SENTENCES- SIMPLE, COMPOUND&COMPLEX

Sentences are categorized according to the number and types of clauses they contain. The names of the four
types of sentences are simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex.

 Simple Sentence: A simple sentence has the most basic elements that make it a sentence: a subject, a
verb, and a completed thought.
Examples:
 The plane flew over the stadium.
 Joe waited for the train.

A simple sentence can also be referred to as an independent clause. It is referred to as "independent" because,
while it might be part of a compound or complex sentence, it can also be a complete sentence.

 Compound Sentence: A compound sentence refers to a sentence made up of two independent clauses
(or complete sentences) connected with a coordinating conjunction.

An independent clause is a part of a sentence that can stand alone because it contains a subject and a verb and
expresses a complete thought.

A compound sentence contains two simple sentences. Coordinating conjunctions are easy to remember if you
think of the words "FANBOYS": For, And, Nor, But, Or, So, Yet.

Examples:
 I haven't seen that movie yet; we should go see it together this weekend.
 I love my dog, and he is my best friend.

 Complex Sentence: A complex sentence contains one independent clause and one or more dependent
clauses (dependent clauses usually begin with a subordinate conjunction such as after, although, as,
because, before, if, since, though, unless, until, when, whenever, where, wherever, while)
Examples:
 I love going outside when the weather is warm.
 Though he is talented, he often underestimates his abilities.

On a warm summer afternoon, the park was bustling with activity. Families gathered for picnics, and
children played games on the grassy fields. The sun was shining brightly, casting long shadows across
the playground equipment. Birds chirped cheerfully from the trees, and a gentle breeze carried the
scent of blooming flowers. Although it was quite hot, the cool shade provided by the large oak trees
offered a welcome respite. Many people sought refuge under the leafy canopy, enjoying the refreshing
lemonade and iced tea they had brought with them. A group of friends decided to play a game of
soccer, their laughter echoing through the park as they chased the ball. When they grew tired, they lay
on the soft grass, watching the clouds drift lazily across the sky. As the sun began to set, the sky
turned into a canvas of vibrant colors, painting a breathtaking view. It was a perfect day, filled with
joy and relaxation, creating memories that would last a lifetime.
As the evening approached, families started packing up their picnics and gathering their belongings.
Some children reluctantly left the playground, while others promised to return the next day. The park
slowly began to quiet down, and the sounds of nature became more pronounced. Crickets started their
nighttime symphony, and fireflies began to dance in the dusky light. As the last rays of sunlight faded,
the sky became a canvas of twinkling stars, bringing a peaceful end to a beautiful day.
