Mendelian Inheritance Project

The document discusses Mendelian inheritance, which describes how traits are passed from parents to offspring, based on the work of Gregor Mendel. It outlines Mendel's laws of inheritance, including the Law of Dominance, Law of Segregation, and Law of Independent Assortment, along with examples of monohybrid and dihybrid crosses. Additionally, it highlights the significance of Mendel's findings in modern genetics and their applications in predicting traits and studying genetic disorders.

1. Introduction to Mendelian Inheritance
Mendelian inheritance refers to the manner by which genes and traits are passed
from parents to offspring, first discovered by Gregor Mendel in the 19th century.

2. Who Was Gregor Mendel?

Gregor Johann Mendel, also known as the Father of Genetics, conducted
experiments on pea plants and discovered fundamental laws of inheritance.

3. Why Pea Plants?

Mendel chose pea plants because they grow quickly, have easily observable traits,
and can self-pollinate or be cross-pollinated.

4. Important Genetic Terms

Term Definition
Trait A specific characteristic like height or color.
Gene Unit of heredity controlling a trait.
Allele Different forms of a gene.
Dominant Trait that masks the other in a pair.
Recessive Trait that is masked by the dominant one.
Genotype Genetic makeup of an organism.
Phenotype Observable trait or appearance.
Homozygous Both alleles are the same (TT or tt).
Heterozygous Two different alleles (Tt).
5. Mendel’s Laws of Inheritance
• 1. Law of Dominance: One trait hides the other when two different traits are
present.

• 2. Law of Segregation: Each parent passes one allele to offspring.

• 3. Law of Independent Assortment: Traits are inherited independently.

6. Monohybrid Cross
• Example: Tall (T) vs Dwarf (t) plants.

• P Generation: TT × tt → F1: All Tt (Tall)

• F2 Generation: Tt × Tt → 3 Tall : 1 Dwarf

7. Dihybrid Cross
• Example: Round Yellow (RRYY) × Wrinkled Green (rryy)

• F1: All Round Yellow (RrYy)

• F2 Phenotypic Ratio: 9:3:3:1

8. Applications of Mendel’s Laws
• Used in predicting traits in offspring, improving crops, and studying genetic
disorders.
9. Conclusion
• Mendel’s work forms the basis of modern genetics. His laws explain how traits are
inherited across generations.
