Tennis
Tennis is a game, in which two opposing
players (singles) or pairs of players (doubles)
use tautly strung rackets to hit a ball of
specified size, weight, and bounce over a net
on a rectangular court.
At first tennis was played on grass and now
it is played on a variety of surfaces.
Nowadays many famous people have tennis courts in the yards of their huge houses.
Until 1972, tennis balls were white (sometimes black). In 1972, the International
Tennis Federation introduced yellow balls , because they were easier to see on
television and they became popular quickly.
History: Most historians believe that tennis originated
in the monastic cloisters in northern France in the
12th century, but the ball was then struck with the
palm of the hand called " game of the palm".
Many people are sure, that Major Walter Wingfield
created this popular sport game. It was he who
published the first rules of lawn tennis in 1873,
although at that time they were different from the
modern ones, were more like rules of the popular
badminton. In 1875, a new set of rules was developed.
And later the first tennis tournament
was held in England and there was the
first winner Spencer Gore.
Famous players : the first player of tennis in public was Susan
Lenglen. She was a winner of many court games and could change the
idea of clothing appropriate
for female tennis players.
Pete Sampras - the first
American tennis player, who
won three consecutive Wimbledon gold
medals.
Rafael Nadal: has many victories: The gold
medal at the Beijing Olympics, victories at Roland
Garros, the Davis Cup, and the Masters
tournament cups. The only winner of the Red
Slam.
Serena Williams - She has 21
victories in GrandSlam under
her belt.
Rules of game : A tennis match is divided into segments: games
and sets. To win a set, a tennis player must win at least six
games with a difference of at least two: 6-0, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 and 6-4.
If the score in a game reaches 5-5, the opponents play at least
two more games - thus, each has a chance to finish the set with a score of 7-5.
When the score is 6-6, the referee calls a tie-break. This is a shortened game in which
tennis players receive one point for each rally won.
Popularity: many people think, that there are three reasons, why tennis became such
popular game in all over the world. Tennis is a very aesthetic and restrained sport.
There is no violence in it, as for example, in box. The player needs endurance, high
concentration and stamina.
My opinion: Tennis is great for developing discipline in a child and also helps improve
the performance of all muscles. In tennis, the load is evenly distributed, developing
agility, speed and power of impact. For many women tennis is a great way to lose
weight without going to the gym, because going to the gym is boring, and on the field
there is a game and the desire to win, a lot of energy is expended. This game can be
a first sport for little children, because children can start playing teniss from 4-5
years old. Tennis is suitable for both indoor and outdoor play. In addition, tennis
helps develop logic and thinking. It also makes you think strategically and calculate
combinations in the game.
