World History Essay

Mini EssayDue: February 2, 2012 King Afonso I was king of Kongo during the 1520s. Qianlong was
emperor of China during the Qing dynasty, during the 1790s. In the kingdom of Kongo, there were
many Portuguese merchants whom had established close political and diplomatic relations with the
king. These relations brought much wealth and recognition to Kongo, but it also brought problems
that led to its inevitable destruction. Portuguese merchants embarked on slaving expeditions. Their
tactics undermined the authority of the kings, who appealed repeatedly to the Portuguese to cease or
at least to limit their trade in slaves. During the Qing dynasty, global trade brought much ... Show

He wants there to be limited trade in slaves. In the document by Qianlong, he talks about trade
between China and England. He says that the merchants should only trade at the trading post in
Guangzhou. He does not want the merchants to trade from any other port, and if they do so, then
these merchants shall forever be forbidden from trading there and will also be immediately thrown
out. Both of these authors are similar due to the fact that they are both monarchs and they are also
both writing this letter to the kings of countries in the west. Afonso I is king of Kongo, and
Qianlong is the emperor of China during the Qing dynasty. They are both addressing matters that
involve the west. Afonso I is writing his letter to the king of Portugal and Qianlong wrote this letter
to King George III of England. They also both provided goods that were essential to those they are
writing to. Afonso I of Kongo provided mainly slaves to those in Portugal, who were in much need of
them. Qianlong of China provided mainly tea, silk, and porcelain to those in England, who could not
go on without them. They also both wanted to put reforms on trade between their respective
countries and the ones they are writing to. Afonso wanted the Portuguese to limit the number of
slaves they took from the Kongo land. Qianlong wanted the English to only trade at Guangzhou, so
that the merchants could overlook on what was going on and make sure that the foreign
The Importance Of Defense Support Of Civil Governments
Introduction Governor Blanco failed to send a request for Defense Support of Civil Authorities
(DSCA) in a timely manner because she was unclear on how the process works and caused
activation delays to assist the city of New Orleans. Imagine a major hurricane has just passed
though the city you live in, leaving you stuck with no food, water, adequate shelter, and means of
communication. You are now stranded on the rooftop of what was once your house because it is
now flooded. In 2005, hurricane Katrinaheavily hit New Orleans, Louisianaand left the city and its
occupants in disarray. The storm left thousands of New Orleans residents stranded for days before

Request Process to Activate DSCA
The state governor submits request for DSCA in writing to the office of the Executive Secretary
of the Department of Defense (DoD). (Department of Defense Directive (DoDD) 3025.18, p. 3,
2010). After the request submission, it goes through a screening and evaluating process. We must
consider legality, potential lethal force either by or against the DoD, and measure how much risk
we are assuming with accepting the mission. Estimating the cost on what it will take to assist the
state in need and whether accepting the mission is appropriate to the DoD s interest to provide
support or if it will take away from the DoD s abilities to perform their mission are all factors in
the evaluating process. Upon request approval, the Secretary of Defense appoints a Federal
Coordination Officer (FCO) and establishes a Joint Field Office (JFO) to coordinate federal
disaster response and relief efforts. The JFO will work closely with the secretary of the State
Coordinating Officer. From there, DSCA activates and deploys within a matter of hours and remains
activated until the state is able to assist itself. It is important you understand key player roles in this.
Key Player Roles One of the responsibilities of the state governor is coordination of state resources
and providing strategic guidance to either prevent, prepare for, or respond to and recover from all
types of incidents (Joint Publications 3 28, 2003). The DoD is

Social Mobility
Social mobility still exist in the American economy and although it is harder to climb the ranks in
the social ladder it is not impossible. There are two different forms of social mobility that occur
in the economy such as Intergenerational mobility, upward social mobility in which you are
above the social ladder that your parents were from or downward social mobility where you end
up lower than what your parents were. Critics argue that in Americas ecomomy it has become
harder to be able to move up the social ladder when it is simply not true. For those who stride to
succeed in this economy still have the ability to move up the ladder. In a national research study

For those that are in minorities have a harder chance of being able to surpass their social class.
Although anyone has the ability to climb the social ladder it has become extremely dependent on the
circumstances that you have no control over such as what family or race you are born in. If you are
born african american or hispanic your chances to climb the social ladder are reduced.
Coincidentally, your chances are reduced further if your parents are unmarried or seperated which a
high percentage of hispanic and african american parents are. While the poor continue to be forced
to have increased chances of remaining poor the middle class has the ability to still enter the high

