Critique Of John Mitchell Finnis s Natural Law Theory
John Mitchell Finnis is an Australian legal scholar and philosopher specialized in philosophy of
law. He was the professor of law at University College, Oxford. John Finnis has written Natural
Law and Natural Rights in 1980, basically a restatement of Natural law theory. John Finnis work
is an explication and application of Aquinas view, an application to ethical question, but with
special attention to the problems of social theory in general. Primary question in the legal theory
of the Finnis was divided into ethical questions and meta ethical questions. The ethical question
is How should one live? , and the meta ethical question is How can we discover the answer to
ethical questions? Finnis response to these basic questions involves the claim that there are a
number of separate but equally valuable goods known as basic goods. In his book Natural Law
and Natural Right he listed the following seven items as basic goods Life and health, Knowledge,
Play, Aesthetic experience, Sociability or friendship, Practical reasonableness and religion. These
are basic goods in the sense that one can value them for its own sake. While... Show more content on

Finnis argues that there are, a set of notions that indicate the basic forms of human flourishing as
goods to be pursued and realized and that are known to everyone who thinks about how they should
act. These principles are buttressed by a set of basic methodological requirements of practical
reasonableness, which distinguish sound from unsound practical thinking and provide the criteria
for distinguishing between reasonable and unreasonable acts. Following these methodological
requirements allows one to distinguish between acting morally right or morally wrong and to
formulate a set of general moral

The Myth Of The Amazons And The Great Story Of Hercules
Hearing, seeing and visualizing the future and our present is frustrating. Believing in what is called
reality and society based off decisions that weren t made by us, but by the past to protect the outcome
of what should happen later. People search for clues to help stabilize and move forward in life in
myths and many other sources. Myths are traditional stories that deal with a historical explanation of
some natural or social event, usually associating with supernatural appearances. The ancient Greeks
told their cosmos through teachings and tales concerning their gods and heroes, and the importance
of the culture and ritual practices to show their natural state. The myth of the Amazonsand the great

Amazon women did not marry due to the belief that being too kind to men may allow the chance
for men to take over their society. Once the men were used by the women for mating, they would
be killed. If a male was born in the group of Amazons, sometimes he would be able to live but only
for reproduction and pleasure. On the other hand, when a girl was born, they would be pampered
and treated as a proper respected woman. She was also raised as a fierce fighter. The Amazons
dressed themselves with leather clothing that only covered certain body parts. However on

means mother of the moon . Even though, the Amazons were know for being wild women, the myth
shows similarities between them and matriarchy, a society that is ruled and governed by women in
today s world. There are many mythological stories that relate and interact with one an another

considered to be one of the most famous tales dealing the Amazons. Hercules is perhaps, if not, the
most well known myths about being heroic. The ninth task in
Adaptation Of The Ballad Of Hua Mulan
An Epic Hero Mulan The Ballad of Hua Mulan has many different adaptations to consider; and
while none of them offer a clear time period, (anywhere from 386 618 AD), they all agree on the
main points of the story. News was sent throughout China of the coming war, and the army
required that all men of age be enlisted. Hua Mulan; Hua being her last name, knew that her father
was too old and frail to engage in any sort of combat, so she decided to disguise herself as a man
and enlist in his stead as his son. Every version claims that Mulan served in the military for twelve
years, and performed many acts of bravery before returning home, only to find that her father had
already passed on. There are a few differences between the varying... Show more content on

The Effect Of Natural Selection
i.Evolution refers to change over time due to natural selection as organisms adapt and diverge to
produce multiple descendant species (Huxley L., Walter M., 2005, p. 698). Two pillars which form
the basis of all current knowledge of evolution originate from the historical record of evolutionary
change, fossil record and the study of the process of evolutionary change, specifically the effect of
natural selection. Recent developments in science, including molecular and developmental biology,
have greatly contributed to the understanding of biological diversity and how evolution has changed
multiple species, particularly the humanspecies (Losos J., 2014, pp. 3). ii. The concept of natural
selection was partially introduced by naturalist Charles Darwin in 1859 when he proposed and
provided scientific evidence to describe evolution as the idea that all species have evolved over
time from common ancestors through the process of natural selection. To survive in a particular
environment, Darwin s theory proposes that natural selection is the mechanism where organisms
must possess attributes that increase their chance of survival in that environment (Chidrawi G.,
Robson M., Hollis S., 2010, pp 114). Therefore, there will be a tendency for these attributes to be
perpetuated and other less appropriate attributes to be lost from the population over successive
generations (Huxley L., Walter M., 2005, pp. 698, 704). iii. Fossils are the remains of dead plants

