Essay on President Obama’s speech at the University of...
On April 8, 2013, President Barack Obama spoke at the University of Hartford on behalf of those
who died in the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown Connecticut.
President Obama addressed the people of the state of Connecticut and on a federal level. The
broadcasting networks provided live coverage of President Obama s speech, and a national
audience listened as the president s addressing the issues and the next steps forward for the country.
The impact of this tragedy and previous massive shootings and Obama s explanation have been a
subject of a controversial debate. I plan on using the pentadic method to analyze President Obama s
speech regarding Sandy Hook and gun control. What we can learn about the method by... Show more

It is interesting to see and reveal the misconceptions of President Obama s motive to the speech for
more gun control and how politicians and individuals are stressing an emotional and safety concern.
Within this political environment, and with a charismatic and persuasive use of the pentads, the
rhetor s motive was to implement legislation regarding gun control. Barack Obama as the rhetor,
directed towards American people to pressure congress to pass new gun legislation in Connecticut,
where the massacre took place. After the December 16, 2012 shooting at Newtown Connecticut,
there has been a controversial debate among gun control. The National Rifle Association had
fiercely lobbied congress to oppose any gun regulations. In this artifact, Obama spoke on behalf of
the murders of twenty children and six adults killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School. During his
speech, President Obama was hoping to build support among lawmakers for several gun control
measures, such as universal background checks. The president has the parents support to lobby for
gun legislation. In addition, Obama s proposal to ban assault rifles and limiting high ammunition
guns; majority of Republicans oppose this proposal. The research method I have demonstrated in
this paper is called Pentadic Criticism derived from Kenneth Burke whom made
Improving Health, Education, And The Environment
The MDGs identify and quantify specific gains that could be made to improve the lives of the
world s poor people. Their aim is to reduce poverty while improving health, education, and the
environment. These goals were endorsed by 189 countries at the September 2000 UN Millennium
General Assembly in New York. They focus on significant, measurable improvements for the efforts
of the World BankGroup, governments, other international organizations, and other partners in the
developmentcommunity. The MDGs grew out of the agreements and resolutions that have resulted
from world conferences organized by the UN in the past 10 15 years. Each goal is to be achieved by
2015, with progress to be measured by comparison with 1990 levels. Although the... Show more

But providing assistance isn t limited to providing financial aid. Developing countries may also
benefit if trade barriers are lowered, hence allowing a freer exchange of goods and services.
Achieving the goals is an enormous challenge. Partnerships between the Bank Group, the UN
Development Group (UNDG), and other organizations, as well as between donors and developing
countries, are the only way to ensure coordinated and complementary efforts. The UNDG consists of
the many UN programs, funds, and agencies engaged in development assistance and related
activities. The Bank Group participates in the UNDG and supports its framework for greater
coherence and cooperation in UN development operations.
Strategic Framework
The Bank Group s strategic framework concentrates on the twin pillars of:
1.building an appropriate climate for investment, jobs, and sustainable growth so that economies will
grow,
2.Investing in and empowering poor people to participate in development.
In recent years, the executive directors have underscored the continued relevance of these priorities,
have reaffirmed the need for selectivity in the Bank Group s work, and have called for greater
collaboration with development partners. In order focus on those pillars, the executive directors
have standardized the operational policies, practices and procedures. Furthermore, they have
discussed the needs of meeting requests of low income, heavily indebted and fragile countries. They

The Controversy of Abuse in Scientology

There has never been a religion more controversial or widely debated as Scientology. In part, this
image has been supported over the decades through the indirect machinations of Scientologists
themselves; their desire to prevent media attention has seemingly garnered more scrutiny, and their
interest in seclusion only furthers the idea of cultic secrecy. These examples are heightened as
allegations by defectors and court scandals arise. Though Scientology is a relatively new religion,
due to an extensive public rumor mill, it has managed to cause more commotion than have many
other much older religions. One of the most fascinating controversies ... Show more content on