Power Corruptions And All Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely
Imagine that you have just became president. You simply lied to the audience to get to this point.
Once granted the position, you do nothing that you promised. Instead, you used your power to
destroy everything created. Welcome to Animal Farm. Animal Farm by George Orwell is about
a group of animals in England that have strived to take over the farm that was previously led by
humans. When the day was right, the animals had war and succeeded in getting the barn then
immediately starting their own democracy. Eventually throughout the years, the animals have
owned the farm they realize that by the end, corruption has been created and compared to when
the humans were ruling, everything was the exact same. Therefore showing that the theme is
power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely . The theme power corrupts and all
absolute power corrupts absolutely in the passage Animal Farm by George Orwell can be stated
in many parts of the passage. According to George Orwell, Twelve voices were shouting in anger,
and they were all alike. No question, now, what had happened to the faces of the pigs. The
creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but
already it was impossible to say which was which. In other words, George Orwell in the story is
stating how now (by the end of the book), there was no difference between man and pig. The pigs
eventually adapted to the ways man have ran the farm. Since there were no difference, and

How Boeing 787 Supply Chain Issues Affected Other Industries?
Debates between business professionals regarding risk and benefits of outsourcing is becoming
increasingly heated with particular focus on risks as unanticipated costs, potential for setbacks,
integration difficulties, quality or benefits as minimize overall cost, focus on other business area,
meet customer demand and flexibility. However, being prepared, done the research properly, hire the
right company can bring plenty of benefits to an organization looking to outsource different aspects
of their business. Rudzki, Smock, Katzorke, and Stewart (2005, pg.8) cover the significant
importance of outsourcing as part of supply chain management and acknowledge the enormous role
on raising customer satisfaction, driving higher profit margins, and fueling growth otherwise known
as increasing company profitability. To understand how the risks and benefits of outsourcing could
affect the company profitability, extended supply chain and how cost becomes value needs to be

supply chain supply where best suppliers were considered partners and shared the risks of this
product development.

Mart Financial Initiative Wal Mart, a fortune 500 company, has thousands of stores in many
countries around the world. Michael T. Duke, President and Chief Executive Officer of Wal Mart
Stores, Inc. expresses one financial priority of Wal Mart as growth. Growth: We will continue to
grow around the world. We have many opportunities to grow by opening new stores, entering new
markets, making acquisitions, integrating online channels, and developing new, innovative formats
to allow people to experience the Walmart brands (Wal Mart, 2010). Herein, Wal Mart s growth
initiative, three potential financial outcomes, including... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As demonstrated in Portland, Oregon, not every community desires a Wal Mart. In his CEO s
letter to the shareholders, Michael Duke referred to opportunities in metropolitan markets as a
major contributor to growth potential (Wal Mart, 2010). However, sales growth has declined
steadily since 2007. Wal Mart s 2010 annual report showed a 1% increase in sales growth over the
prior year. With the steady decline in sales growth, Wal Mart s initiative to continue growing
looks bleak; especially in hard economic times. Proof of the decline is seen in Wal Mart s 2011
first quarterly statement which posted a decline in same store sales in the United States of 1.4%
(Stock Blog Hub, 2010, para. 3). New growth is the key to the success of Wal Mart s growth
initiative. Without new markets, and with a steady decline in sales of existing stores, Wal Mart s
faces an inevitable decline leading to a failed growth initiative. Financial Outcome: Increase in
Sales Another potential outcome of the company s growth is initiative is that the sales will
increase. For the last five years Wal Mart has experienced a year over year growth in its net sales.
Sales increased 9%, 11%, 8%, 7% and 1% in the years 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 respectively
(Wal Mart, 2010). The company previously credited lower grocery prices during peak shopping
times like the Fourth of July holiday for the sales increase. Management increased promotions and
rollback prices on 16,000 items. In the fall the

Throughout the school year, they have a handful of nights where the parents can bring the student
and socialize and get to know others. Parents are always welcome to volunteer and help out during
the day in the classroom. While these are great ways to include parents in their child s education,
Joyce Epstein of Johns Hopkins University mentions 6 levels of involvement. The first level is
parenting, teachers should help establish a home environment that supports learning for the child.
Secondly, communicating from school to home and home to school. Some different ways to do this
are phone calls, newsletters, and emails. The next level is volunteering. Teachers should not only
promote but ask for family support in and out of the classroom. Learning at home is the fourth level
of parent involvement. Teachers should include information about what their child is learning and
how they can help with the child s reading and homework and what needs to be improved. Fifthly,
teachers should include parents in school decisions and create family organizations such as PTA.
Lastly, teachers should collaborate with the community and provide information about community
health, cultural, social support, and other programs or services. (Weissman and Hendrick 49 50). By
communicating about community cultural services, I believe that it shows that a teacher shows
interest in the familys culture. Establishing a good relationship
Essay On Macular Edema
The current study was conducted to investigate the changes in choroidal thickness within the
macular area in eyes with various types of diabetic macular edema, by comparing the measured
values with those of healthy normal subjects and of subjects with diabetic retinopathy without
diabetic macular edema and to correlate the sub foveal choroidal thickness measurements with the
central macular thickness. Patients and methods: A prospective, nonrandomized, observational study
was conducted to evaluate the central macular thickness (CMT) and the choroidal thickness (CH T)
in eyes with treatment naïve diabetic macular edema. One hundred forty two eyes of 96 subjects

