Chirp the Chunky Chick

CROCHET PATTERN BY
Welcome!
I hope you will enjoy the creation of this chunky chick! Please don't hesitate to contact me at
hello@theresascrochetshop.com with any questions that you may have along the way. Have fun!

Meet Chirp!
Chirp may only be a couple weeks old, but he has already learned quite a lot about life... That it’s
better to stay close to other chicks to keep warm. That corn and lettuce are absolutely delicious. And
that exploring with his friend Cheep is the best way to spend the day.

Notes
1. The eyes used in this pattern were purchased from aliexpress.com.

2. This pattern is crocheted in continuous rounds (you will not join each round).

3. In this pattern, I begin each circle with “the ch 2 method.” Another way of beginning is to start
with a magic circle. If you are more familiar with this method, do 8 sc (or whatever number is
specified) into your magic circle.

4. Single crochet decrease stitch explanation: Insert the hook into the next stitch and yarn over.
Pull a loop through so that there are now 2 loops on the hook. Insert the hook into the next
stitch and yarn over. Pull a loop through so that there are now 3 loops on the hook. Yarn over
again and pull the loop of yarn through all 3 loops on the hook.

Instructions
Head
With yellow yarn,
R1: Ch 2, 8 sc in first ch (8 sts)
R2: 2 sc in each st around (16 sts)
R3: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st) 8 times (24 sts)
R4: (Sc 3, 2 sc in next st) 6 times (30 sts)
R5: (Sc 4, 2 sc in next st) 6 times (36 sts)
R6-11: Sc 36 (36 sts x 6 total rounds)
R12: (Sc 4, dec 1) 6 times (30 sts)
R13: (Sc 3, dec 1) 6 times (24 sts)
R14: (Sc 2, dec 1) 6 times (18 sts)
R15: (Sc 1, dec 1) 6 times (12 sts)

Fasten off, leaving just a short yarn tail for tucking inside the
head. Begin stuffing the head. Insert the 20mm eyes between
R10-R11 of the head, with 5 sts in between (Figure 1). After
Figure 1: Eye Position
double checking that the eyes are 5 sts apart, firmly press the
backs onto the eyes. If you are using the 3D safety eyes with
cup-shaped washers, either use a safety eye jig to attach the
eyes OR you can soak the washers in boiling-hot water for 2
minutes and then they will snap on without a tool.

Finish stuffing the head.

Beak & Eyebrows

Thread a strand of orange yarn onto your yarn needle, insert
it through the opening at the bottom of the head and out Figure 2: Face & Body
between the eyes between R11-12. Sew 3 horizontal stitches
between the eyes to create the beak (Figure 2). Then weave
the orange yarn back through to the inside of the head and
secure with a knot to the beginning tail.

Next, thread a strand of black embroidery floss onto your

yarn needle, insert it through the opening at the bottom of
the head, and out 1 round above the eyes. Sew a slanted
stitch above each eye to create the eyebrows (Figure 3). Then
weave the floss through to the inside of the head and secure
with a knot to the beginning tail. Figure 3: Face - Angle View

Body
With yellow yarn,
R1: Ch 2, 8 sc in first ch (8 sts)
R2: 2 sc in each st around (16 sts)
R3: (Sc 7, 2 sc in next st) 2 times (18 sts)
R4: (Sc 5, 2 sc in next st) 3 times (21 sts)
R5-8: Sc 21 (21 sts x 4 total rounds)
R9: (Sc 5, dec 1) 3 times (18 sts)
R10: (Sc 1, dec 1) 6 times (12 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing. Stuff the body. Sew
the body to the head.

Wings (x2)
With yellow yarn,
R1: Ch 2, 8 sc in first ch (8 sts) A C
R2: (Sc 1, 2 sc in next st) 4 times (12 sts)

Wait to fasten off. Your wing will look as shown in Figure 4-A.
Now fold this circle in half, and with your crochet hook, single
crochet the 2 ends of the circle together (Figure 4-B) to form a B
semi-circle – 6 single crochet sts down the side of the wing
(Figure 4-C). Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing.

Sew the wings to the sides of the body right below the head. Figure 4: Wings

Feet
Thread a long strand of orange yarn onto your yarn needle.
Insert it anywhere in the body (leaving a beginning tail
hanging out for securing in a moment). Then sew 4 stitches
between R2-3 to create a little foot (Figure 5). Make sure you
like how the foot looks from the front, and then repeat 2
stitches over to create the other foot. Now weave the orange
yarn through the inside of the body and out right where the
beginning tail is. Tie the 2 ends in a knot, thread them onto
your yarn needle, and pull them inside the body.

Tuft
Cut 3 short strands of medium-weight acrylic yellow yarn that
matches the super bulky weight yellow yarn. Pull the 3
strands through a stitch right at the beginning circle of the
head to form a loop. Pull the ends through the loop to form a
knot. Pull tight and trim the ends to your desired length.

And there you go, your chick is finished! Enjoy!
