise
