MATLAB Installation Guide

Jiseok Chae
March 3, 2024

Step 1. Create a MathWorks Account

To use MATLAB one needs a MathWorks account. If you already have a MathWorks account,
then you can skip to Step 2. Otherwise, you should create one from https://www.mathworks.
com/mwaccount/register.
You must
must use your KAIST email address in order to use MATLAB with KAIST license.

Once you click the “Create” button, a verification email with a URL link will be sent to your
KAIST email. Click that URL link to verify your email address.

1
Step 2. Activate your License
After you have made your MathWorks account, go to the MathWorks website (https://www.
mathworks.com/) and sign in to your account.
Go to the “My Account” page (https://www.mathworks.com/mwaccount/). You should see
a license linked with your account, with the label “MATLAB(Individual)”.

If the license is not linked to your account

skip this
If the license is properly linked to your account, skip this part
part and go to Step 3.
If not, click the “Link an additional license” button.

Use the Activation Key 17925-02416-09128-40758-01531. You must not leak this activation
key to the outside of KAIST.

2
Step 3. Decide Whether to Install MATLAB or Not
To freely use MATLAB and fully explore its capabilities, it is usually better to have MATLAB
installed on your local device. However, in some circumstances you may rather wish to not
install MATLAB: maybe you are using someone else’s device, or you are simply annoyed about
MATLAB taking up a huge portion of the computing resource you have on your device.
In such cases, using the online version of MATLAB (https://matlab.mathworks.com/)
might be an alternative. However, throughout the semester, we will always assume that you are
using MATLAB that is installed on your local device. Any issue that happens because of using
the online version should be handled by yourself.
If you chose not to install MATLAB, then you are done for now. You do not have to proceed
to the next step.

Step 4. Download the MATLAB Installer

If you decided to install MATLAB, go back to your account webpage. Click the download button
(highlighted in red in the figure below) next to the label “MATLAB(Individual)”.

You will then see the webpage where you can download the MATLAB installer. The latest
MATLAB version as of today (March 3, 2024) is 2023b. Version 2024a prerelease is also currently
available. It is usually recommended to install the latest stable release (i.e., 2023b for now) and
then update to the new version (2024a) when it is officially released, but you may choose to
install 2024a prerelease right now if you want. Everything we are going to do throughout this
semester should be compatible with both versions 2023b and 2024a.

3
Step 5. Install MATLAB
i) Once you execute the downloaded installer, in case you are using a Windows computer, a
self-extractor will be launched, indicating that the installation process has been started. A
similar process will be executed if you are using a different operating system.

ii) Use your MathWorks account to sign in inside the Product Installer.

4
iii) Read the the terms of the license agreement, agree to it, and click “Next”.

iv) Choose the “MATLAB(Individual)” liscence and proceed.

5
v) Select where you want to install MATLAB. Do NOT change from the default directory,
unless you have a very good reason.

vi) Select the additional products. These are add-on features you can use. In this course we
will use the following additional products:
• MATLAB
• Image Processing Toolbox
• Symbolic Math Toolbox
You may select other additional products you find interesting, but you must select the
additional products listed above. If any of the above is missing, then you are going to have
some difficulties in following the MATLAB materials.

6
vii) For your convenience you may want to add a shortcut to your desktop. It is up to you to
decide whether to send user experience information to MathWorks or not.

viii) Confirm your installation. If you have selected all additional products listed above, it should
say at least 3 of 113 products in the part highlighted below in yellow. Click the “Begin
Install” button, and wait until the installation is complete.
