SCIENCE INVESTIGATION HELP SHEET
MYP5 Criterion B
Title (Bi) - outline an appropriate problem or research question to be tested by a scientific investigation
● This should be self-explanatory title. By reading the title, the work being reported should be clear to the reader without having
to read the paper itself.
-
Aim (Bi))
● Write down what you are trying to find out by doing this experiment connected to the Statement of Inquiry for the uint.
-
Background Information (Bi))
● Complete some research here to explain the science behind what you are expecting to see
● Include information that allows you to justify the range of your variables
● Include information that is unique for your experiment
● “Set the scene” for your experiment
-
(Research Question) (Bi)
● Include details to explain what you are trying to understand about the above-mentioned aim.
How does the independent variable (levels of your IV) affect the dependent variable (specific units) (include duration, if
relevant)?
Hypothesis (Bii) - outline a testable prediction using scientific reasoning) – Complete after selecting variables.
● What you think (predict) is going to happen based on your understanding.
● Explain why you think this is going to happen.
● Make sure your reason is scientifically explained.
● Use sources such as books, magazines or the internet. (Remember to cite your sources.)
If independent variable changes from (explain the change), then dependent variable will change from (explain the result)
because…
Other sources that support this hypothesis are....
Here may be some helpful sentence frames for writing your research question and hypothesis
Variables (Biii) - outline how to manipulate the variables, and outline how data will be collected
● Explain how you will change the independent variable
● Choose a range for the independent variable
● Explain how you will measure or observe the dependent variable.
● Quantitative measurements will be measured using a tool and producing numbers.
Type of variable Name the variable Describe how it will be manipulated, measured
Independant - -
(Change)
Dependant - -
(Measure)
● Explain how you will control each variable to make it a fair test
● State the values for each of the controlled variables (volumes/mass/concentration)
● Explain how controlling the variables will affect the measurements.
This is not a report template to be submitted.
Type of Name the variable Describe how it will be held Describe the effect that a change will
variable constant have on the collected data
Control 1. - -
2.- - -
3.- - -
● Outline how sufficient, relevant data will be collected.
Data will be collected by ………
The calculations that will need to be done are ………
Sufficient, relevant data will be produced by……… (trials)
Now GO BACK and complete the Aim and Hypothesis using the identified variables.
Materials (Biv) - design a logical, complete and safe method in which he or she selects appropriate materials and
equipment.
● List all the chemicals and apparatus you are going to use in bullet points/list form.
● Include sizes and quantities eg. Four 250 ml beakers.
-
Procedure (Biv)
● Use proper vocabulary. Note, below is just an example.
1. Collect the equipment listed above.
2. Put on safety goggles.
3. Set up the apparatus as follows:
a.
b.
c.
d.
4. Record the data.
5. Conduct …… trials.
6. Do the experiment again, this time changing <independent variable> to ………
7. Repeat steps 3 – 6.
8. Put all the equipment away.
9. Results will be calculated by… and displayed as a graph showing...
Safety/Ethical/Environmental considerations (Biv)
● Explain the issues for the experiment.
There are some / no risks in this investigation because...
Safety precautions taken include …
You must mention any ethical and environmental safety concerns:
● If there aren’t any, you must explicitly state this
● For any that you do have, you must explain how you accounted for them in your method
