ASME Section VIII, Division 1 (ASME Sec VIII Div 1) does not provide a single, consolidated "weld

defect acceptance table." Instead, it references several types of inspections (visual,

radiographic, ultrasonic, etc.) and the applicable acceptance criteria, which are mainly found in
referenced standards such as ASME Section V (for NDE procedures) and ASME Section IX (for
weld qualifications).

For weld defect acceptance, here’s a general summary based on ASME Section VIII, Div 1 and
ASME Section V (Article 2) for radiographic testing:

Typical Acceptance Criteria for Weld Discontinuities (per ASME Sec VIII Div 1 + ASME V):

These criteria are referenced in Appendix 4 of ASME VIII Div 1 and align with Article 2 of ASME
Section V:

1. Cracks and Incomplete Fusion

• Not acceptable under any circumstances.

2. Incomplete Penetration

• Not acceptable.

3. Porosity

• Acceptable within limits:

o Isolated Pores: Acceptable if they are not excessive in size.

o Clustered Porosity: May be cause for rejection if dense or large.

o Acceptance based on density, distribution, and size.

4. Slag Inclusions

• Acceptable if:

o Length ≤ 1/8 in (3 mm) and

o Spacing between inclusions ≥ 3 in (75 mm).

5. Undercut

• Typically:

o Depth ≤ 1/32 in (0.8 mm) and

o Length within allowable limits based on material thickness.

6. Overlap or Excessive Reinforcement

• Maximum reinforcement usually:

o 1/8 in (3 mm) for plates up to 1/2 in thick.

o Proportional limits for thicker plates.

Reference Table:
You won’t find a labeled "weld defect acceptance table" directly, but Appendix 4 and UCS-57,
UW-51, and UW-52 (for RT) are critical.

If you’re looking for an actual table format (e.g., for RT film interpretation), it is common in
ASME Section V, Article 2, Mandatory Appendix I.
