Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession
O Lord, our Sovereign, how majestic is your name in all the earth. Yet we
put aside your majesty, seeking our own power and gain. We set aside our
responsibility for the earth entrusted to our care. By both carelessness and
design, we pollute air, land, and waters. In our greed, we use more
resources than we rightly need. We confess that we do not fully
comprehend the damage we have done to the birds of the air, the creatures
of the sea, and the animals that live in forests and fields. Forgive us, we
pray. Let your majesty fill our senses, and pervade our actions, that we
may become better stewards of creations. Call us, in every infant’s cry, to
care for one another so that all your people flourish. In Christ’s name we
pray. Amen.
Silent Confession
Declaration of Forgiveness
One: Friends, we are still standing in the grace of Christ. Because God’s love
has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, we are set free
to love God and neighbor, and to work for the reconciliation of the world.
All: We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Thanks be
to God!

PROCLAIMING THE WORD
Prayer of Illumination
Reading from the Old Testament
Proverbs 22:17-29
Pay attention and turn your ear to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to
what I teach, 18 for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart and have all
4
of them ready on your lips. 19 So that your trust may be in the Lord, I teach you
today, even you. 20 Have I not written thirty sayings for you, sayings of counsel
and knowledge, 21 teaching you to be honest and to speak the truth, so that you
bring back truthful reports to those you serve? 22 Do not exploit the poor
because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court, 23 for the Lord will
take up their case and will exact life for life. 24 Do not make friends with a hot-
tempered person, do not associate with one easily angered, 25 or you may learn
their ways and get yourself ensnared. 26 Do not be one who shakes hands in
pledge or puts up security for debts; 27 if you lack the means to pay, your very
bed will be snatched from under you. 28 Do not move an ancient boundary stone
set up by your ancestors. 29 Do you see someone skilled in their work? They
will serve before kings; they will not serve before officials of low rank.

Reading from the New Testament
Romans 15:14-17
I myself am convinced, my brothers and sisters, that you yourselves are full of
goodness, filled with knowledge and competent to instruct one another. 15 Yet I
have written you quite boldly on some points to remind you of them again,
because of the grace God gave me 16 to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the
Gentiles. He gave me the priestly duty of proclaiming the gospel of God, so that
the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God, sanctified by the Holy
Spirit. 17 Therefore I glory in Christ Jesus in my service to God.

Holy, Holy
Holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty:
and we lift our hearts before you
as a token of our love, holy, holy, holy, holy.
5
Gracious Father, gracious Father,
we're so blest to be your children, gracious Father;
and we lift our hearts before you as a token of our love,
gracious Father, gracious Father.
Precious Jesus, precious Jesus,
we're so glad that you've redeemed us, precious Jesus;
and we lift our hearts before you as a token of our love,
precious Jesus, precious Jesus.
Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit,
come and fill our hearts anew, Holy Spirit;
and we lift our hearts before you as a token of our love,
Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit.
Hallelujah, hallelujah, Hallelujah, hallelujah;
and we lift our hearts before you as a token of our love,
hallelujah, hallelujah.
Reading from the Gospel
Matthew 6:25-34
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or
about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body
more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or
store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much
more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour
to your life? 28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of
the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon
in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes
the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire,
will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying,
‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For
the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you
need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these
things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow,
6
for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

RESPONDING TO THE WORD
*Affirmation of Faith The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in
Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead,
and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the
dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the
Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the
dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life
everlasting. Amen
*Hymn
Lord, You Give the Great Commission
Lord, you give the great commission:
“Heal the sick and preach the word.”
Lest the church neglect its mission,
and the gospel go unheard,
help us witness to your purpose
with renewed integrity:
with the Spirit’s gifts empower us
for the work of ministry.
7
Lord, you call us to your service:
“In my name baptize and teach.”
That the world may trust your promise,
life abundant meant for each,
give us all new fervor, draw us
closer in community:
with the Spirit’s gifts empower us
for the work of ministry.
Lord, you make the common holy:
“This, my body; this, my blood.”
Let us all, for earth’s true glory,
daily lift life heavenward,
asking that the world around us
share your children’s liberty:
with the Spirit’s gifts empower us
for the work of ministry.
Lord, you show us love’s true measure:
“Father, what they do, forgive.”
Yet we hoard as private treasure
all that you so freely give.
May your care and mercy lead us
to a just society:
with the Spirit’s gifts empower us
for the work of ministry.
Lord, you bless with words assuring:
“I am with you to the end.”
Faith and hope and love restoring,
may we serve as you intend,
8
and, amid the cares that claim us,
hold in mind eternity:
with the Spirit’s gifts empower us
for the work of ministry.

Prayer of Dedication
Prayers of the People
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily
bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not
into temptation but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the Kingdom, and the
power and the glory, forever. AMEN!
GOING OUT INTO THE WORLD
*Hymn
Savior, Like a Shepherd Lead Us
Savior, like a shepherd lead us;
much we need your tender care.
In your pleasant pastures feed us;
for our use your fold prepare.
9
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
you have bought us: we are yours.
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
you have bought us: we are yours.
We are yours: in love befriend us;
be the guardian of our way.
Keep your flock: from sin defend us;
seek us when we go astray.
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
hear your children when we pray.
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
hear your children when we pray.
You have promised to receive us,
poor and sinful though we be;
you have mercy to relieve us,
grace to cleanse, and power to free.
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
early let us turn to you.
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
early let us turn to you.
Early let us seek your favor;
early let us do your will.
Blessed Lord and only Savior,
with your love our spirits fill.
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
you have loved us; love us still.
Blessed Jesus, blessed Jesus,
you have loved us; love us still.
Benediction