As stated earlier, the RPF has committed physical and strenuous harm against its members.
Furthermore, eye witness accounts have placed Scientologists as engaging in direct violence.
Chris and Christie Collbran recall times in which sea org members were repeatedly beaten...by
David Miscavige (Goodstein 1), as well as forced to have abortions and work with little sleep.
Chris Collbran also remembers an instance where an official hit a member. He later emulated this
behavior by violently pushing a 17 year old follower against the wall. Christie describes being
consumed by fear, going so far as to wait until the third trimester to tell Sea Org officials of her
pregnancy, just so she could leave the church without being excommunicated. In other cases,
women have often cited being forced to have an abortion, something Christie corroborates as she
states she had known women who were removed when they refused to have abortions (Goodstein
2). Jenna Miscavige Hill also cites repeated instances of abuse in the Sea Org, including physical
violence and pressure to get an abortion. In Sea Org, women are not allowed to have children and
are encouraged to get abortions, while also subjected to violent
The Rwandan Genocide Of 1994 Effect The Hutu And Tutsi
Plan of Investigation
This investigation will seek to answer the question How Did the Rwandan Genocide of 1994
Effect the Hutu and Tutsi? I chose this question because last year I read the book Left to Tell and I
wanted to know more about the two different types of groups, the Hutus and the Tutsis. This was
and still is an important topic because many died that day just for belonging to a specific group.
This topic shows how much our world has changed since 1994. In order to answer my historical
investigation question, I have structured my analysis section using the following method. First, I
will answer how the two groups are different? And how these differences began the Rwandan
Genocide? Next, I will talk about a survivor and her experience, then, the survival rate of Hutus and
Tutsis. There are two main sources this paper will cover, first, a website called the United Human
Rights Council, then, a book called Left to Tell.
Summary of Evidence
Tutsis, were taller, lighter skinned, and had narrower noses. While Hutus were shorter, darker
skinned, and had broad noses. They were almost the same but Tutsis had superiority. The Skull
measurements showing larger brain size, greater height, and lighter skin tones all reaffirmed the
Tutsis superiority over the Hutus (History). By late March 1994, Hutu Power leaders were
determined to murder Tutsis and Hutus who opposed President Habyarimana, in enormous amounts,
mainly to destroy the peace agreement. They were ready to
Magical Realism In Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Kids taken from mothers, people stripped of their cultures, and families separated. Latin American
people have gone through burdens unimaginable to other, more developed, countries around the
world. Latin America has a very distinct culture, but that culture was stripped from the people and
replaced with another culture. Latin Americas diverse culture shows in its use of magical realism
and their intriguing ways of telling history. Magical realism is used to represent the mistreated
figures and atrocious leaders in their literature. One of these writers is Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
Born in Aracataca, Colombia this latino writer used magical realism in his stories to represent the
conditions in Latin America. He uses characters in his stories to represent Latin America and how
the countries people are treated. Gabriel originally went to school to be a lawyer, but later gave
that up to be a journalist. His short stories and inspirational speeches were awarded the Nobel Prize
of Literature and the International Literature Award. Although Latin America was beaten down,
they still persevered. They gained their independence and started to become the great country they
once were. Like Gabriel said in his speech, The Solitude of Latin America, Nevertheless, in the face
of oppression, pillage, and abandonment, our reply is life. This tells us that Latin America, in the
face of defeat, rises and comes back twice as strong. The constant oppression of their people and the
suffering
British Naval Superiority
Throughout the nineteenth century, the British Royal Navy was a force that could not be matched.
Not only did the Navy connect the heart of the empire to its colonies, it also assured the
transportation of resources. In previous years, Britain s possession of coal had been the primary fuel
for global British domination. However, industrialization brought with it new and more efficient
innovations and technology. Embracing technology would lead to the continuation of British
domination, but to not adapt at a time when nations such as Germany and Italy were learning to flex
their military might, would be detrimental to British Naval supremacy. The oil industry has
historically cast a powerful hand in British policies. It was Lionel de Rothschild, the owner of an
influential banking and oil company that loaned the British government the capital for purchasing...