1, 3, 6 mm Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) grid thickness map was
measured by the program incorporated in the Spectralis OCT software. Choroidal thickness
measurement: To obtain the choroidal image, Heidelberg Spectralis SD OCT EDI button in the
Spectralis software was used. The white on black image color was used for better contrast
between the choroid and the sclera. The choroidal thickness was measured manually, using the
caliper tool in the Heidelberg Spectralis OCT software, as perpendicular line, from the outer
portion of the hyperreflective line corresponding to the RPE to the choroidoscleral interface. The
choroidal thickness was measured from vertical and horizontal scans centered on the fovea. The
CH T measurements were obtained from the subfoveal and parafoveal areas at an interval of 500
μm up to 1500 μm from the center of the fovea (nasal, temporal, superior and inferior). All
measurements were performed at the same time of the day from 1PM 3PM for the diurnal variation
of the choroidal thickness.

Occupancy rate: hotel Sofitel is an international brand so the popularity of the hotel is increasing
day by day. As Sofitel hotel is licensed with planet 21 gold certificate. It uses eco friendly products
and balanced dishes. So now the occupancy rate of the hotel is increasing. It has increased to 86%
from 83% in last one year.
Average room rate: Room rate of Sofitel hotel depends upon the type of the rooms. But average
room rate starts from $285 NZD. But the prestige and junior suites will have higher rate than that. It
differs because different rooms provide different facilities.
Yield percentage: Yield percentage information cannot be gained by the hotel as it is an internal
information. But as I researched about the yield percentage of hotel Sofitel they mentioned that
normally it is depending on the seasons and how many customers are visiting to their hotel in certain
time period.
Seasonality: seasonality matters a lot in the hotel industry as the occupancy is influenced by the
different seasons. New Zealand has four seasons. Those are called summer, autumn, winter and
Spring which are totally different from each other.
Summer season (December February) This is the busiest season as there are many tourists who
want to enjoy their summer in New Zealand. There are some special offers in Sofitel hotel as there
are some main festivals such as Christmas day, Boxing

Norris, Andy Wright, Ozzie Powell, Olen Montgomery, Eugene Williams, Willie Roberson, and
Roy Wright are arrested and tried on charges of assault from fighting white boys on a train. Along
with accusations made by Victoria Price and Ruby Bates that the boys raped them. Their trial
begins April 6, 1931. All of the boys except for Roy Wright are tired and convicted, with the result
of the death sentence, Roy Wright s trial ends in a mistrial. Later the NAACP and International

she was raped. Also one of the witnesses to this rape was Orville Gilley who was one of the white

think he is a reliable witness.
The judges that were on the Scottsboro boys cases were William Callahan, and

From using, a different method to determine the speed at which the oil spill ran I also found that
the oil did not migrate linearly from the spill site in terms of distance as a function of time. I
concluded that there was a non linearity between day 19 and day 38. This non linearity could be
caused by the change in the current movement in the Gulf of Alaska. Part 3 Design and
Methodology: For finding how fast, the oil moves down the Gulf of Alaska I first found a quick
and imprecise rate of 8.39 miles/day by dividing 470 miles by 56 days. I knew this was not an
exact number, but it gave me somewhere to start. I then turn to excel to find a more precise rate. I
used the days as my y axis and the miles the oil migrated as my x axis. From creating a graph, I
was able to find from the regression equation that the oil moves at a rate of 7.69 miles/day. The
non linearity that I found in the data shows that the gap happens between day 19 and day 28. In
this gap, I found that the oil spill slowed down to about 1.58 miles/day. I calculated the regression
of the first gap from day 4 to day 19 and found that the oil spill moved at a rate of 13.09 miles/day.
Then I did the same for the upper half of the break and found that the oil spill runs 10.55 miles/day
from day 38 to day 56. Seeing these calculations proved to me the non linearity of the migration of
the oil. Part 4 Results and Findings: From my calculations, I found that the oil moved
