VCM LIVE USER GUIDE

In order to modify a parameter supported by the ECU, the parameter must be

included in at least one subwindow of your layout. There are two subwindow types
which allow editing of tunable parameters:

■ Characteristic Lists are lists of tunable parameters, with the parameter name on
the left and the corresponding value on the right. Some parameters in these lists
allow you to enter a numerical value. Others, require you to select a specific value
from a dropdown. See Tuning Listed Characteristics (Page 34)
■ Table Editors are used to modify tunable tables. See Editing Tables (Page 36) for
more information.

Additionally, the following features can be used to modify parameter settings:

■ The Crank Cam Offset Wizard can be used to set the Crank Cam Offset
Parameter. See Crank Cam Offset Wizard (Page 50).
■ The Upgrade Tune feature allows you to import desired parameter values from a
saved tune file. See Comparing Tunes (Page 48) for more information.

NOTE: See the Core Parameter Guide for descriptions of individual parameters:
https://files.hptuners.com/help/CoreParameterGuide.pdf

TUNING LISTED CHARACTERISTICS

EDITING TABLES
Editing tables is one of the key tasks required when modifying a tune. A good under-
standing of the Table Editor's display, layout, and functions will make many tuning
tasks much easier.

BASIC LAYOUT

Initially, you will see data presented in a normal table view. This is the primary view for
editing table data and the majority of the editor's functions are available only in this
view.

You can also switch to either a 2D or a 3D graph view:

Switch to 3D graph view. In addition to zooming and rotating the chart,

this view allows you to drag click and drag individual data points. See
Using 3D Graph View (Page 42) for more information.

Selects the 2D graph view. This view allows you to click and drag
individual data points. See Using 2D Graph View (Page 43).

STANDALONE LOGGING CONFIGURATION

Standalone Logging lets you log data directly to internal storage of your of the
ECU without being tethered to a laptop. The data can then be retrieved when
VCM Live is once again connected to the ECU.

NOTE: Unlike the "Standalone Data Logging" feature in VCM Scanner, this feature
does not require an HP Tuners interface device. Instead, it uses functionality built
into the Core series of ECUs.

The process is as follows:

1. Select the measurements to be logged.

2. Define the triggers that will start and stop recording.

3. Write the configuration to the ECU.
4. Disconnect your laptop from the ECU and operate the vehicle in a manner which
will set off the triggers defined in step 2.

5. Reconnect to VCM Live and retrieve the recorded data.

SELECTING THE MEASUREMENTS TO BE LOGGED

1. In the menu bar, select ECU > Standalone Logging Config. The Standalone
Logging Config Window appears.

2. Check the Enable config box.

3. Use the Default Frequency box to specify how many times per second the
majority of measurements should be recorded.

NOTE: The higher the frequency, the faster the ECU's available memory will be
consumed by the recording. A good strategy is to choose a relatively low
default frequency. Then, choose higher frequencies for individual meas-
urements that require better resolution.

NOTE: You can quickly search for a particular measurement by typing its
name in the box above the list.

b. Click >> to move the selected measurement to the column on the right.

c. If you want to record this measurement at a higher or lower rate than you
specified as the default in step 3, use the Frequency dropdown next to the
measurement to change the rate.

NOTE: At any point in the process, you can save your work to file by clicking the
Save button. This feature also makes it possible to maintain multiple logging con-
figurations that can be quickly swapped out simply by loading the desired con-
figuration and writing it to the ECU.

TPS ABOVE (%)

The minimum reading of the throttle position sensor (%) required to begin recording.

VEHICLE SPEED (MPH)

The minimum vehicle speed required to begin recording.

OFF DELAY (S)

Recording will stop when one or more of the triggers fall below the values specified
above for at least this amount of time (in seconds).

MAX FILE SIZE (MB)

The maximum allowable size for each log file. When this limit is reached, the ECU will
open a new file and continue recording.

ROLL OVER
This box specifies what the ECU does when its memory is full.

■ If this box IS NOT checked, recording will stop.

VIRTUAL MEASUREMENTS

DEFINING VIRTUAL MEASUREMENTS

1. Click .

2. In the left column, select the new virtual measurement.

3. On the right side of the window, enter the Display Name for this measurement.
This is the name you will see displayed on screen.
4. In the Name box, enter the internal parameter name used by the software.

NOTE: This is typically just the Display Name with spaces and other special
characters removed. It can be used to include this calculation in other virtual
measurements.