Because of the Britain s fear of growing dependence on foreign oil, the following class of
destroyers was built to burn coal. However, the ineffectiveness of this class clearly illustrated that
oil was superior to coal, and henceforth all other destroyers were built using oil. Furthermore, In
1912, the Queen Elizabeth class of super dreadnoughts became the first British battleship which
only used oil. Not only was this ship substantially faster than its predecessors, it was also more
efficient. Previous Dreadnoughts of comparable size required 260 men to work the engine, while
the Elizabeth class reduced this number to 110. The Queen Elizabeth became the flagship of the
fleet and on November 15, 1918, a German representative boarded the ship and accepted the terms
of surrender for the German High Fleet This event aboard the first British Oil powered Battleship
symbolizes the continuation of British Naval dominance as a result of
Women s Role In Ancient Rome
Role of Women in Ancient Rome Women in ancient Rome played a vital role in the transition of
political power in the roman government. Although the Roman women were not allowed to formally
hold office or vote, they often were influencing their men in regard to political decisions. These
women were typically working in the background and although they may not get the explicit mention
they deserve in historical texts, without their actions Rome may have had a very different outcome.
In Livy s The History of Rome, three instances involving women had a significant impact on the
development of the Roman government. In Livy s first book of The History of Rome, he narrates
the events that occur around Lucretia , daughter of Lucretius. Lucretia became
Weaknesses Of Social Contract Theory
Social Contract theory is the idea that in the beginning people lived in the state of nature with no
government and laws to regulate them. In order to overcome the issues involved in the state of
nature, people entered into agreements to protect themselves and their properties. They did this by
uniting, rescinding certain rights under the state of nature, and pledging themselves to an authority
that will guarantee certain protections. They all agree to live together under those laws and create a
mechanism that enforces the contract and the laws that come with it. Some political theorists, such
as Thomas Hobbesand John Locke, have differing views as to what the state of nature is and what
should constitute as a social contract. One... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
More precisely, children are just as likely to contract with their mothers as they are with their fathers
for protection. Additionally, given the lack of a modern family structure, it is unlikely that a child
would know the exact identification of their father. Carole Pateman points out that under these
conditions of nature, it would seem unlikely that women would agree to have children. According to
Hobbes, they have the same primary drive for survival and perpetual existence that men do. The
question then lies: why would women put themselves at greater risk by caring for children?
Carole Pateman prompts us that the worrying part of Hobbes s idea of family may not be its
contractual form but its absolutism. While in his political contract we give absolute rule to the
sovereign, such as a monarch, in the family contract we also turn power over to an absolute ruler.
This absolute ruler is the master of the family. While Hobbes leaves open the possibility that the
mother could be the master of the household, however, mothers and women are removed from the
discussion of the family once the idea of the master is introduced. Pateman also dismisses Hobbes s
acknowledgement of female sovereigns as simply a logical possibility. She goes even further: the
sovereign cannot be the mother, given the conjectural history of the origin of the family

Human Emotions In Faulkner s A Rose For Emily
Human emotions are a strange thing. We cannot choose which of them we have and which we
don t, but we can choose how we convey them. Faulkner chooses to convey his emotions in the
characters he writes. In A Rose for Emily , Emily takes on many human emotions that whirlwind
around the plot of the story. Faulkner displays love, sadness, and revenge as human emotion in A
Rose for Emily . The first human emotion that Faulkner displays in A Rose for Emily is love.
Emily falls in love with this man that is not the perfect choice. Homer Barron is a young man
who falls in love with many girls. He is not the marrying type as some would say. Faulkner said,
None of the young men were quite good enough for Miss Emily and such. Yet, Emily falls head
over heels in love for this man. That is all she can think about. She becomes completely absorbed in
his being and cannot focus on anything else. Until finally, the love floods her brain and she kills him.

Faulkner lets the reader know that Emily is sad by the way he writes the character. She prefers to
remain submerged in her own thoughts and actions. Faulkner first introduces sadness into this
story when Emily s father dies. She is overcome with grief and is not able to function or cope.
After her father s death, Emily left the house very seldomly. This changed a bit when she fell in
love. They were supposed to marry until he left her. Faulkner stated, After her father s death she
went out very little; after her sweetheart went away, people hardly saw her at all. This left her with
even more sadness than her father s
