1ST YEAR. DIAGNOSTIC LESSONS.

Thursday 6th – Let’s Connect! Cities, People & Fun

Objectives: Encourage students to introduce themselves in a fun and engaging way,


foster teamwork and collaboration through interactive activities, introduce students to
London and Oxford while developing research skills, assess students’ ability to
communicate personal information and gather information in English.

Materials: Board and markers, music and a shaker, printed puzzle images (London,
Oxford, famous people), question cards for the research activity, students’ mobile
phones (for the GIF exit ticket)

Lesson 1: Getting to Know Each Other & City Exploration

1. Warm-up Activity – Musical Introductions:


• We will write some personal questions on the board along with a special category.​
• Meanwhile, we will play music while students pass around a shaker. When the music
stops, the student holding the shaker will have to introduce themselves.

2. Main Activities – Puzzle Your Way to a Team!


• Activity 1: We will show important images from London and Oxford, as well as
famous people from each place. These images will be presented as puzzles.​
• Students will have to find their matching pieces to complete the puzzles, which will
ultimately divide the class into groups.

• Activity 2 – Discover Your City:


• Once in groups, students will receive questions related to their assigned cities.​
• They will need to research and find the answers.
3. Exit Ticket – Express Yourself with a GIF!
• Each student will search for a GIF on their phone that represents how they felt about
today’s class.​
• They will briefly explain their choice.

Friday 7th – A Day in the Life: Simple Present in Action!

Objectives: Review and assess students’ prior knowledge of the verb to be and the
simple present tense, develop writing and speaking skills through personal and creative
tasks, reinforce grammar awareness by identifying and correcting mistakes, encourage
students to express their daily routines in English.

Materials: Board and markers, printed memes with grammatical mistakes, paper or
notebooks for writing activities, image cards with different emojis for the exit ticket.

Lesson 2: Simple Present Review

1. Warm-up Activity – What Do You Remember?


• We will start with a brainstorming session, asking students what they remember about
the verb to be.​
• We will then ask guiding questions about the simple present to assess their memory
and understanding.

2. Main Activities – Bringing Routines to Life!

• Activity 1 – My Favorite Celebrity’s Daily Life:


• Students will choose their favorite famous person and write a short paragraph
describing their daily routine.​
• After writing, they will share their routines orally.

• Activity 2 – Grammar Detective: Fix the Meme!


• Each student will receive a meme with grammatical mistakes.​
• Their task will be to find and correct the errors before sharing them with the class.
• Activity 3 – My Routine vs. My Idol’s Routine:
• Students will write about their own daily routines.​
• Then, they will compare their routine with the one they wrote about their chosen
famous person.​
• Finally, they will share the differences orally with the class.

3. Exit Ticket – Emoji Sentences!


• Students will see images containing different emojis.​
• They will write or say a sentence using the emojis provided.