5. Enter the Math Expression for this measurement. This is the formula that will be
used to calculate the new measurement. See Defining Expressions below.
6. Click OK.

DEFINING EXPRESSIONS
An expression is the mathematical formula that is used to calculate the virtual meas-
urement's value. The expression can include measurements, such as the output of
sensors or calculated outputs. These are inserted into the expression as variables.

The process for defining an expression is as follows:

1. Insert variables that represent the measurements that will be included in the
calculation.

NOTE: In the Math Expression box, the names of inserted variables will appear
in brackets.

2. Add supported math operations to complete the desired calculation.

HP Tuners, LLC
700 Eastwood Lane Page 95
Buffalo Grove, IL 60089, USA
VCM LIVE USER GUIDE

Note that there are two types of expression:

■ Calculated
■ Conditional

CALCULATED EXPRESSIONS
A calculated expression applies mathematical operations to the output of the sensors
or PIDs identified in the expression in order to provide a modified signal or a signal
that is derived from multiple inputs.

Examples:

■ [lambdaSetpoint] - [lambdaSensor1]

NOTE: Lambda bank 1 error

■ ([intakeAirTemperature.K] * ([primaryInjectorFlowRate.g/s] / 1000) *

[primaryPulseWidth.ms] * [lambdaSetpoint]) / [manifoldAbsolutePressure.kPa]

NOTE: Airmass per cylinder using IAT, primary injector flow rate, primary
injector pulse width, lambda setpoint, and MAP.

CONDITIONAL EXPRESSIONS
A conditional expression specifies a function that tests the output data stream of the
measurements identified in the expression and produces a TRUE or FALSE result for
each frame of the output.

Conditional expressions must return either 1 (TRUE) or 0 (FALSE).

Example:

■ [massAirflow.g/s] > 100

the output of a individual sensors and other measurements.

ADDING A VARIABLE
Follow these steps to add a variable:

1. Click the Parameter link. The Parameter Selector window appears.

2. Double-click on the PID or sensor that you wish to use for the variable.

use for this variable.

4. If you want to use a special function (modifier) for the variable, select the desired
function and then enter the associated Period in milliseconds.
5. Click OK.

NOTE: If you know, the internal name of the measurement you want to add, you
can type it directly into the Math Expression box as text.

SETTING THE CAN BUS BIT RATE

The Bitrate dropdown at the top of the top of the window is used to set the bitrate of
the CAN bus. All devices on the bus must use the same bitrate.

CAN BUS TERMINATION

A CAN bus must have exactly two termination resistors, one at each end. If you wish to
use the ECU as one of the endpoints:

1. Check the Enable CAN Termination box.

2. Ensure that there is one (and only one) other termination resistor on the bus.

If you already have two termination resistors on the CAN bus, uncheck the Enable
CAN Termination box. This allows the ECU to act as a node in the middle of the
network.

MEASUREMENT FORMAT
There are a number of settings that format each item in the Measurements list.

As you configure these settings, you can see the bit format you are configuring in the
lower left corner of the window.

The blue and orange bits represent the row you have selected in the measurement
list on the right side of the window.

If bits are red, it means there is some problem with the configuration. For example, if
you indicate that your first measurement takes up 11 bits, but your second
measurement starts on bit 8, the data would overlap.

START BIT
The bit of the message that this measurement starts on. For example, if the first
measurement in the message starts on bit 0 and is 8 bits wide, it will take up bits 0 to
7. So, the second measurement would likely start on bit 8.

CAN BUS CONFIGURATION

WIDTH
The number of bits used to encode the value of this measurement.

BYTE ORDER
Indicates whether the most significant bit is the first bit or the last bit of this
measurement.

■ Intel. The most significant bit is stored last (little endian). This is typically the case
with Intel processors.
■ Motorola. This most significant bit is stored first (big endian). This is typically the
case with Motorola processors.

TYPE
■ Signed. The value indicates whether it is positive or negative.
■ Unsigned. The value contains only positive numbers.

GAIN AND OFFSET

CAN messages use these values to optimize the way data is encoded.

When sending a message (output messages), the value actually encoded for the
measurement is equal to:

■ (Measurement - Offset) / Gain

When receiving messages (input messages), the value to be used is calculated by

applying the following formula to the received value:

■ (Received value * Gain) + Offset

MIN
The minimum allowed value for this parameter.
