Mathematics II (MAL1020)
Assignment I
—————————————————————————————————–
Note: There are total 13 questions. Attempt any 10.

1. Show that the set {(x1 , x2 , x3 , x4 ) ∈ R4 : x3 = 5x4 + b} is a subspace of R4 if b = 0. Also

comment on the case when b ̸= 0.
2. If W1 and W2 are 2 dimensional subspaces of R3 , show that W1 ∪W2 is a subspace iff W1 = W2 .
3. (a). Give an example of a function ϕ : R2 → R such that ϕ(αv) = αϕ(v) for all α ∈ R and
for all v ∈ R2 but ϕ is not a linear transformation.
(b). Give an example of a function ϕ : C → C such that ϕ(w + z) = ϕ(w) + ϕ(z) for all
w, z ∈ C but ϕ is not a linear transformation.
4. Suppose U, W, V are finite dimensional vector spaces. Let S : V → W and T : U → V be
linear transformations. Prove that
(a) dim(Null(ST )) ≤ dim(Null(S)) + dim(Null(T ))
(b) dim(Range(ST )) ≤ min{dim(Range(S)), dim(Range(T ))}
5. Let V be a vector space over F. Let ϕ : V → F be a linear transformation and ϕ ̸= 0. Let
N (ϕ) be null space of ϕ, then show that
dim(V /N (ϕ)) = 1

6. Let n ∈ N and T : Fn → Fn be a linear transformation defined by

T (x1 , x2 , ..., xn ) = (x1 + x2 + ... + xn , ..., x1 + x2 + ... + xn )
Find all eigenvalues and eigenvectors of T .
7. Define T : R3 → R3 by T (x, y, z) = (5x + y, 2y, 3x + 8z). Find a basis of R3 with respect to
which T has a diagonal matrix.
8. On P3 (R), consider the inner product given by
Z 1
< p, q >= p(x)q(x)dx
0

Apply the Gram-Schmidt procedeure to the basis {1, x, x2 , x3 } to produce an orthonormal

basis of P3 (R).
9. Prove/Disprove
(a) < (x1 , x2 ), (y1 , y2 ) >= |x1 y1 | + |x2 y2 | for x1 , x2 , y1 , y2 ∈ R is an inner product on R2 .
(b) < (x1 , x2 , x3 ), (y1 , y2 , y3 ) >= x1 y1 + x3 y3 for (x1 , x2 , x3 ), (y1 , y2 , y3 ) ∈ R3 is an inner
product on R3 .

10. Let W1 and W2 denote the collection of all even functions and odd functions on [−1, 1] re-
spectively. Prove that W1 and W2 are subspaces of V = C[−1, 1]. Further, prove that
V = W1 + W2 . Is the sum direct? Justify your answer.
11. Prove that W = {(x, y, z) ∈ R3 : x = −y = 3z} is a subspace of V = R3 . For the given
V and W determine V /W . Also determine the basis and dimension of V /W . Also find the
representation of any general element of V /W in terms of the basis obtained.
12. Let T : R4 → R4 be a linear transformation represented by the matrix
1 1 0 0
 
 −1 −1 0 0 
−2 −2 2 1
1 1 −1 0

Find the characteristic polynomial of the given operator. Is T diagonalizable? Justify your
answer.
13. Prove that for an inner product space V , if {w1 , w2 , ..., wk } is an orthonormal set such that
||v||2 = ki=1 | < v, wi > |2 for all v ∈ V , then {w1 , w2 , ..., wk } is a basis for V .