It s Time to Legalize Slots in the State of Maryland Essay
The issue of legalizing slots and/or legalized gambling in the State of Maryland is a complex one,
and one of great consequence to both the State s residents, and the future of the State itself.
Maryland Governor Robert Ehrlich s slots bill proposes that the State place a total of 15,500 slot
machines or video poker machines in six different locations, three of which would be chosen from
a pool of four Maryland racetracks. The racetracks that would be eligible to install slots or video
poker machines are Laurel Park racecourse in Laurel, Rosecroft Raceway in Prince George s county,
a track that would be built at a later date in Allegheny county, and the Preakness Stakeshost Pimlico
in Baltimore; In effect turning those racetracks into... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Naturally, tourists that are vacationing in or around a gambling community typically have a larger
than average amount of cash on hand with them, which in turn makes them profitable robbery
victims. If an out of town guest at the Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut were to be robbed at
gunpoint outside of the resort, would that crime be attributed to the fact that Connecticut had
legalizing gambling, or the tourism that said legalization resulted in?

Conversely, if an individual has squandered their vacation or gambling budget in the casino, are they
now viewed as potential criminal offenders? Again, it is nearly impossible to conclude whether or
not these types of robberies are due to the casino that is attracting the tourism, or the fact that the
community itself has now become a tourist attraction?

A study conducted by the University of Nevada Reno states that when comparing the before and
after crime rates utilizing the population at risk, the data reveals few consistent trends in crime . In
short, it cannot be proven that by merely constructing a casino or venue where any type of
gambling is legal that it would create these spikes in the crime rate that those who are opposed to
legalized gambling insist would occur as a result, and to believe anything otherwise would be a hasty
generalization.

Another benefit of legalizing slots in the State of Maryland would be the restoration of the State s
horse industry. Our tradition of horse racing in Maryland

Mesopotamia means in between the rivers and the Babylonians were in between of Euphrates and
Tigris rivers. The Babylonians took over the Fertile Crescent and transmitted their culture there. The
people had surplus of food that could be traded. Just as the Babylonians had a great geography and

Akkadian. There was plenty of farmers within the society to survive. While the Babylonians had
many society rights the Hittites did too. The Hittites had a great society ideas that lasted. The
Hittites also believed in women s rights and would occasionally help out and be the King once in
awhile. The Hittites also had an education as well as the Babylonians. Their education consisted of
cuneiform writing and examine religious text. While the Babylonians and Hittites had many things
in common the Sumerians had many differences. The Sumerians did not believe in women s rights,
they prohibited them to have an education. The Sumerians had a specific order of people to
maintain their society powerful which was: Pharaoh s, high priests, nobles, lower priests, merchants,
scholars, peasants, farmers, and slaves. There was no equality between the empire of the Sumerians.
Just like every country has their own set of rules to maintain power the Babylonians, Hittites, and

Gulliver s Travels by Jonathan Swift
Society vs. Individuality In the novel Gulliver s Travels by Jonathan Swift, the influence that
society has on Gulliver is very detectable in this book. Throughout the novel, Gulliver repeatedly,
finds himself in predicaments because societal norms and the role of government in our society.
Swift shows how the idea of who people are due to their position in society. Gulliver is an outsider
to the society of Lilliput, he tries to fit into their world but fails, not only because of his size but
because of their governmental treason. I believe, Swift wrote the story of Liliput to try and
illustrate to us the idea that society and government corrupts individuals. This is shown by the
relationships between Gulliver and self oriented individuals and society oriented individuals. Swift
demonstrates that the government has questionable motives, in the Acts of Conduct that Gulliver
has to learn it has in it the description of basically what the King can and cannot do. The first rule
they explain is ...the obedience to the king out of terror rather than out of respect . The King shows
the fear he instills in his subjects by the phrase, the Princes of the Earth shake their Knees (25). The
King also tries to rule the heavens and the Earth, whose Feet press down to the Center, and whose
Head strikes against the sun (25). Even though the king is within his rule, the reader will find the
King s methods harsh. Swift is implying that for men to have control over their government or
